Spider-Trinity: Reborn Into Marvel Universe
Chapter 158: Baby Wheels Protocol"Vital signs stable. Neural responses normal. Everything seems stable," Cortana said while looking at the computer where her boyfriend and Logan were connected.
For a few brief seconds, she closed her eyes, and when she opened them again, she began viewing a recording from one of the Spider-Bots.
It showed several men carrying strange weapons and wearing black-and-white masks.
A small group of ten men had gathered at the docks, and after analyzing their movements, weapons, and behavior, she quickly concluded that something highly illegal was taking place.
She considered waking Peter, but ultimately decided that this might be the perfect opportunity to put her own abilities into practice.
She went to the room where Peter kept the suits and searched for the one he had been working on at her request.
The suit had a different color scheme as well as a completely different design.
Originally, she had planned to modify another suit she had previously obtained, but Peter had refused and instead placed it inside one of the tribute display cases he maintained.
To this day, she still did not understand why such a thing existed, but who was she to complain?
Putting on the suit, she felt as though the part that had been missing since the day Peter created her body and she first began using it was finally complete.
Leaving the room, she approached one of the walls, which opened to reveal a capsule.
Entering it, she began traveling toward one of the safe zones Peter had previously marked.
The capsule, like several others hidden throughout different locations, had been installed because construction of the Spider-Mobile was not yet complete, and swinging directly from the house remained a problem.
The journey lasted only three minutes. The capsule arrived at a secluded location unknown to most people, and upon exiting, she began jumping across the rooftops.
Using parkour along with her adhesive abilities, she climbed to the top of a building. Standing near the edge, she sighed before firing a web at another building. Looking down, she swallowed nervously before finally jumping.
"AHHHHHHH!"
She screamed as she realized she was about to crash directly into a wall.
Acting on instinct, she raised her free arm, fired another web, and released the first one.
Little by little, she began swinging with slightly greater control. More than once, she nearly crashed into a wall or plummeted toward the street, but somehow she managed to save herself each time, making her release one trembling sigh after another.
Internally, she was cursing her boyfriend’s name because he had told her that swinging was something completely natural, while to her there was absolutely nothing natural about it.
According to Peter, the first time he swung through the city, it had felt like an extension of his own body, with almost no difficulty whatsoever.
On some occasions, he had needed to make a few calculations, but nothing complicated enough to seriously hinder him.
Every time Cortana had watched him swing, she had been amazed by the maneuvers he performed and the way he ran across walls as though they were solid ground beneath his feet.
According to what her boyfriend had told her, her powers had not fully matured yet, meaning she could not do everything he could. For a brief moment, she considered testing whether she could run along a wall.
She immediately abandoned the idea.
"Activating Baby Wheels Protocol."
"What?"
Cortana looked around in confusion, and because of that momentary distraction, she nearly crashed directly into another wall. Before impact, however, the suit intervened and corrected her trajectory.
As she continued swinging, the lenses began marking specific points across the buildings she passed.
Suddenly, her hand moved toward one of those points, firing a web automatically and making her swinging considerably easier to control.
Using her connection to the suit, she began reviewing its systems and was surprised to discover that it contained numerous protocols specifically designed to help her.
The red dots appearing across the buildings represented optimal locations for firing webs.
Never in her short life had she felt more embarrassed.
There were protocols for determining where to strike an opponent, estimating the appropriate amount of force to use, identifying optimal web-anchor points, and selecting which type of webbing should be used in different situations.
There were hundreds of other protocols as well. She even found one labeled Interrogation Mode and another called Kill-Bill Mode.
"Hello, Cortana."
A recording of Peter appeared in the corner of her lenses.
"I have to assume you are currently using the suit I designed for you, and you are doing so without my authorization. This could be for many reasons, but I will wait for you to explain once you return. If you do not tell me, I will know anyway."
Cortana narrowed her eyes.
"For now, I also have to assume you are using it without actually knowing how to be Spider-Woman. If that is not the case, I apologize. The suit contains several protocols designed to help you during your first mission, unauthorized adventure, or act of rebellion. Use your technopathic abilities to learn about them, and do not attempt to modify anything. If you do, the suit will enter safety mode and disable most of its functions, which would be particularly unfortunate if it happened while you were swinging."
Upon hearing this, every plan Cortana had for improvising went straight down the drain. She might have been a super-advanced intelligence, but Peter always found some way to make her feel like just another clever person.
"You already have some experience from watching me use the suit’s gadgets. There is also an assistance mode that will activate if you request it. Do not worry, it is not an AI. I know how humiliating it would be for someone like you to need that kind of help."
Even through the recording, she could see Peter’s mocking smile, making her scoff. With the suit’s assistance, she eventually landed safely on top of a building, allowing her to listen to the rest of the message without risking another collision.
"Anyway, I do not intend to waste any more of your time. If you need help, use your powers through the suit and do not change anything. I am warning you. Anyway, happy hunting."
The recording disappeared.
Cortana remained silent for several seconds.
"I still do not understand how he manages to know what people will do before they actually do it. I seriously underestimated his paranoia. I did not think the suit would have protocols like these, and somehow the man knew that sooner or later I would use it without his authorization." She sighed and looked down at the city below. "I would not be surprised if Yuri’s suit had something similar."
She remained there for another moment before straightening herself.
"Well, there is no time to waste. I have to get to that shipment."
Cortana jumped from the building and, with the assistance of the suit, began swinging toward the location.
