Chapter 616: Chapter 542: Falling from a Building
"Next!"
Chen Yu called out the door.
Soon, a middle-aged man with a friendly smile walked in, accompanied by a tall girl.
The girl was exceptionally tall, ducking her head as she entered. Visually, she seemed to be nearly two meters tall.
"Hello, Dr. Chen."
The middle-aged man stepped forward with a smile, introducing himself in Chinese.
He was Chen Zhonghe, the head coach of the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team.
And the tall girl following him was the team’s star player, Zhao Ruirui.
After entering, neither Chen Zhonghe nor she sat down, both standing a bit reservedly.
Chen Yu keenly noticed that when she stood, her body tilted slightly to the left, with all her weight resting on her left leg.
’Her right leg must be the problem.’
"Hello, please have a seat." Chen Yu gestured for Zhao Ruirui to sit first. Just as he was getting up to prepare, a middle-aged man burst through the door.
"Dr. Chen, we need your help! It’s an emergency, a real emergency!"
The man shouted frantically.
Chen Yu had a faint impression of this man. He seemed to be an official from the Hellenic Olympic Committee, someone he had seen once before when meeting with the committee’s president.
But seeing his panicked expression and hearing the word "emergency," Chen Yu didn’t dare to delay. He immediately stood up and asked what was going on.
"One of our athletes fell from a building. She has extensive fractures all over her body. The car is waiting outside. Would you be able to come?" he explained urgently.
’A fall from a building?’
Chen Yu was startled. ’What happened? Why would someone jump from a building?’
"I can."
Chen Yu asked no more questions and immediately followed the man outside.
At the door, Chen Yu paused to explain to Chen Zhonghe, asking them to leave their phone number and go back for now. He would have them come back after he had dealt with the current situation.
Although Chen Zhonghe didn’t understand what had happened, he could guess from their reactions that it was no small matter. He nodded quickly, signaling for Chen Yu to tend to his business.
Without another word, Chen Yu got in the car and headed straight for the hospital.
A little over twenty minutes later, Chen Yu arrived at a local Red Cross hospital.
The incident had occurred at a nearby apartment building.
Along the way, Chen Yu had learned the specifics of the situation.
The injured athlete was Elleni Youano, a judoka in the women’s 78 kg division.
In Greece, she was a rising star in the sports world. She had started practicing judo at 16, won the national judo championship three times, and was set to represent the Greek delegation at the Olympics this year.
Most importantly, she was only 20 years old!
Then, just this morning, at her boyfriend’s home, she had gotten into an argument with him and, in a fit of rage, leaped from the third-floor balcony.
"Are you sure it wasn’t murder?"
Chen Yu asked probingly on the way.
The reason for the fight was simple. Her boyfriend, Krisostomides, was also a judoka but had failed to qualify for this year’s Olympics.
Whether out of jealousy or some other reason, Krisostomides didn’t want his girlfriend to move into the Olympic Village and demanded that she live with him instead.
And because of such a trivial matter, Youano chose to take her own life.
’Something about this feels wrong.’
The official who had notified Chen Yu shook his head slightly, only saying that Krisostomides had been taken in by the police for questioning, but there was currently no evidence to suggest it was murder.
Chen Yu sighed and didn’t press further.
It was clear that Youano was a judo prodigy. Yet, less than a week before the Olympic opening ceremony, she had suffered such a tragedy. With extensive fractures all over her body, even if she could be healed, her athletic career was likely over.
In the trauma bay, Chen Yu saw Youano.
On the monitor, her blood pressure was continuously dropping.
Clearly, she was bleeding internally.
She was unconscious. By the time Chen Yu arrived, the hospital had already run the necessary emergency scans.
Although it was only a fall from the third floor, she had leaped from the balcony and slammed onto the ground sideways.
Upon impact, the back right side of her head hit the ground hard, resulting in a comminuted skull fracture with intracranial bleeding.
She also had a fractured clavicle, a fractured right arm and leg, fractured ribs, a fractured pelvis, and a cracked spine.
And that wasn’t all. Her internal organs had suffered from the impact, with some rupturing and bleeding.
In short, it was a gruesome scene; muscle contusions and the like were barely worth mentioning.
The fractures weren’t the biggest problem. The most troublesome issue was the intracranial bleeding.
"It’s very tricky. It’s near the brainstem area," said her attending physician, Entuscos, who was also the hospital’s chief of emergency medicine. He spoke cautiously.
The neurosurgery expert who had been called in for a consultation was also silent.
With an injury like this, even if they managed to stop the bleeding, the damage to the brainstem meant it was a huge question whether she would ever wake up.
"Let’s operate."
Chen Yu didn’t waste any words.
Her blood pressure was still dropping. Without surgery, she would certainly die.
"We’ll do the brain surgery at the same time. I’ll be the lead surgeon," Chen Yu added.
It was obvious that this hospital’s head of neurosurgery didn’t have much confidence in performing the operation.
’So what now? I have to do it myself.’
As for why an orthopedic surgeon like Chen Yu was qualified to perform brain surgery, one could just go ask Adriano whose father he had saved.
"Alright."
Entuscos let out a visible sigh of relief.
The pressure on him right now was immense.
Media reporters had already heard the news and gathered outside the hospital.
In Greece, Youano was a household name, a rising star in sports. If she died in the hospital, there would be serious trouble.
The hospital he worked at wasn’t the best in Athens; she had been brought here simply because it was the closest.
When she was admitted, Entuscos felt her injuries were too severe and had recommended transferring her to a better hospital.
But her condition was too critical; it was clear there was no time for a transfer.
Fortunately, Chen Yu happened to be in Athens.
This was a world-class, authoritative expert. If even Chen Yu couldn’t save her, then no one could blame the hospital.
Entuscos was the one who went to speak with the family.
There wasn’t much to discuss. Without surgery, she would die for sure. With surgery, there was at least a glimmer of hope.
As for whether she would ultimately regain consciousness, not even Chen Yu could make any guarantees.
In the operating room, Entuscos personally assisted Chen Yu.
He stated directly that Chen Yu was in charge. Whatever Chen Yu wanted to do, he would cooperate fully.
Chen Yu nodded slightly and began to debride the open wound on her head.
Under the Eye of All-Seeing, Chen Yu’s movements were very delicate.
Beneath the scalp lay a dense network of blood vessels and nerves. He preserved as many as he could to reduce the chance of post-operative headaches.
Of course, while his movements were precise, he still had to maintain his speed.
She was continuously bleeding; they were racing against the clock.
Clearing bone fragments, separating the periosteum, and peeling back tissue to expose the brain—Chen Yu couldn’t be bothered with hiding his abilities. His instrument punctured with precision, reaching the bleeding area directly to aspirate the hematoma and then achieve hemostasis.
The entire sequence was performed in one smooth motion, both fast and accurate.
But throughout the operating room, everyone was so terrified they didn’t dare breathe.
This was the most difficult part of the entire surgery.
Whether Youano would live or die depended on this very moment.
"Done."
In an instant, Chen Yu withdrew his hands and said to Entuscos, "You can close."
Entuscos jolted, let out an "Oh," and hurried over.
Staring at the exposed white matter of the brain, he was a bit dazed.
’That’s it? It’s over?’
’The key is, how did Chen Yu pinpoint the bleeding so accurately?’
He turned his head to look at Chen Yu.
Chen Yu had already moved to the abdomen, taken a scalpel from the nurse, and was preparing to perform a laparotomy.
He hesitated for a moment, then tentatively asked if they should do a bedside CT scan to see if the intracranial bleeding had stopped.
"Not necessary."
Chen Yu didn’t explain further. His hands never stopped as he deftly opened the abdomen, dissecting layer by layer until he reached the ruptured spleen.
Aspiration, suturing.
The rupture wasn’t too severe. If it had been, causing massive hemorrhaging, she probably wouldn’t have even made it to the operating room.
After quickly finishing the sutures, Chen Yu stopped.
On the other side, Entuscos had also finished closing.
Chen Yu looked at the monitor.
Youano’s continuously dropping blood pressure slowly stabilized and, with the blood transfusion, began to rise for the first time.
Entuscos’s eyes widened.
’He actually stopped the bleeding.’
In the operating room, the nurses and the anesthesiologist looked at each other and began to applaud.
’So this is what a world-class, authoritative expert looks like.’ They had truly witnessed it today.
"Don’t celebrate too early."
Chen Yu waved his hand at the crowd.
The intracranial bleeding was stopped, but such a severe impact was no less than taking a sledgehammer to the head.
Under the Eye of All-Seeing, Chen Yu didn’t see any other obvious organic damage.
But some damage isn’t so obvious.
So, what would ultimately happen to Youano, whether she would wake up, or whether she would end up in a vegetative state—no one knew.
’I hope she’ll be okay.’
Chen Yu glanced at Youano.
For the neurosurgery, Chen Yu had used a Gold Level Surgical Effect. ’Hopefully, it will work.’
"Alright."
Chen Yu shook out his hands and stretched his neck.
The difficult problem was solved. Next up was the physical labor, the equivalent of swinging a sledgehammer.
Realigning the vertebrae, fixing the fractured lamina... and while closing the abdomen, Chen Yu even took the opportunity to remove a few pounds of belly fat for her.
’That stuff is hard to lose. Since her abdomen was already open, it was just a matter of convenience.’
’Anyway, even if she does wake up from this injury, her athletic career is basically over.’
’And for a girl, it’s better to be a little thinner.’
「By the time he returned to the Olympic Village, it was already evening.」
His assistant physician had bought food for Chen Yu. Seeing him return, the assistant immediately went to heat it up and bring it over.
Chen Yu’s mood was somewhat heavy.
After the surgery, while still at the hospital, Chen Yu had learned more about the situation.
By speaking with her family and her coach, Chen Yu was able to basically confirm that Youano suffered from depression.
So this fall really wasn’t a premeditated murder by her boyfriend; it was due to her own psychological problems.
In that instant, the argument acted as a fuse, allowing the demon deep in her heart to take over, leading to this tragedy.
The key thing was, she was only 20!
For her to choose such an extreme path, it was clear her psychological issues hadn’t just appeared overnight, but had reached a very serious stage.
But when Chen Yu questioned her coach, the coach had no idea she had depression. He just said he thought she had become quieter over the past two years, even thinking she had matured and grown up.
’The ignorance is terrifying.’
Then he thought about Phelps, only 19, who was already showing symptoms of depression. Without intervention, who knew if he might follow in Youano’s footsteps in the future.
As he was eating, Chen Yu suddenly remembered something else.
Chen Zhonghe and Zhao Ruirui, who hadn’t been treated that morning because he had to leave unexpectedly.
He didn’t know what was wrong with Zhao Ruirui, but it didn’t look like a minor problem, seeing as it even affected her posture.
’With the Olympics just around the corner, it would be best to resolve it as soon as possible.’
Chen Yu immediately had his assistant physician contact Chen Zhonghe and ask them to come over while there was still time.
About ten minutes later, they arrived.
Only this time, three people came; there was another equally tall girl.
"Dr. Chen, thank you for taking the trouble," Chen Zhonghe said, thanking him profusely. He couldn’t imagine a doctor abroad contacting him at this hour.
"It’s no problem."
Chen Yu waved his hand and used the Eye of All-Seeing to look at Zhao Ruirui’s right leg.
The moment he saw it, Chen Yu’s brows furrowed.
