His heart pounded faster as countless thoughts flashed through his mind. Was he feeling fear, excitement, curiosity, or all three at once? Alex didn’t know, and he didn’t waste time trying to figure it out.

He took one slow breath before directing highly compressed, unstable mana toward his brain, pushing Battle Instinct far beyond its normal output.

His emotions immediately calmed, distracting thoughts faded into the background, and everything around him became dull.

Only the charging Wild Orc remained perfectly clear in his vision.

Alex turned on his heel and sprinted away. Fighting beside Jaelo Supermart would only endanger the people trapped inside if another spear descended from the sky. The empty streets Stefan’s group had cleared were where Alex intended to kill the Wild Orc, and that was exactly where he led it.

Mana surged through Alex’s body as his muscles contracted and expanded like tightly wound steel cables. Every stride carried him dozens of meters, sending the scenery rushing past in a blur. He deliberately held back a little because he wanted to gauge the Wild Orc’s speed before committing to a full sprint.

If he accelerated to his maximum speed immediately, the inertia would make it much harder to stop or change direction if the monster suddenly attacked. He needed to know the Wild Orc’s limits first so he could judge exactly how fast he could move without losing the ability to react.

A massive shadow suddenly swallowed him as the Wild Orc closed the distance far faster than expected. Its footsteps came so rapidly that the tremors merged into one continuous vibration beneath Alex’s feet. The monster had already caught up.

Alex immediately spun on his heel. Mana Threads shot from the soles of his shoes and anchored themselves into the road, allowing him to stop almost instantly. Since he hadn’t been running at full speed, the sudden change in momentum only strained his legs slightly.

A gigantic hand descended from above. Each of the three claws was larger than Alex himself, and their sheer size stirred an instinctive fear that would have frozen most people in place. Battle Instinct suppressed that fear before it could interfere with his movements.

The Wild Orc wasn’t even trying to kill him yet. It simply wanted to grab him, like a person reaching for an interesting insect. Alex responded by creating a Mana Short Sword instead of a dagger for the extra reach.

Lightning Reflex operated at full power as Alex slipped between two enormous fingers just before they closed. The Mana Short Sword flashed once, slicing through two of the monster’s fingers before dark green blood burst from the wounds. Alex didn’t pause to admire the result and immediately launched himself upward.

Advanced Body Reinforcement pushed his legs beyond their normal limits. His muscles exploded with power, carrying him through the air until he landed on the Wild Orc’s forearm. The giant tensed and roared in pain.

Alex immediately started running toward the monster’s elbow. The incline was so steep that he had to create dozens of tiny needles from hardened Mana Thread beneath his shoes, allowing them to grip the Wild Orc’s skin instead of slipping. Even while sprinting, he never took his attention off the monster’s movements.

Battle Instinct suddenly screamed danger.

Alex’s head snapped sideways just in time to see the Wild Orc’s other hand sweeping toward him. The gigantic palm was moving fast enough to crush him against the monster’s own arm, and if it connected, there would be nothing left of him.

Alex reacted immediately. He lowered his body and explosively kicked off the monster’s forearm, launching himself toward the wall of a nearby building just before the Wild Orc’s palm slammed into its own elbow. The collision sent powerful shockwaves through the street, drawing another furious roar from the giant.

Even while escaping, Alex didn’t waste the opening. His Mana Short Sword carved across one of the monster’s fingers as he passed, slicing nearly halfway through it before he flew clear. The injury only made the Wild Orc even angrier.

A moment later, Alex crashed into the side of a nearby building. The impact made his bones creak, but he immediately drove the Mana Short Sword into the concrete wall to stop himself from falling. He also stopped vibrating the blade’s edge because leaving it active would simply cut through the wall instead of supporting his weight.

The Wild Orc roared again, and its Origin Energy suddenly became far more violent. The invisible pressure spread through the surrounding streets, trying to force its way into Alex’s body. Alex immediately increased his Mana output, circulating it beneath his skin until it pushed the invading Origin Energy back out.

The monster’s bloodshot eyes locked onto him. Without slowing down, it launched another gigantic palm toward the building with terrifying speed. There was barely enough time for Alex to react.

Lightning Reflex took control before conscious thought could catch up. Alex released the sword with one hand while the fingers of his other hand dug directly into the concrete. Reinforced by Advanced Body Reinforcement, his arm hurled him sideways so quickly that it almost looked as though he had flown.

The Wild Orc’s palm smashed into the building a heartbeat later. Concrete exploded in every direction as several walls collapsed under the impact alone. Although Alex escaped the direct hit, the shockwave still caught him and hurled him violently through the air.

He crashed hard onto the road. A sharp crack came from the back of his head, followed by another from his shoulder as he rolled across the concrete before jumping back onto his feet. Pain spread throughout his body, but Battle Instinct quickly pushed it into the background.

Alex didn’t waste a second. The Wild Orc was still roaring in pain and frustration after losing several fingers to Alex, giving him a brief opening. More importantly, the monster’s attention was now completely fixed on him.

He immediately turned and sprinted away. The damaged building happened to be empty, but frightened voices echoed from neighboring houses and nearby shops. This wasn’t the battlefield Alex wanted because too many civilians were still close enough to get caught in the fighting.

This time, Alex stopped holding back. Advanced Body Reinforcement and Lightning Reflex both operated at full power as lightning-element Mana surged through his neurons, making every signal travel faster.

His body responded instantly, allowing him to weave through abandoned cars and shattered pavement like a blur.
