SSS Awakening: I am the First Legendary Mage
Chapter 197: [Would you like to begin Class Evolution?]It seemed that the same spell could be reached through different evolutionary paths. That was useful information, because it meant Alex did not necessarily have to follow one specific route to develop his spells.
Elastic Trap Spell was more surprising. Alex had never deliberately used mana to create traps, so he did not understand why this evolution had appeared, although he had one possible explanation.
The ring of condensed mana he used for Mana Sense could be viewed as a mana thread looped into itself. Moreover, he had used it several times as a taunt, which could technically be considered a trap, so perhaps that was why this option had appeared.
Alex thought about it for a while but could not determine exactly what had caused the evolution to appear. Regardless, the spell itself seemed extremely useful because of its elastic properties.
Alex could already create mana objects and harden them with Will. The thicker those objects became, the amount of Will needed to maintain them and the difficulty to use it increased exponentially, and at his current level, he could not harden anything more substantial than a mana cable.
That was not the main problem, however.
Once Alex hardened an object with Will, the mana lost its natural flexibility, and other properties. He could create a hard physical object, but he could not make it remain elastic while also maintaining its physical form, or soft to absorb impacts. If he just left Elastic Thread as if without Will in the trap, the ordinary mana would quickly dissolve into the air.
Since this spell was specifically called Elastic Trap Spell, it meant that he could apparently maintain elastic mana in a physical state. More importantly, the spell would teach him how to use Will without destroying the elasticity of the mana.
The final option was Mana Bow Spell. It was a simple but powerful choice because Alex’s huge mana pool would allow him to continuously create arrows and fire them without worrying about ammunition.
He could even create specialized arrows, such as fire arrows or lightning arrows. After considering all three spells, Alex did what he usually did when choosing between multiple options.
He eliminated them one by one.
The first spell to go was Mana Muscle Spell. It was certainly useful, but until Alex could confirm that mana could actually strengthen his mana muscles, choosing it would be a major gamble.
If mana muscles could not be enhanced, he would be stuck with an evolution that offered much less value than he expected, and even weakened him. Alex would rather choose something he already understood than gamble on an uncertain improvement.
The second spell he eliminated was Mana Bow Spell. He already had Fire Bullet Spell and Mana Railgun for long-range attacks, while Mana Sword gave him a strong close-range option.
Even if he eventually decided that he needed a bow, Alex could probably create one himself. There was no reason to use a valuable Spell evolution for something he could reproduce with his existing abilities.
That left only one choice.
[Elastic Trap Spell learned.]
[Elastic Trap Spell, D Rank, Level 1.]
[Get your ass moving. How long are you going to sit? I’m getting bored.]
[Effect: Allows you to create a trap that, when stepped on, will close to catch the target.]
Alex ignored the stupid description, which had nothing to do with the spell, and focused on the effect information of his new spell. He closed his eyes as the knowledge entered his mind, sorting through it carefully before opening them again with a faint smile.
His guess had been correct. The spell allowed elastic mana to maintain its properties while teaching him how to use Will to keep that mana maintain its shake for longer. However, there were two things he had not expected.
The first was that the spell only gave him information about elastic mana. For other types, such as pure hardened mana or shock-absorbing mana, he would have to figure things out himself or wait for another evolution.
The second was that the spell was difficult. Alex opened his hand and began creating the trap. He first created several mana threads and wove them together into mana cables, then added elastic threads between them and created hardened mana surfaces around the structure.
The finished trap looked like a small section of floor surrounded by thin mana cables. The cables were connected beneath the surface, forming a web that would tighten around anything that stepped into the center, while the hardened mana provided enough structure to keep everything in position.
Creating the basic trap was easy. The difficult part came when Alex tried to use his Will to harden its shape.
It felt like trying to lift sand while forcing it to remain in the shape of bricks. Alex understood what he needed to do, but the mana simply refused to maintain the form he wanted without losing its elasticity.
He tried again, and again. After several attempts, Alex finally exhaled and lowered his hand. The spell was difficult, and at the moment, it was probably the hardest spell he had ever tried to use because understanding how it worked did not mean he could immediately control it.
Still, a faint smile appeared on Alex’s face. The difficulty did not discourage him. If anything, it made him more interested in mastering the spell. It wouldn’t be fun if Alex could use every spell easily. The harder a spell was to use, the more it forced him to understand about mana and Will, and the more he learned, the stronger he would become.
While practicing the Elastic Trap Spell, Alex ’looked’ at the Lightning Mana Rune stitched into his Mana Heart. Although he had hardened it with Will before, the process had not been perfect, so the rune had slowly begun dissolving instead of remaining permanently attached to his Mana Heart.
Because it had not been properly hardened, the rune was not stitched into his Mana Heart. Alex released some of its compression and carefully pulled it out, allowing the Lightning Mana Rune to float above his palm.
He poured his Will into it again, this time making sure that the entire rune was properly stabilized. The mana hardened under his Will, transforming into a true mana circuit that no longer showed signs of dissolving.
Several System notifications appeared in front of him.
[Mana Circuit Spell detected.]
[Would you like to learn Mana Circuit Spell?]
[Yes/No.]
’Yes.’
[Mana Circuit Spell learned.]
[Mana Circuit Spell learned.]
[Where there is a wire, there is a way.]
[Effect: Allows you to create mana circuits.]
Alex tried creating a new rune, and this time the process was much easier. Instead of creating mana threads, turning them into mana cables, and then shaping those cables into a rune, the System assisted him to perform the entire process at once.
All he needed to do was understand the essence of the mana circuit.
Alex took back control from System and practiced the Spell by himself. After a while, he released the rune and allowed it to dissolve before waiting for his Class Evolution to begin. As expected, the System soon responded.
[All Class Evolution requirements have been completed.]
[Additional Class Evolution requirements have been completed.]
[Would you like to begin Class Evolution?]
[Yes/No.]
’Yes.’
