SSS Awakening: I am the First Legendary Mage

As he walked, Alex carefully experimented with the spell. He tried redirecting the enhancement away from whatever part of his brain processed smell, though he had no real understanding of neuroscience and could only rely on trial and error.

Progress was painfully slow, but every failed attempt taught him a little more about how the spell functioned.

After several minutes, he stopped experimenting. The method seemed viable, which was all he needed to confirm for now.

Reinforcing the brain incorrectly was dangerous enough in a safe environment, and trying to train while monsters could appear at any moment crossed the line between taking risks and acting recklessly.

Alex enjoyed learning new spells, even if they came with danger, but there was a clear difference between taking risks and acting stupid. Trying to train the Battle Instinct Spell right now was simply stupidity. He stepped out of the apartment. The street looked even worse from outside.

Burned and crashed cars were scattered across the road, while broken walls and piles of rubble covered both sides of the street.

Alex took a slow breath as he looked around, taking in the destruction before focusing on the sounds around him.

People were still hiding inside the nearby buildings. Some cried quietly, some argued in panicked voices, and others tried so hard to remain silent that he could barely hear them breathing through the walls. The city felt strangely alive despite looking abandoned.

Alex looked down the road.

Three buffalo-like monsters stood there, slowly wandering through the wreckage. He observed them for several seconds, confirming their strength. He could kill them, but simply killing them wasn’t enough.

He wanted to improve himself through the battle.

His put his backpack down, and sword disappeared into his inventory. If he used it, he would have the advantage of reach, and there was no reason to rely on that against monsters he could already defeat. Instead, he walked over to a piece of steel rebar sticking out of broken concrete and pulled it free.

He carried the rebar toward a traffic light and struck it three times.

Clang.

Clang.

Clang.

The loud metallic sound echoed across the street. Alex immediately heard people inside apartments and nearby shops sucking in sharp breaths, and several curtains shifted as frightened faces peeked outside to see who was making such reckless noise.

His eyes briefly met those of a little girl staring through a window before he calmly looked back toward the road.

The monsters had already noticed him.

All three lowered their heads and charged at high speed. The one in front smashed a car aside as though it weighed nothing, never slowing despite the collision.

Their heavy footsteps cracked the concrete beneath them as they rushed straight toward Alex.

He tightened his grip on his wand and reinforced his brain to its limit. His thoughts immediately became sharper, allowing him to control mana with greater precision.

Without worrying about conserving mana anymore, he began creating two Fire Bullets.

He compressed the fire-element mana again and again, forcing both spells into dense, unstable forms. Under normal circumstances, stabilizing them would take several minutes, but the first monster would reach him long before then.

Yet, Alex had no intention of firing them.

The Fire Bullets floated beside him because they forced him to split his attention. More than half of his focus remained on keeping the unstable spells from collapsing while the rest focused on the battle ahead. If his concentration slipped for even an instant, the Fire Bullets would explode. At best they would leave him badly burned, and at worst they would kill him.

This was the handicap he had placed upon himself.

A small smile appeared on his face without him realizing it. His blood began to boil as the familiar feeling returned once more. The rush of battle, the excitement of feeling himself improving, and the anticipation of becoming stronger the battle ended all mixed together.

The first buffalo monster reached him.

Alex activated Advanced Body Reinforcement Spell at maximum output. He planted his feet, pulled back his fist, and punched straight into the monster’s head.

A loud boom echoed through the street as its skull caved inward, and Alex stepped aside before the corpse’s momentum carried it into him.

His hand throbbed from the impact. The monster’s head had been much tougher than he expected, but the result made sense. If these creatures fought by charging through anything in front of them, they would naturally evolve thick skulls.

The second monster arrived only moments later. Alex waited until the last possible second before stepping aside and driving his reinforced fist into the side of its head.

Its neck snapped with a loud crack, and the massive body continued forward for several more meters before collapsing onto the road.

The third monster reached him almost immediately afterward.

Under normal circumstances, dodging it would have been easy. But more than half of his attention remained occupied with stabilizing the two dangerous Fire Bullets beside him, delaying his reaction just enough to force a different response.

He grabbed both horns a split second before the impact.

The collision pushed him backward before the monster roared and drove forward with even greater force. Its hooves crushed the concrete beneath them as it tried to overpower him and drive one horn into his chest.

Alex answered by pushing Advanced Body Reinforcement Spell even further, allowing him to shockingly match a monster in raw strength, if only for a brief moment.

Then he roared.

Pain shot through his arms as every muscle strained to its limit. Crunching sounds came from his body as he forced the monster upward by its horns despite its violent struggles.

Refusing to loosen his grip, he lifted the creature completely off the ground before throwing himself backward.

The monster slammed into the concrete with a deafening crash. Alex’s own head struck the pavement at the same time, sending pain through the back of his skull. Unlike his fight against the leader of the Titan Reef Crab, he didn’t let the pain interrupt his Battle Instinct Spell this time.
