If it worked, his control over Mana Thread Spell would improve far more than repeatedly using the spell the same way, and he might even gain a level.
Alex stored both his sword and wand inside his Inventory before reinforcing his entire body with a full powered Advanced Body Reinforcement Spell.
Then he stepped directly into the charging monster’s path and grabbed both of its horns. The impact nearly threw him backward, and the Doom Bull forced him to slide across the cracked concrete.
He had expected that much. During his previous fight, he had planted his feet firmly before stopping the monster’s charge, but this time he intentionally avoided doing so, and stood straight.
The difference in weight between them was simply too large for brute strength alone to overcome.
Then, he tested his idea.
Countless tiny Mana Threads emerged from the soles of his shoes and spread into the concrete beneath him.
They were much shorter and thinner than the ones he normally created, and maintaining so many of them demanded tremendous concentration.
Alex wasn’t vibrating them to cut anything this time, so that saved him a lot of concentration. He only needed them to hold. He was trying to imitate spiders and geckos, whose countless microscopic hairs allowed them to cling to surfaces.
Instead of tiny hairs, Alex used hardened Mana Threads to anchor himself to the ground.
Even if the monster outweighed him many times over, those anchors would keep him from being pushed back.
A small grin slowly spread across his face as the Doom Bull suddenly stopped gaining ground.
The Mana Threads snapped apart every moment under the monster’s strength, but Alex continuously created new ones to replace them.
At the same time, he poured more concentrated mana into his brain to sharpen his focus enough to maintain the spell.
The Doom Bull bellowed angrily and pushed even harder.
Alex’s feet remained firmly planted, but the force traveling through his body made it feel as though his waist might bend backward. He immediately reinforced his waist and back with more mana before the strain could overwhelm him.
Veins bulged across his forehead as he maintained the spell, yet the smile never left his face. This was exactly the kind of challenge he had been looking for. It forced him to use Mana Thread in a completely different way.
Thankfully, everyone else stood behind him, so none of them could see the expression on his face or they would’ve wondered whether his mental state was fine.
"Throw the stones now!" Alex called out.
His friends quickly spread around him and threw the pieces of rubble they had collected.
The stones struck the Doom Bull from different directions, including one thrown by Rae.
Alex was relieved the elderly woman hadn’t fired her rifle, because a stray bullet while he was grappling the monster could have been dangerous.
If she did that, he would’ve made her leave the group.
After everyone’s stone hit the Doom Bull, he believed that amount of participation should be enough for the System to recognize their contribution. If they gained "progress" after the Doom Bull died, they would be able to awaken directly instead of relying on Gene Potentials to awaken.
He could’ve just used the Gene Potentials, but joining a battle like this would help them become accustomed to fighting.
Alex didn’t mind helping them now because soon they would be protecting his first body while he entered the Land of Origin, and companions he had personally trained would always be more dependable than strangers.
Once everyone had thrown their stones, Alex prepared to finish the fight. While still holding the Doom Bull in place, he created a broad slab of mana directly above its neck.
He compressed it until it became paper-thin, sharpened one edge, and then made that edge vibrate rapidly like with Mana Thread.
The spell remained stable as it was within his sixteen-inch casting range. Alex released the mana slab, allowing gravity to pull it downward.
The vibrating edge sliced through the monster’s neck like a knife through butter, and the Doom Bull collapsed lifelessly onto the broken street.
A series of notifications immediately appeared before Alex’s eyes, one after another, almost filling his vision. Even though he had been expecting them, seeing so many at once still made his heart race with excitement.
[Level 10 Doom Bull killed.]
[Level 9 Doom Bull killed.]
[Level 9 Doom Bull killed.]
[Level 8 Doom Bull killed.]
[Advanced Body Reinforcement Spell has leveled up. Level 4 → Level 5.]
[Mana Thread Spell has leveled up. Level 9 → Level 10.]
[Mana Thread Spell has reached Max Level.]
[Mana Thread Spell can now be evolved. Choose an evolution...]
Alex wanted to check the evolution immediately, but he forced himself to look away from the notifications first.
The others had participated in the fight, and he wanted to know whether his guess had been correct.
"So?" Alex asked.
"We all got a notification saying we have to choose a Class before we receive the progress from contributing to that fight. It looks like the System was counting what we did," Robert answered almost immediately, unable to hide the excitement in his voice.
"That’s good. We’ll take a short break. Everyone should think carefully before choosing a Class because changing it later might not be possible. Once you’re all done, we’ll continue moving," Alex said.
The group entered a restaurant beside the road through its shattered entrance. Instead of remaining near the front, they settled beside the staircase where there were no corpses nearby, making the area less likely to attract monsters.
It also gave them a clear path to escape, whether danger came from outside or deeper inside the building.
Alex took an Energy Bar from his Inventory and bit off a small piece before putting the rest away.
Warmth spread through his body almost immediately, easing the fatigue from the recent fights. Only after recovering some stamina did he bring up the remaining notification.
[Mana Thread Spell can now be evolved. Choose an evolution: Advanced Mana Thread Spell, Sho....]
