Moon walked up the corridor and reached the main chamber of the floating island base.

The moment he stepped through the entrance, his subordinates recognized him immediately.

"The Base Lord is here!"

The voice came from somewhere near the eastern wall. Heads turned across the chamber. Conversations paused mid-word.

Several Evolvers who had been carrying equipment across the floor set their loads down and straightened up.

Most of the faces Moon saw were unfamiliar to him. New recruits who had joined the base during his absence, or people he had liberated during the pavilion clearing but hadn’t spent significant time with since. Their expressions showed surprise, but non showed concern.

’They kept the news restricted from everyone except a select few. Well done.’

Moon nodded in approval internally.

Rowan, Talan, and the burly man had handled the situation exactly the way he would have wanted.

His injury had been serious enough that public knowledge could have have caused issues during his absence. By keeping the circle of informed personnel small, they had removed that.

He appreciated it more than he would have voiced.

Talan pushed through the parting crowd like a natural leader. He was one of the more influential figures within the base.

"Alright, everyone. Give the boss room to breathe. He’s not a spectacle. Back to your assignments."

The crowd began dispersing without complaint. Most of them still stole glances at Moon as they returned to their tasks, but the immediate attention faded quickly.

Talan turned back to Moon.

"Boss, there are a few things I need to talk to you about. Base matters. Do you have a minute?"

Moon nodded.

"Sure. Lead the way."

Talan gestured toward one of the smaller private rooms at the northern edge of the chamber. Moon followed him through the door.

The moment the door closed behind them, Talan’s stoic face changed.

The bossy authority he had worn in the main chamber vanished entirely. He turned toward Moon with a look of a big man who was terrible at hiding how much he cared.

"Boss. How are your injuries? Is everything actually good? Is your arm working properly? Are you sure you’re supposed to be back so soon? Should you be sitting down? Do you need water? Rowan told me to send him a message immediately if you returned, and I need to tell him and the brute anyway or the brute is going to actually kill me for keeping quiet, so I need to know if there’s anything I should be flagging."

He paused, took a breath, and started again.

"I’m sorry... How are you?"

Moon laughed softly.

"That’s a lot of questions in one breath."

"Yeah. Yeah, I know. Sorry. It’s just... you were down for a while. And we didn’t know for a long time whether you were going to wake up at all."

"I’m back to normal. Better than normal, actually. My body’s stronger than it was before the injuries."

Talan exhaled slowly.

The tension left his shoulders in a single long release.

"That’s good. That’s really good. We were worried sick, boss. All of us."

Moon’s expression softened.

"Thank you. I mean that."

Talan waved a hand dismissively, clearly uncomfortable in receiving gratitude from Moon.

"That’s what we’re here for."

"No. I mean that. Bring everyone else who was in knowledge about my condition to this room. I want to thank them personally. Face to face."

Talan straightened up, "Right away, boss."

♢♢♢♢

In the short span of ten minutes, the room filled with familiar faces.

Kellan arrived first. His face broke into a wide smile the moment he saw Moon standing there. He walked directly across the room and gave Moon a tight, careful hug that Moon returned without hesitation.

"Boss, you’re in good health...that’s good."

"I’m alright, Kellan. Thank you for helping me when I was unconscious."

Rowan came next. His eyes met Moon’s across the room and held there for a long moment before he inclined his head in a small, respectful nod.

The brute followed, entering the room with a massive grin, seeing Moon standing whole and healthy.

"Boss."

"Brute."

"You had us scared."

"Not as much as you have the poor people inside the base. Talan told me that some people mistook you for Big Foot at night."

The brute turned towards the tank with a massive frown on his face, "You little..."

Talan looked around the room, seemingly innocent.

The base’s head healer arrived a moment later, behind her came three more of the inner circle. The ones who had been informed of Moon’s condition and had helped coordinate during his unconscious time.

Moon thanked each of them personally.

Every one of them said the same thing in slightly different words.

"It was our job. We’re just glad you’re back."

After the thanks, Moon glanced at their gear.

His Eye of Truth cataloged their equipment quickly. Kellan carried an F-rank Second Order weapon, standard issue. The brute wielded an E-rank hammer that showed visible wear from hard use. The healer’s staff was E-rank as well, adequate but nothing special. The others carried gear at similar tiers.

Their equipment was a little outdated, and they could use something better.

Moon opened his storage ring.

He had accumulated significant loot during the tournament, which he had stored from the elites he had killed.

His storage ring held a large collection of Second Order equipment across multiple tiers.

He handed out D-rank items.

A D-rank weapon to Kellan, better balanced than his current F-rank one and carrying passive sharpness enhancement.

A D-rank hammer to the brute, forged with earth-element resonance that would supplement his build.

A D-rank staff to the healer, embedded with a mana efficiency rune that would extend her casting range. D-rank items to the other three inner circle members, each matched to their roles.

The group thanked Moon for the equipment with tears in their eyes.

D-rank Second Order items weren’t cheap.

Moon didn’t allow the moment to become heavy.

"Consider these an overdue equipment upgrade for your amazing services. You’ve been doing a great job at the base, and it only makes sense for you to get a raise."

Their gratitude came out in overlapping thanks once again. He accepted the acknowledgments briefly and gestured for them to head back to their duties. They were clearly eager to try them out.
