SSS Awakening: I Can Class Change at will

Before Moon and Rowan could leave the area, a shrill scream tore out of the ground beneath them.

The sound shook the earth.

Smaller rocks jumped upward from the vibration.

The high frequency of the cry punched into their skulls with a pressure that Moon felt behind his eyes.

For a moment, Rowan’s face went pale.

Moon turned toward him immediately.

"Are you okay?"

Rowan clutched his head with both hands, his fingers pressing hard against his temples. His teeth were clenched. He forced a nod through the pain.

"I-I’m fine, I wasn’t prepared for that scream... It was really strong."

Moon’s expression darkened.

"Create distance. It’s a beast that can attack through sound waves. The closer you are to it, the worse the damage. Move now."

Rowan didn’t argue. He backed away quickly, putting distance between himself and the crest of the hill.

Moon moved back too, creating a distance of fifty meters, touching down at the far edge of the region, putting a comfortable buffer between himself and the epicenter of the sound.

~Crack~

Several small branches snapped under his boots as he landed.

Moon ignored the sound. His focus stayed on the hill watching the patch of ground where the Mystical Sunflower had been rooted, waiting for the beast to emerge from where he predicted it would surface based on the direction the earlier scream had come from.

Moments passed yet nothing emerged.

The hilltop stayed silent and still.

Then the ground beneath Moon’s feet vibrated.

Moon’s instincts screamed at him.

He kicked off immediately, activating Air Step to launch himself upward and sideways in two consecutive explosive motions. His body cleared his previous position by five meters just as the ground beneath him erupted.

Earth spikes shot upward from the exact spot where he had been standing. A dozen sharp stone protrusions punched through the soil in a ring, some of them cracking against each other from the density of the emergence. A small figure flew out from the center of the eruption, launched by its own momentum into the open air.

Moon’s eyes locked onto it immediately.

The creature was small about the size of a small puppy. But it was terrifyingly grotesque. Its body carried the general shape of a bat, with two wings and a snub, upturned face.

The wings carried a subtle brown sheen and were adorned with sharp stone spikes running along their leading edges.

Its eyes glowed a deep golden brown, and its ears were oversized, twitching independently.

[Details: A rare subterranean beast that controls sound and earth elements. Uses shrill cries to disorient prey and stone spikes to strike or ambush. Possesses exceptional hearing that lets it track prey through soil.]

The Underground Bat hovered in the air before releasing another shrill cry.

Moon’s face grimaced. His ears throbbed and his concentration wavered for a fraction of a second.

The bat’s eyes locked onto him before flapping its wings once.

Dozens of earth spikes tore up from the ground beneath Moon. Moon’s Air Step activated again. He kicked off the air and cleared the spikes with a lateral burst, landing on a fresh section of the hilltop.

The bat cried again.

Moon cast a wind barrier around himself to lessen the impact, but the sound waves were still very annoying to deal with.

Moon’s teeth clenched and his ears rang.

’That’s a strong beast...At least high four-star.’

Although it was not a five-star beast, it’s sound wave attacks were incredibly effective.

~Whoosh~

Arrows tore across the open air, aimed at the bat’s flying position.

The Underground Bat’s oversized ears twitched sharply. Its head snapped toward the source of the arrows. Its body pivoted mid-air and the arrows passed through the space it had occupied a moment earlier without landing.

Moon’s eyes darted to Rowan.

Blood was running from Rowan’s ears. and his face was paler than before. His hand trembled slightly as he nocked his next arrow. The sound waves were causing his aim to lose its precision.

His shots would have landed cleanly under normal circumstances. The bat had identified Rowan as a viable secondary target.

It rushed towards him.

Earth spikes erupted from the ground along Rowan’s position, forcing him to sidestep repeatedly. At the same time, the bat unleashed another shrill cry, timed to hit Rowan just as he committed to a defensive stance against the stone.

Rowan staggered.

He raised his bow in front of him, in a desperate defensive posture as the bat closed the distance, its wing spikes angled forward for a diving strike.

Moon did not let the bat do as it pleased. Rowan was under his protection. He moved immediately.

Purple lightning crackled along his palm in a single instant. The purple bolt of pure carnage charged across the air, cutting between the bat and Rowan in a diagonal line.

The strike missed the dodging bat by a fraction, but it forced the creature to change direction sharply to avoid being caught. Its dive broke apart as its trajectory swept wide to avoid the attack.

The bat turned in mid-air and stared at Moon with hatred and a hint of wariness.

Then it folded its wings and dove down.

It plunged straight into the earth beneath the hilltop, disappearing into a fresh portion of loose soil. The ground closed behind it as if it had never existed.

The area went quiet, no longer terrorized by the bat’s bone-chilling cries.

Moon dropped down from Air Step and landed on the ground beside Rowan. Several branches cracked beneath his boots again as he touched down.

Rowan was breathing hard.

Blood still trickled from his ears. His hand was shaking as he tried to nock another arrow, but his fingers wouldn’t cooperate properly. The sound damage was interfering with his body control.

Moon stood beside him and turned in a slow circle, eyes tracking every possible angle the bat might use to emerge next.

His voice came low.

"It’s underground. I will cast a wind barrier around you, don’t move from it. Your body will be fine in a minute, just breathe." Moon instructed.

Rowan nodded, still trying to steady his shaking hands.

Moon’s eyes stayed on the ground.

He waited.
