Moon landed on the ground beside the fallen bat. His lightning was still crackling around his hand.

The bat struggled to rise. Its wing membranes twitched as it tried to force its body back into flight posture. Moon released another bolt into its chest.

The powerful current running through its body locked it down again, its small size contributing to the massive shut down as the current had less volume to travel across.

He didn’t rush.

He fired several more bolts into the bat over the following minute. Each one damaged the bat’s soul foundation a little more, cracking the defenses that would otherwise resist his mind-control technique. The bat’s cries grew weaker with each strike. Its eyes lost some of their previous intensity. Its body twitched as it struggled to stay conscious.

When Moon was satisfied, he stopped.

He activated Curse.

The thread reached across the small distance between them and hooked into the bat’s damaged soul without meaningful resistance. The bat’s body went still for a long moment. Its eyes fluttered for a brief moment before returning to its previous state, as if nothing had happened.

Moon exhaled slowly.

The connection had been established cleanly without any complications.

Rowan walked up to him from across the clearing.

His steps were slightly unsteady. Blood had dried along the sides of his neck where the earlier sound waves had ruptured small vessels in his ears.

Moon reached into his storage ring as Rowan approached and pulled out a small healing rune. He activated it with a subtle motion and placed it near Rowan.

The rune emitted a visible pulse of green light. Under the cover of the rune’s active glow, Moon quietly cast Minor Mend on Rowan.

The healing spread through Rowan’s body, soothing the dull headache, silencing the constant ringing in his ears, and easing the fatigue from his eyes.

Rowan exhaled slowly and touched his own ear.

"Thanks, boss. That’s a strong healing rune."

"It is, it will have you patched up in a few minutes. Although the full side-effects will take an hour or two to fully subside."

Rowan nodded before retrieving the rune from the floor, holding it closer to his body.

His eyes drifted to the fallen bat.

He studied it with a curious expression. The creature’s wings were folded loosely against its body. Its eyes were open but empty. It wasn’t struggling but it simply lay there, waiting.

"Are you not going to kill it?"

Moon turned to face Rowan with a small smile.

"Kill it? No. It’s more useful alive."

Rowan’s eyes drifted down to Moon’s hands.

Moon had pulled a small collar from his storage ring during their exchange. The item was a slim, dark ring of metal. It looked like a decorative piece at first glance. Only careful attention would identify the runes as active inscriptions.

Rowan’s brows rose.

"You mean... you’re going to sell it? It would be worth a lot if you sold it to the right beastmaster. A creature like this, at this rarity, could fetch a small fortune from someone who has the class to subdue it."

Moon shook his head casually.

"Why would I sell it? It’s mine now. I’ll subdue it myself."

Rowan looked at Moon in real shock.

The specific ability to subdue and command wild beasts required a beastmaster class variant. As far as Rowan knew, Moon was a mage with strong foundations with the sword. Which meant he shouldn’t have been able to bind a wild beast to his command under any conventional method.

Moon anticipated the question.

His voice stayed casual. "This collar is designed to help subdue powerful beasts. I got it from Tom. One of his Ascender friends developed it. New technology, it’s not out to the public yet as it’s still in the private testing phase. But with it, I can give this bat instructions and it will follow them without any of the usual beastmaster class requirements. Once I place it on him, he’ll serve us well."

Rowan absorbed the explanation.

"Oh. I see. That’s pretty cool, it will be pretty useful once it’s out to the public."

Moon nodded his head, "Indeed...I will try to grab a few for the rest of you guys at some point. You would do well with a beast companion around."

The believability of the lie hinged on Tom’s known network and Moon’s known relationship with him.

Besides, Rowan wasn’t going to dig deep to verify the story. He took things at face value, and never bothered to worry about the specifics, especially with things that didn’t concern him.

Moon lied so smoothly that he almost believed it himself.

Although he was slowly integrating into society under the banner Alaric had created for him, it was still far too early to reveal everything at once.

He had already displayed plenty of impossible abilities during his battle against the Dark Organisation, but there had been no cameras around for most of it. Cameras only began to capture the final stages of the battle, when he had been far too busy running for his life.

There were plenty of explanations he could give for the things witnesses had seen that should have been impossible.

’I’ll slowly begin revealing my class skills. For now, my mage skills, runesmithing, and swordsmanship are already out there for everyone to see. That’s enough.’

The [Curse] skill was simply too dangerous to reveal openly. The implications of a fighter possessing a mind-control technique capable of dominating others were not something Moon wanted the wider world to know about.

Especially when even Layla the Witch had been shunned during her early life as an Awakener because her skills were considered "evil." to the general public.

Moon had no time to deal with that kind of trouble right now.

The collar was a convenient cover.

It served the purpose of making his beast control appear technological rather than skill-based. If anyone ever noticed his controlled beasts moving under his command, the collar would be the credited source rather than any personal ability of his own.
