SSS Awakening: In a New World with Dual God-Level Bloodlines
Chapter 40: Awakening A Basic System Ability"A Rare-grade cyber skill."
"And how many skills are usually implanted in Cyber Transplants?" Arlo asked.
"At minimum, three cyber skills are implanted into every Cyber Transplantation, although they only awaken under intense circumstances when specific conditions are met."
"The higher the grade of your Cyber Transplantation, the more skills can potentially be implanted within it," Ennessa explained.
"So how many cyber skills are concealed within my Cyber Transplantation?" Arlo asked curiously.
"Delaney said she implanted a total of five, but she can’t say for certain whether that number has increased or decreased because a higher-up in the Orano Transfusion Group tweaked your cybernetic fusion afterward."
"She doesn’t know whether he touched the cyber skills she originally implanted into your fusion. He might have, or he might not have. Who knows?" Ennessa said.
Arlo’s eyes were anything but calm as suspicion slowly filled them.
Of course, he had learned about the man who tweaked his cybernetic fusion by eavesdropping on their conversation, but he had never realized that the man could also have access to the skills concealed within his cybertech.
The man’s actions were becoming increasingly suspicious.
"Can I ask what the higher-up’s name is?" Arlo suddenly asked.
"Noblese. Noblese Extorix, the newly reinstated Head of the Orano Cyber Transfusion Company in Sector H," Ennessa replied without much thought.
"Newly reinstated head, huh? I wonder what happened to the former head," Arlo probed.
"He retired."
"At what age?"
"Fifty-seven."
"Is that a normal age to retire?" Arlo asked, and Ennessa finally looked away from her papers, her mouth parting slightly.
"What did you just say?"
"I’m simply asking why someone would retire at fifty-seven. That doesn’t sound like a normal retirement age to me," he replied.
Ennessa’s eyebrows furrowed as she considered his words, but they soon relaxed.
"Who cares?" she said, simply shrugging it off.
"Training is done for today."
"Since you’ve demonstrated the ability to defeat Noir Realm Vorath, which are the only ones capable of entering human cities without triggering the alarms because of their relatively low energy levels, I’d say you shouldn’t die during this mission unless you somehow allow yourself to get surrounded."
Ennessa said as she began walking toward the exit.
"But I must remind you of something. Using cyber skills drains your Core’s energy faster than normal, so never use them without necessity."
"Whenever you do activate one, know that you’ll burn through your available energy in at most five minutes."
"You have the rest of today and all of tomorrow to rest before the mission, so don’t use them foolishly," she warned before completely disappearing through the exit, the sound of her footsteps on the staircase gradually fading away.
"Huuuuuu..."
Arlo exhaled as she disappeared, slumping tiredly against his seat.
"Redshift, huh? I can’t wait to see the remaining skills," he said before calling out in his mind.
[System Interface.]
[Congratulations. Main Quest: Defeat the Creature has been completed.]
[Reward:
1.) +300 EXP.
2.) A New System Basic Ability.]
[System Interface]
[Name: Arlo]
[Title: None]
[Race: Lesser Arcana Human]
[Cultivation: First Core Enhancer]
[Level: 3]
[EXP: 500/500]
[Would you like to level up?]
"Yes."
[Congratulations. Host has leveled up to Level 4.]
[+10 Attribute Points Obtained.]
[Attributes]
[Strength: 20 (+15)]
[Agility: 15 (+15)]
[Perception: 15]
[Intelligence: 15]
[Charm: 4]
[Attribute Points: 10]
[How would you like to distribute your Attribute Points?]
"Wait, what are those bracketed stat points?" Arlo asked, noticing the strange (+15) beside some of his attributes.
[They are additional stat points gained from your cybernetic fusion. Your Strength and Agility increased as a result of the fusion and are displayed separately to show that they came from an external source of power rather than from your natural growth.]
"Fusing with the Godbreaker nearly doubled my physical abilities. Now I’m even more certain that undergoing the fusion was the right move," Arlo mused aloud.
"But with my Perception and Intelligence still lagging behind, what exactly do those two stats do, System?" Arlo asked, wondering whether they might be worth investing his points into.
[Perception helps with sensory range.]
[If an attack were to come toward you from behind, sufficient Perception could allow you to detect and dodge it without ever seeing it directly.]
[It also improves your ability to react to attacks and can save your life during critical moments.]
[Once Perception reaches sufficiently high levels, you may even be able to predict an opponent’s movements before they happen, making sneak attacks nearly useless.]
[Intelligence directly improves your understanding and control of magic.]
[It makes you more receptive to the unconventional ideas that form the foundation of magic while also improving your ability to process information and make decisions.]
With the incoming mission, I’d need all the strength I can get. My magical powers must remain hidden throughout, so putting stats into Intelligence for the sake of magic isn’t the best thing to do for now.
Arlo quickly made his choice.
"Add five Attribute Points to Strength and the remaining five to Perception."
[Congratulations. Points have been successfully distributed.]
[Attributes]
[Strength: 40]
[Agility: 30]
[Perception: 20]
[Intelligence: 20]
[Charm: 4]
[Attribute Points: 0]
[A New Panel Has Been Created, and a New System Ability Has Been Bestowed.]
[System Basic Ability]
[Dash: Doubles the Host’s Speed.]
???
"Oh. So that’s the new System ability. Dash, huh?" Arlo mused.
"Now I have two abilities focused on speed, Dash and Redshift. If I activate them together, my speed should reach four times its normal level."
"I doubt even a Lower Anouq Realm Vorath’s tentacles would be able to catch me then," Arlo said, still remembering his last embarrassing defeat.
With the cybernetic fusion now complete and my cybertech growing without requiring any special cultivation, I should focus on my magic training again, Arlo thought.
The next instant, he rose from his seat and headed back toward his room.
[During your previous cultivation session, you opened pathways that allow Mana to flow through your body and connect directly to your heart and brain, the two sources of your magical bloodlines.]
[All that remains is to form vessels capable of holding Mana within your heart and brain. Once you accomplish that, you will have reached the first stage of magic cultivation: Magic Apprentice,] the system declared.
Arlo nodded before sitting cross-legged on the bare ground.
"And how do I form the vessels inside my heart and brain?" he asked.
[Just as you have done before. Kneel on both knees, but this time, don’t stretch your hands outward. Simply keep them resting on your lap.]
The system instructed him, and Arlo got onto both knees.
[Good. Now form the hand seal you said you were taught. That should create the connection needed for the vessels to begin forming.]
[Once you do that, simply will the Mana to come and focus your consciousness on both your heart and brain to monitor the vessels’ growth.]
"Huuuuuu..."
Arlo slowly exhaled, regulating his breathing and calming his heart as he knelt on both knees and prepared for another cultivation session.
After several minutes of silence, he brought his palms together and formed a hand seal, one he had practiced more than a hundred times in the past.
Once again, silence descended upon the room.
Slowly, dark particles began appearing out of thin air and drifting toward Arlo’s body, although none of them immediately touched him as they simply hovered around him.
Then the system’s voice spoke once more.
[You must focus your consciousness on your brain and heart simultaneously,] it reminded him.
"And how am I supposed to do that?" Arlo asked.
He had never been taught by his clan that he would one day form Mana vessels, so he knew almost nothing about the process.
[To focus your attention on your heart, try to feel its beating. Follow every pulse and every moment it pumps blood through your body. Feel the ripple created by the movement of that blood.]
[That same ripple will help you direct your attention toward your brain. Simply try it. Begin by following your heartbeat, then will the Mana to flow through your opened Mana pathways.]
The system finished explaining, and Arlo immediately concentrated.
His entire world fell into complete silence until he was finally able to focus his attention on his heart, feeling every beat with remarkable clarity.
Mana entered through his nose and mouth before flowing into his body, spreading through him with a cool, refreshing sensation.
[The Mana flows through your entire body. Follow the path of the Mana entering your brain. Once you do, you will be able to focus your consciousness there as well.]
The system explained, and Arlo did exactly that, following the flow of Mana through his body until he focused on a stream making its way toward his brain.
Maintaining his focus on his heart’s beating while simultaneously sensing his brain was far more difficult than he had expected.
More than two hours passed before Arlo finally sensed a smooth connection forming between the blood flowing toward his brain and the blood circulating back toward his heart.
[You have done it. A smooth connection has been established, one that will remain until your Mana vessels have been successfully formed.]
The system’s voice sounded just as Arlo opened his eyes and fell backward onto the ground.
Kneeling for two hours straight had made his spine feel as though it were about to shatter, and he immediately felt the urge to rest it.
Even now, despite no longer actively cultivating, he could faintly sense the connection between his heart and brain.
[Now, all you need to do is slowly strengthen that connection by continuously absorbing Mana into your Mana pathways.]
[You don’t need to worry about deliberately forming the vessels yourself. The Mana vessels within your heart and brain will naturally develop as the connection becomes stronger.]
The system spoke, but Arlo spent only about three minutes resting his aching back before getting to his feet and stretching until the pain slowly disappeared.
Once it was gone, he immediately sat back down and formed the same hand seal.
"But... why wait for the vessels to form themselves slowly if I can form them quickly?"
