It hadn’t been long since Ethan woke up from his slumber. Although to him, the entire thing had only felt like a short and fleeting dream, nearly fifty years had already gone by in the outside world.

His human body had turned into a zombie, and somehow, he had awakened a special system, obtained an SSS-rank class, and gained skills and traits that continuously changed the limits of what he could do.

But throughout all this time, there was one thing that Ethan had been concerned about—his identity.

What had become of him?

What was he now?

A human? Or a monster?

During his evolution, when the Overlord System had asked Ethan to choose a power system, Ethan had pondered this one question deeply, eventually coming to a conclusion that had followed him until now.

’I’m neither a human nor a monster.’ He recalled his own thoughts, slowly curling his fingers into fists behind his back as his gaze remained fixed on Clara.

In front of him, a small translucent system screen floated silently, emitting a soft cerulean hue that illuminated his jade-green face slightly.

[Total Undead Under Authority:]

The losses were severe.

For a moment, even Ethan could feel his anger rising, since he had gone through quite some trouble to subdue the blood ants and bring them under his authority.

But now, nearly a quarter of them had been slaughtered without him even knowing who the attackers were.

Most importantly, Ethan had no idea exactly how many awakeners had entered the nest.

Was it one? Three? Or perhaps even more?

His thoughts continuously wandered through different possibilities, trying to understand the current situation while also calculating the possible strength of the attackers. But right as he was still thinking about the different consequences, Clara decided to act first.

As a fire-type skill user, she naturally possessed a fiery personality and hardly ever avoided fighting monsters.

Now that she had been left behind by her group, she was also lacking contributions.

’A normal zombie surviving inside a nest full of zombified blood ants... There has to be a connection.’ Her eyes slowly narrowed as she stared at Ethan.

’Maybe it can compensate for me...’

Without wasting another moment, Clara carefully lowered Christine from her shoulder and placed her against the stone wall, making sure that her unconscious body remained stable before she finally straightened herself.

The next moment, a powerful surge of Nox erupted from within her body.

A layer of fire suddenly spread across Clara’s entire physique, wrapping around her body and burning bright enough to eradicate the darkness inside the tunnel. Her own appearance became almost impossible to look at directly due to the intense heat and light radiating from her.

Seeing this, Ethan narrowed his eyes. A faint grunt escaped his throat.

He was being rushed into taking action. But at the same time, Ethan didn’t immediately move.

Instead, he remained standing where he was, silently watching the human awakener as his mind rapidly processed her movements.

Then, in the next instant, Clara’s figure disappeared without a trace. For a split second, the light inside the tunnel flickered strangely.

Immediately, Ethan’s senses detected the sudden change in the flames behind him as the light intensified around his back and Clara’s presence appeared within striking distance.

Yet he didn’t react, and instead, he deliberately allowed her attack to succeed.

BOOM!

Clara’s fist landed directly in the center of his back. A sharp crack snapped through his body as several bones broke instantly beneath the force of the attack, while the flames surrounding Clara’s body followed the impact and spread across Ethan’s jade-green skin.

The fire rapidly crawled through his back as a foul smell of burning and rotting flesh leaked into the tunnel.

Seeing her attack succeed, Clara’s lips curled into a twisted grin.

Aside from being fiery by nature, she also possessed a habit of playing with her prey, and now that she had realized her attack had landed cleanly against this strange zombie, the amusement in her eyes became increasingly obvious.

She had expected him to at least dodge or block her attack—but he didn’t.

For a moment, Clara thought that she had overestimated him. However, it didn’t take long for her to change her mind.

└ ■ Regeneration (C)

The fire that should have continuously spread around Ethan’s body and burned him from the inside suddenly stopped progressing.

Then, with every passing breath, the flame began shrinking. The burnt flesh slowly regained its original jade-green shade as though nothing had happened, while the bones that had broken beneath Clara’s attack slowly shifted and stuck back together, perfectly repairing the damage within only a short amount of time.

Right before Clara’s eyes, the flames completely extinguished while the tunnel once again became darker.

Ethan slowly straightened his body and concluded in silence. ’So that’s the extent of a D-rank’s power...’

His previous guess had most likely been correct. The woman before him was indeed a genuine D-rank awakener, and her physical strength and abilities were far greater than the E-ranks he had encountered before.

However, the difference wasn’t enough to make Ethan lose his confidence. Her attacks could injure him; that much was obvious, but they weren’t capable of killing him. At least, not when his regeneration was still active.

Slowly turning around, Ethan faced Clara with a straight face and bland expression—one could even call it lifeless.

There was no anger on his face despite having his bones broken just moments ago, nor was there any visible fear or pain within his jade-green eyes.

But strangely, that was exactly what made Clara feel increasingly uneasy.

Her previous grin had already disappeared, and for a moment, she simply stared at him in confusion.

’How could my flames be extinguished?’

’How did a zombie withstand that attack?’

The thoughts raced through her mind, but Clara quickly regained her composure since a single failed attack wasn’t enough to make her retreat.

The flames around her body surged once again as Clara lowered her stance and rushed forward; her movements became so fast that Ethan’s eyes could barely follow them.

This time, she appeared directly before him and struck her fist forward.

BOOM!

The powerful punch landed directly against Ethan’s stomach. The force pushed through his body and forced him to bend slightly forward as his abdominal muscles tightened beneath the impact.

But... that was the extent of it.

Clara certainly felt something amiss. But before she could properly react, he moved once again.

His speed couldn’t hold a candle to Clara’s, which was only natural since he had barely invested anything into his agility.

But unlike his agility, Ethan’s strength was different, as it was the attribute he had invested in the most.

Combined with his naturally muscular zombie body and the strength gained through his evolution, Ethan’s raw physical power already rivaled that of top-tier genuine D-rank awakeners.

He launched his punch forward. There was no complicated technique behind it—only raw strength concentrated into a single attack.

BAM!

Ethan’s fist landed directly in Clara’s stomach, turning her expression ugly. The moment it connected, Clara felt her entire body convulsing as the sheer force traveled through her muscles and organs, while her feet rose several inches off the ground and her body bent around Ethan’s fist.

Her mouth opened wide, and a violent cough escaped her throat with several sharp gasps. The veins around her neck bulged as she struggled to breathe.

Immediately, Clara forced herself backwards, stumbling several steps before putting enough distance between herself and Ethan while breathing in deeply in an attempt to calm the intense pain spreading through her abdomen.

Ethan, on the other hand, didn’t attack during this period. Rather, He simply stood there and silently observed her.
