SSS Primeval Devourer: Every Path I Devour Becomes Mine
Chapter 80: House Talvern Buries Its Second CaptainCorvain’s left forearm stump was hooked under the final lever.
The lever sat above the third drum. One downward heave would drop the remaining quarry face over the bend where the carts had just cleared. His right wrist was destroyed. His left hand lay beside the pistol crossbow. His right Achilles had been cut. The mechanism still gave him one way to kill people he could no longer reach: body weight through the forearm caught beneath it.
Vhar cut the lever from its housing with Radrazh.
SHRAK!
The blade went through iron, wood, and Corvain’s left forearm. The severed stump fell away with the lever. Corvain stared at it for half a breath.
Vhar stepped inside his reach.
The captain snapped his right shoulder forward. A spring spike bolted inside the bracer over his ruined wrist shot from the sleeve toward Vhar’s eye. Vhar caught the forearm, folded the arm across Corvain’s chest, and broke the elbow against his own shoulder.
CRACK!
"HHRK!"
Corvain tried to throw his weight backward into the wall.
Vhar closed his left hand around a fist-wide fold of black breastplate over Corvain’s sternum.
| TITANFOLD |
DOOOOM!
The breastplate, sternum, and three ribs inside Vhar’s fist imploded together. A palm-wide hollow opened in Corvain’s chest. Black metal, bone fragments, and blood burst out between Vhar’s fingers. Corvain hit the wall and screamed until the scream turned into a wet choke.
Corvain stayed on the broken floor. His right heel dragged uselessly behind him. He rolled onto his left hip and forced his left shoulder forward over the hollow in his chest.
The hollow should have folded him in half. His back bowed, then locked against the stone. The muscles along his spine knotted hard enough to keep his remaining ribs from collapsing into the empty chest.
Ironblood Frame. Fifth Bloodmark.
It kept him breathing through a chest no ordinary body would carry. It did not give him a hand, a planted right heel, or another escape.
It did not stop Vhar.
Vhar drove his forehead into Corvain’s face.
CRACK!
The captain’s nose and upper teeth broke inward. Vhar’s knee hit the exposed ribs. One gave, then a second. Corvain bent around the damage. Vhar caught his throat and drove him across the stone floor.
THOOM!
The quarry house shook. Corvain’s back struck hard enough to split the floor beneath him. He shoved his left knee and shoulder against the floor toward the missing lever, blood pouring from his mouth.
Vhar put a boot on his spine.
Corvain’s ribs moved once beneath the boot. He had not stopped trying to reach the lever. Blood ran across the broken floor from both ruined arms. His eyes stayed fixed on the open doorway and the road below it.
"The ridge ledger is in the stone storehouse," Corvain said through blood. "Every witness. Every ration cart. Burn it and the road is blind again."
Vhar looked down the road. Hessa had one hand on the first cart’s brake rope. The woman with the beans was bent over both children in the ditch. The route worker was holding the mule’s head because the animal kept trying to bolt toward the falling stone.
"You built a ledger beside powder," Vhar said. "It is still there."
The road outside carried people still running from the falling wall. Nyra’s voice reached him through the broken doorway.
"West side is clear!"
Vhar heard the last stones settle into the empty ditch.
RUMBLE!
The road had held.
Corvain turned his head enough to see the sky through the doorway. "House Talvern will send another."
"They can bury this one first."
Vhar drew Ulqor with his left hand.
He drove Ulqor’s point beneath Corvain’s left collarbone, through the artery and lung beneath it, and out behind his shoulder against the stone floor.
SPLT!
Corvain’s body arched once. The strength left his spine under Vhar’s boot. His remaining blade lay broken in the dust. His severed left hand, the lever, and the black breastplate lay beside him.
Vhar pulled Ulqor free and wiped it on Corvain’s torn coat.
The captain’s body did not move again. Blood spread beneath his shoulder and entered the cracks Vhar’s impact had made in the floor. The final lever lay severed beside the left hand. The broken House sword had no edge left on the side Radrazh had struck.
Outside, Nyra stood at the road edge with soot across her face and a split line in her sleeve. Thronebreak was still in her hand.
"The east wagons are out," she said. "No one under the wall."
"The west carts?"
"Hessa moved them before the last stone fell. One mule is lame, and every person is clear."
Vhar looked at Corvain’s corpse. The captain had spent men, fire, stone, and a road to make a body disappear.
The body stayed where it fell.
By noon, the workers had cleared enough broken stone for the first wagon to pass Kessendrel’s north bend. Hessa walked beside it with her scraper tucked through her belt. The route worker with torn palms drove the mule. Behind them came two carts of flour, a cart of burned boards bound for repair, and the woman who had counted beans that morning.
The route worker’s older boy came out of the cistern tunnel wrapped in a dry coat. He saw his father at the mule and ran the last ten steps.
THUD!
His father caught him hard enough to lift both feet off the road. The boy buried his face against the torn-palm worker’s shoulder. The man kept one hand on the reins and the other around his son until the mule tugged them both forward.
The first wheel crossed the place where Corvain’s wall had been.
CLATTER!
No one cheered at first. They watched the cart clear the gap. When the second wheel followed, the woman with the beans began laughing into both hands.
The sound reached the road and spread.
CLAP! CLAP! CLAP!
Hands struck together among the workers. The sound was ragged. Some people were crying while they made it. The mother with the beans laughed once, then covered her face with both hands because she could not keep doing either thing cleanly.
Vhar stood above the opened pass while the last of the dust settled in his lungs. The fight had spent him down to the part of himself that did not answer to muscle alone. His body had carried stone, held weight, cut men, and kept moving.
Now the marrow inside his bones answered the blood it had spent.
His pulse struck once.
Warmth rose from the deep places of his body and filled the emptied spaces behind it. The return belonged to him. The loop closed because his living body had finally carried its whole return from marrow to blood and back again.
He stopped beside the road while Nyra watched him.
"Vhar?"
He breathed in. The breath came easier. His heart struck again, and this time the reserve did not merely return. It held.
The SSS Primeval Bloodforge opened before his eyes.

Vhar let the words remain long enough to understand them, then closed his hand around empty air.
Nyra had not seen the panel. She saw his shoulders settle and the blood leave none of his color.
"Is it bad?"
"No." He looked down the reopened pass. "It is finished."
Three riders appeared on the eastern road before the first flour cart reached them. They wore no House Talvern colors. Each carried a sealed provincial transit board across the saddle.
The lead rider saw Corvain’s body in the quarry house and the open pass behind Vhar.
"Who held this road?" she asked.
Hessa lifted her scraper toward the workers, the wagons, Nyra, and Vhar. "We did."
The rider dismounted and looked at the carts already crossing the cleared bend. "The eastern posts have been waiting for proof the pass can carry freight. I will send word before night."
"Send the word that there is food moving both ways," Hessa said. "Not a House request. A road."
The rider looked at the flour carts, the broken wall, and the bodies being covered beside the quarry house. "I will send that report."
The route worker looked toward Corvain’s house. "What happens to him?"
"The provincial dead clerk will mark the body," the rider said. "His House can send for him if it wants him."
Hessa snorted once. "Make them use the road."
The rider looked at her, then nodded. "That belongs in the report too."
House Talvern’s second captain lay dead above a road the House had tried to starve shut.
The Academy was far behind Vhar now. Its gate, its reader offices, and its protection had become part of the road that had brought him here, not the ground that held him.
Nyra looked west once, toward the direction First Measure lay beyond more roads than either of them could see. She did not look back a second time.
Nyra stepped beside him as the first wagon passed.
"Where does a road like this go next?"
Vhar watched the eastern riders turn their horses toward provincial ground.
"Far enough that House Talvern has to answer outside its own walls."
The pass opened east.
So did the next war.
