SSS Primeval Devourer: Every Path I Devour Becomes Mine
Chapter 86: Encirclement Sealed in Blood! IIThe spear came from beneath the eastern wagon low enough to take Vhar through the heel.
He saw the hand first: grimy knuckles closing around the shaft in the shadow under the bed. The point followed, scraping the road as the man shoved it toward the tendon above Vhar’s ankle.
Vhar shifted his weight, reached over his left shoulder, and drew Radrazh through its open rear channel. His cut drove through the iron socket behind the spearhead and into the stone.
CLANG!
Metal rang. The severed shaft jumped backward under the wagon. The man beneath it swore, breathless and close.
Across the split road, hammers struck the western barricade.
Behind Vhar, three carters abandoned a stalled flour cart and scrambled down the gully wall. The oldest dragged the youngest beneath the stone shelf beside Fenn’s body before the crossbows found the road.
THUD!
THUD!
THUD!
The wagon bed shivered. A panel dropped between its rear braces. Two crossbows pushed through the opening.
Elara was already moving toward them, shield raised. Her crimson hair had come loose at one temple. She did not look frightened. That did not make the distance between her and four hidden men any smaller.
"West side," she said. "Don’t crowd it."
Vhar looked down the road. Nyra was beside him. Elara was not asking permission, and running after her would turn three people into a worse problem.
He hated leaving someone inside a fight he could reach.
He hated, more, the thought of making her prove she had come here only to stand behind him.
"Break it," he said.
Elara’s mouth tightened once, almost a smile. "Gladly."
The crossbows fired.
THWACK!
One bolt buried in her shield. She caught the second on the iron rim, knocked it down, and kept walking. The men behind the boards shouted at her. Elara answered by driving the shield’s lower edge into the dropped panel hard enough to fold it inward.
Nyra settled on Vhar’s left, Thronebreak low beneath her arm. Her eyes moved once over the eastern wagon, measuring boots, gaps, and the chains looped around its axles.
"One below, four on top, and more behind the bed," Nyra said. "I want the left axle."
"Take it."
The eastern panel fell.
Four men came over the wagon at once.
One jumped with a hooked sword clenched between his teeth. Two dropped behind round shields. The fourth drove a long spear down at Nyra’s face.
Nyra moved before the spearhead finished falling. She drove Thronebreak beneath the man’s ribs. The point punched out through his back, and the force folded him over the shaft. She planted a boot on the wagon side, shoved herself upward, and kicked the nearest shieldman square in the mouth.
CRACK!
His teeth scattered onto the road.
Vhar met the swordsman as he dropped.
Vhar reached over his right shoulder, drew Ulqor through its open rear channel, and stabbed up beneath the man’s jaw as the falling body struck him. Steel tore through tongue, palate, and the base of the skull. The corpse hit Vhar’s chest, shuddered, and sagged down the blade.
Vhar wrenched Ulqor free. He caught the corpse by the coat and hurled it into the second shieldman.
THUD!
The shieldman staggered under the dead man’s weight. Vhar was on him before the guard came back up.
He cut down with Radrazh. The edge split the shield’s iron rim, opened the forearm behind it, and bit through the side of the man’s throat. Before the man could fall, Vhar drove Ulqor through the gap below the breastplate and through the artery above his heart.
Blood struck the rock on either side of the road.
Bodies, loose shields, and the shattered spear were closing the road around them. The attackers wanted the space clogged. They did not need to beat him cleanly. One hook in his blood and enough weight to keep him still would do.
On Nyra’s side, a chain rasped over stone.
She had thrust Thronebreak through the left axle brace and caught the chain ring behind it. Her hips dropped. Both hands locked around the shaft.
"Now," she said, voice tight with effort.
Two men shoved the loaded wagon from behind. The whole bed lurched toward her.
Nyra did not give ground. She planted Thronebreak’s butt against the road and took the axle against the shaft.
BOOM!
Stone cracked beneath the planted end. The ashwood flexed between Nyra’s hands and the road. Her shoulders sank half a hand-width. Her knees bent. They stopped there.
Vhar drove Uvar down through his right hip, knee, ankle, and heel. He stepped into the exposed wheel and stamped the hub.
BOOM!
Spokes burst out. The iron band split. The wagon’s rear corner dropped hard enough to smash a sideboard, and quarried stone spilled over the men pushing behind it.
One disappeared beneath the bed. Another jumped late. A block caught his shin and snapped it both ways. He screamed once, then collapsed into the trench where the wheel had been.
The shieldman Nyra had kicked lurched around the wagon’s front corner with blood running from his mouth. He dropped his shield, drew two short blades, and slashed at her face.
Thronebreak was still trapped through the axle brace.
Nyra released one hand. Her forearm knocked his right wrist aside. She rammed the spear shaft across his throat, stepped behind his knee, and hauled him over her hip before his second blade could turn.
CRACK!
His skull struck the broken hub.
She tore Thronebreak free and turned toward the man crawling from the wheel trench.
Vhar saw the coil at the man’s belt at the same moment he did. Four hooked teeth folded inside it. The man rolled onto his back, twisted the release toward the blood soaking Vhar’s shirt, and pulled the pin.
A crossbow fired from behind the wagon.
THWACK!
The bolt struck below Vhar’s right shoulder blade. The head hit a rib and stopped. Heat tore across his back. The wire teeth sprang for the wound.
Nyra caught the cable on Thronebreak before they reached him. She wrapped it twice around the shaft and yanked.
The crawling man came off the ground by his own belt.
"You brought a leash," Nyra said. "Keep it."
She drove the butt of Thronebreak into his mouth.
CRACK!
His jaw turned sideways. The release handle spun across the road. Nyra stamped it flat, bent the trigger under her heel, and dragged the barbed line clear of Vhar’s back.
Another bolt hit the wall where her head had been.
Vhar caught the shaft protruding from his back, close to the wound, and pulled it backward free. The broadhead scraped his rib on the way out. Blood ran beneath his belt.
The shooter rose above the wagon board to reload.
Vhar set his feet and threw the blood-slick bolt over the wagon board.
The bolt crossed the wagon top toward the shooter’s open mouth.
SHNK!
The broadhead drove through his mouth and broke out behind his neck.
He folded over the board with both hands still around the crossbow.
Someone whimpered beneath the shelf beside Fenn’s body. The three carters had wedged themselves together, the oldest holding the youngest flat while loose stone bounced over them.
Nyra looked at them without taking her eyes off the road for long. "Stay down," she called. "Run only when I say the road is clear."
The old carter swallowed and nodded. He pulled the younger man farther beneath the stone instead of trying to bolt through the fighting.
The man with the broken shin clawed for the flattened trigger.
Vhar cut his hand from the wrist. The severed fingers stayed curled around the bent iron.
For half a breath, the man stared at them as if he had forgotten whose hand it was.
Vhar put a boot on his chest. Ribs bowed beneath the sole. He drove Ulqor through the man’s left eye until the blade struck the road under the back of his skull.
CLACK!
The legs kicked once and lay still.
"More behind the bed," Nyra said.
Vhar heard boots grinding backward through loose rock. A voice on the far side shouted for the last chain to hold.
He caught the tilted wagon by its rear brace.
The load was quarried stone. One wheel was gone. The other had jammed in the eastern throat. His cracked ribs pulled when he lifted. The bolt wound burned beneath his shoulder blade. For an instant, the strain split the work apart: arms to hold, legs to move, back to endure, each one paying alone.
That had always been the waste in him.
He tightened his hands on the brace.
Uvar gathered in his shoulders and ran down his spine. It crossed both hips, filled his knees, ankles, and feet, then climbed back through him without abandoning the lower half of his body. The load stayed in his arms. His legs still belonged to him.
Vhar turned under the wagon.
The fourth circuit closed.
BOOM!
He tore the wagon free of the road and overturned it onto the men behind it.
The remaining chain ripped from its pin. One attacker threw himself clear. Nyra drove Thronebreak through his lower back and out beneath his navel before he found his knees. She pulled him toward her, planted a boot between his shoulders, and withdrew the spear.
The wagon came down on the other two beneath its spilled stone. One died without a sound. The second screamed until a slab shifted over his chest.
CRACK!
The eastern block was gone.
Vhar’s pulse hit once. Current moved from his feet through his hips, spine, shoulders, and back again. His legs did not empty beneath the return.
The SSS Primeval Bloodforge opened a focused record across his sight.

He closed it before the stones stopped settling.
Nyra crouched beside the dead man with the wire coil. Using Thronebreak’s edge, she lifted the belt clear of the blood. A flat piece of numbered metal was riveted underneath.
"Four again," she said.
"The number matches. The mark does not."
Vhar wiped the metal on the dead man’s sleeve. The number matched Corvain’s. The mark beneath it did not. Corvain’s fitting had carried three short cuts around the numeral. This one bore a split circle.
Different hands. Same work.
The western wagon slammed into something hard.
BOOM!
Wood burst above its left wheel. A man screamed. Elara’s voice carried through the cut, raw with effort and anger.
"If that’s you, Blackvein, stop admiring your work and find someone to kill!"
Nyra’s mouth pulled at one corner despite the blood running from her brow. "She sounds occupied."
Vhar reached over his right shoulder and locked Ulqor into its cross-backed scabbard. He slipped the second stamp into his belt pouch.
He ran past Fenn’s body, reached to the rock shelf without stopping, and snatched the first stamped plate with his left hand. He pushed it into the pouch beside the second.
"Leave one breathing," he said.
Before he reached the western bend, he drew Ulqor again over his right shoulder. Another body struck the boards from the far side.
