SSS-Rank Awakening: My Talent Multiplies Everything
Chapter 196: The Target. The moment the words left Lady Angela’s mouth, the entire room fell silent.
The music from the club outside continued to thrum faintly through the walls, but inside the private room, not a single person spoke. Morgan’s expression remained frozen for several seconds before he finally broke the silence.
"Come on, Lady Angela. It’s not like that."
He forced a smile onto his face.
"The captain has no intention of avoiding you. It’s just that, as you know, the Dark Viper Guild has been growing rapidly. Unfortunately, that also means there are countless matters for the captain to handle, so he’s been extremely busy dealing with them."
"Oh?"
Angela raised an eyebrow.
"Is that so?"
Morgan nodded.
"Of course."
"Then shouldn’t you be helping him?"
Morgan’s smile stiffened.
Angela’s eyes swept across the room.
"Yet here you are, sitting in a private room, drinking, partying, and enjoying yourself."
She tilted her head slightly.
"Should I take that to mean the vice captain of the Dark Viper Guild is incompetent?"
Morgan was caught off guard.
His mouth opened, but for once, no excuse immediately came to mind.
Angela had struck directly at the weakness in his explanation.
Fortunately, she didn’t continue pressing him.
"Anyway, that’s not why I’m here."
She casually waved her hand.
"We can discuss your guild’s attitude toward me another time. I’m here today because I have a mission for you."
Morgan’s expression immediately became more serious.
"Or are you too busy to complete one?"
"Lady Angela, you jest."
Morgan quickly sat down across from her, his previous irritation disappearing behind a professional smile.
"It’s always our pleasure to assist you."
He leaned forward slightly.
"So, what is the task?"
Angela’s expression remained calm.
"I want to put a hit on someone."
The room immediately fell silent again.
Morgan stared at her.
For several seconds, he didn’t say anything.
Then he cleared his throat awkwardly.
"Lady Angela, that might be a little difficult."
Angela’s eyes narrowed.
"The Dark Viper Guild no longer offers that kind of service. We only handle matters related to guild operations now. You know that."
Angela scoffed.
"What difference does it make whether you’re the Viper Gang or the Dark Viper Guild?"
Morgan’s expression tightened.
"They’re not the same thing."
"Really?"
Angela leaned back.
"You changed the name, put up a righteous-looking banner, and suddenly you’re respectable?"
Morgan’s jaw tightened.
Angela continued before he could respond.
"You people still handle dirty business behind that pretty cover of a guild, don’t you?"
"Lady Angela, we..."
"Don’t forget who got you here."
Her voice suddenly became colder.
"I can easily bring you down whenever I want."
Morgan’s expression immediately darkened.
"Are you threatening us right now?"
Angela didn’t even flinch.
"I’m merely stating a fact."
She crossed her arms across her chest.
"This has always been about mutual benefit. The Dark Viper Guild scratches my back, and I return the favor."
Her eyes met Morgan’s.
"That’s how it’s always worked, and that’s how it should remain."
She smiled faintly.
"After all, nothing beats trust and loyalty in business."
Her gaze sharpened.
"Or are you telling me the Dark Viper Guild lacks both?"
Morgan’s teeth ground together.
For a brief moment, anger flashed across his face, but he quickly forced himself to calm down.
He couldn’t afford to lose his temper.
Not with Angela.
"You’re right."
His voice was controlled, although there was a trace of venom hidden beneath the words.
"Nothing beats trust and loyalty."
Angela seemed completely unfazed by his tone.
She simply reached into her expensive purse and pulled out a photograph.
She placed it on the table between them.
"That’s him."
Morgan lowered his gaze toward the picture.
"He’s a little brat who dared lay his hands on my nephew."
Her expression became colder.
"I want him to feel pain."
Morgan reached out and picked up the photograph.
The moment his eyes fell upon the face in the picture, his expression changed.
His pupils contracted.
"This..."
He stared at the image.
There was no mistaking him.
It was Kael.
The photograph appeared to have been taken from a distance, probably by someone observing Kael without his knowledge. Yet the image was clear enough that Morgan immediately recognized the young man.
It was the same person he had encountered at the Hunter Association several days ago.
The same young man who had humiliated him.
Morgan’s grip tightened around the photograph.
After returning from the Association that day, he had secretly investigated Kael’s background.
He had found almost nothing like he expected from someone who became an A-rank hunter at such a young age. There was no influential backers, no hidden connections, nothing at all.
That alone had been strange.
But what concerned him more was Kael’s strength.
Morgan had personally witnessed enough of Kael’s power to understand that provoking him wasn’t something he could do casually.
Even after wanting revenge, Morgan had been forced to restrain himself.
And now this woman wanted him to cripple Kael?
As if.
Morgan would have to worry about surviving the encounter if he went looking for trouble with that monster.
There was, however, another possibility.
If the guild captain personally intervened, the situation would be different.
Morgan believed Kael was merely a newly promoted A-rank hunter. The guild captain, on the other hand, had been an A-rank hunter for much longer and possessed far more combat experience.
If the two fought, Morgan believed the captain would eventually emerge victorious.
But that didn’t mean it was a good idea.
The captain would undoubtedly suffer injuries.
Even a victory over Kael would come at a price.
And at the current stage of the Dark Viper Guild’s development, the captain couldn’t afford to be seriously injured. Their guild was expanding rapidly, and any disruption to their strongest combatant could slow that progress.
That would be disastrous.
Morgan’s expression remained dark as he stared at Kael’s photograph.
Angela noticed his reaction.
She smiled.
"Don’t worry."
Morgan slowly raised his eyes.
"I’m not asking you to target the young man directly."
Angela’s fingers lightly tapped against the table.
"I wish I could."
There was a trace of irritation in her voice.
"But the chairman has prohibited me from touching that young."
Angela leaned back comfortably.
"But that doesn’t mean I can’t touch the people he loves."
Morgan’s gaze returned to the photograph.
A cold smile slowly appeared on Angela’s face.
"If you can’t break the man, break what he cares about."
