Chapter 38: The Noble Families

The next morning.

At the assembly at the barrack.

"At ease." Commander Aldric Vayne commanded, standing in front of his garrison members. Looking at everyone’s resolute faces, he asked. "Today is the day we will be starting the investigation of the children’s disappearance case. You all should know me by even a little. So, be bold and tell me, who doesn’t want to get involved in this case?"

No one raised their hands, all standing quietly in their position. In the hearts of many, they wanted to be exempt from this mission. However, they understood if they decided to back down now, they might be ostracized by everyone and even lose their job. So they had to bite the bullet and hope that the waves quickly subsided.

They were not from any noble families in the capital. They were just some normal people from a normal background.

Seeing no one wanting to leave, a smile flashed on Aldric’s face. He was experienced in this field more than anyone present here, so how couldn’t he understand what was going through this newbie city guard’s head? However, he didn’t care; he needed many able bodies now for this work.

"Good. Expected from my garrison members." Commander Aldric Vayne praised them and continued. "Now, I will tell you some crucial information. Most of you might have already guessed the culprits, and I also know it. However, we can’t be completely sure which family it is, as we have 7 smaller families, 3 medium families, and 1 commanding family running the Asterhold district."

"Sigh~ To be blunt with all of you, we can’t touch the medium families and the commanding family for now." Commander Aldric let out a sigh, full of exhaustion.

Then he let out a big grin on his face. "However, we can target these smaller families. From my information we can say for sure the Ravenshade and Blackthorn families have nothing to do with this. So focus on the other five for now."

Leon didn’t expect his brother-in-law to be so competent and full of passion for this case. Aldric has solved a hard early hurdle for everyone. Now they could progress forward with a clear goal in mind.

"That’s it for today. It’s your choice which family you want to target first. We will start the second phase when you have narrowed down the target." Commander Aldric dismissed everyone and left the place.

Leon’s colleague began to discuss and headed out of the barracks. Some were enthusiastic, but most were not. Earlier they thought they could slack off their progress; presently, they couldn’t.

Their commander has given them clear targets and clear intentions. They had to clash with the noble families now.

"Pooland, can you run me down the seven smaller families?" Leon asked, with his arm slumped on Pooland’s shoulders. He had learned many things from the library. Though not so much about the intricate relation inside the district.

Pooland rubbed his chin and began blurting out all the things he knew about the seven smaller families. "The smaller families are called small, but they are huge in perspective. This is the capital we are talking of, the heart of humanity. A smaller family of the capital can easily rule a certain section of land and dictate their surroundings with a commanding tone. The highest fighting force a smaller family has is Grandmaster-Rank, and they have more than one. So you could guess how strong they are."

Leon was prepared yet still became shocked. Once again showcasing that he was still a random nobody.

"Let’s start with the two smaller families the commander spoke of."

"The Ravenshade Family are the ones who control almost all the entertainment in Asterhold District. They are considered shady by many other nobles, mostly because of the crucial secretive information they hold."

"On the other hand, the Blackthorn Family is somewhat special. They are noble, but they are not under the government. They provide private protection and do any sort of thing for money. They have the smallest number of family members, but each of them is strong."

Leon rubbed his chin, with his eyebrows raised up. He could understand why Aldric was saying these two were not in the list of targets.

The Ravenshade Family was in control of entertainment facilities, having the highest and deepest connection with many people. Just as Pooland said, they absolutely held much secretive information unknown to many. Yet the culprit was still not found. So they didn’t know, or they have mastered the art of keeping information secret to its extreme limit.

One had to know, no matter how hard you keep an information, it will be leaked, and we are talking about a magical world to speak about.

We do not need the Blackthorn Family as someone who could become noble with escort and mercenary jobs; they most likely were connected to the upper echelon of the capital.

Pooland didn’t immediately continue after introducing those two families. He understood his brother was connecting the dots and finding reason for everything. He loved this, as he could now relax his mind and roam around empty-handed.

Pooland smiled and asked. "What? Still not done thinking about these two families? We still have five more to be introduced."

"It’s nothing. I am just thinking of additional flaws. You can’t announce to be exempt from suspicion." This was what Leon learned watching all those detective movies, series, and real-life incidents. What a better way of removing your crime than being out of the eyes of the detectives? Once you’re deemed innocent, you can go away with anything from then onwards.

So, Leon didn’t want to make this mistake and waste the knowledge he learned spending all that time.
