The creature knelt.

David didn’t move.

Neither did Rliqs.

For several seconds, the chamber held its breath around them.

The creature’s head remained lowered, its enormous arms resting against the stone floor. Up close, David could see that the black armor covering its body wasn’t armor at all.

It was part of it.

The material moved with each breath, shifting like layers of hardened skin.

Silver lines glowed beneath its surface.

And at the center of its chest, the symbol pulsed.

Three lines through a circle.

THUMP.

David’s chest answered.

The creature lowered its head further.

David tightened his grip on his weapon.

"Why is it kneeling?"

Rliqs didn’t answer.

"Rliqs."

"I don’t know."

David glanced at him.

"You’re getting really predictable."

"This isn’t the time."

"I noticed."

The creature suddenly raised one hand.

Rliqs immediately stepped in front of David.

"Don’t."

The creature stopped.

Its fingers remained suspended inches above the ground.

Then it slowly lowered its hand again.

No attack.

No movement.

Nothing.

David stared at it.

"It isn’t trying to hurt us."

Rliqs kept his weapon raised.

"That doesn’t mean it’s friendly."

"True."

David studied the creature.

The red eyes remained fixed on him.

Not Rliqs.

Him.

David took one careful step forward.

The creature didn’t react.

Another.

Still nothing.

Rliqs caught his shoulder.

"Don’t get closer."

David looked at the hand gripping him.

Then at the creature.

"Why?"

"Because everything down here has been waiting for someone."

David’s expression tightened.

"And you think that’s me."

"I think the evidence is becoming difficult to ignore."

David pulled free.

He took another step.

The symbol in the creature’s chest brightened.

THUMP.

His own chest burned.

David winced.

The creature suddenly lowered its head until its face was almost level with his.

Rliqs raised his weapon.

"David."

"I’m fine."

The creature opened its mouth.

No sound came out.

Instead, the silver lines beneath its skin began moving.

They traveled from its chest to its neck.

Then into its jaw.

David watched them with growing unease.

The creature’s eyes flickered.

Red.

Black.

Red.

Then a voice came from somewhere inside it.

"Bearer."

David froze.

The voice was deep enough to vibrate through the floor.

Rliqs stared.

"You can speak."

The creature ignored him.

Its eyes remained on David.

"Bearer."

David swallowed.

"Who are you?"

The creature tilted its head.

"Wrong."

David frowned.

The word echoed through the chamber.

Wrong.

Then the creature spoke again.

"Not bearer."

David’s chest tightened.

"What?"

"Door."

Rliqs went completely still.

David felt cold spread through his stomach.

"The vessel."

The creature’s head moved slightly.

"No."

David’s breathing slowed.

"What am I, then?"

The creature leaned closer.

"Opening."

THUMP.

The entire chamber shook.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Rliqs looked around.

"David, step away."

David didn’t.

He couldn’t.

The word was still echoing inside his head.

Opening.

Not vessel.

Not bearer.

Something worse.

"What happens when I open?"

The creature stared at him.

"Everything."

A crack appeared across the circular platform behind David.

Rliqs immediately grabbed him and pulled him backward.

The stone split.

Blue light erupted from beneath it.

The creature stood.

For the first time, David understood how large it really was.

Its head nearly touched the ceiling.

Rliqs stepped backward.

"Move."

David didn’t need to be told twice.

They retreated as the platform continued breaking apart.

Stone collapsed into the darkness below.

Something moved underneath.

Not a creature.

Something larger.

Something that made the entire underground chamber tremble.

David looked at Rliqs.

"What is below us?"

Rliqs’ face had gone pale.

"I don’t know."

David almost laughed.

"That’s getting old."

"I’ve never seen this happen."

The creature suddenly turned toward the broken platform.

Its red eyes narrowed.

Then it spoke.

"Too soon."

David’s expression changed.

"What’s too soon?"

The creature didn’t answer.

Instead, it stepped toward the opening.

Rliqs raised his weapon again.

The creature stopped.

Then slowly turned its head toward David.

"She calls."

David’s heart jumped.

"Sophia?"

The creature nodded.

"Where is she?"

"Below."

David immediately moved toward the opening.

Rliqs blocked him.

"No."

"She is down there."

"We don’t know what is down there."

"We know she’s alive."

"We know something used her voice to lure you here."

David stopped.

That mattered.

He looked at the creature.

"You know where she is?"

"Below."

"Is she alive?"

A pause.

"Yes."

David exhaled.

Then the chamber shook again.

This time, something screamed beneath them.

It wasn’t human.

The sound traveled through the stone and settled in David’s bones.

The creature turned toward the darkness.

Its posture changed.

It wasn’t kneeling anymore.

It was preparing.

Rliqs noticed too.

"What is that?"

The creature’s claws slowly extended.

"Prisoner."

David frowned.

"Orion?"

The creature looked at him.

"First."

David stared.

"The first bearer is still alive?"

The creature’s red eyes brightened.

"Not alive."

The temperature in the chamber dropped.

"Awake."

David felt the pulse in his chest disappear.

For one terrifying second, there was nothing.

No heartbeat.

No second rhythm.

Nothing.

Then—

THUMP.

Something answered from below.

THUMP.

David staggered.

Rliqs caught him.

"David."

Another pulse came.

THUMP.

This one didn’t come from his chest.

It came from beneath the chamber.

David looked down.

The creature lowered itself into a defensive stance.

The old symbols covering the walls changed from blue to red.

One after another.

Then every door along the corridor slammed shut.

BANG.

BANG.

BANG.

BANG.

The sound traveled into the distance.

David stared toward the staircase.

"Are we trapped?"

Rliqs shook his head.

"No."

"That sounded like trapped."

"We’re contained."

David looked at him.

"That’s worse."

"Yes."

A deep voice rolled through the chamber.

Not from the creature.

Not from the walls.

From everywhere.

"David."

His blood ran cold.

He knew that voice.

It was the voice from his visions.

The masked man.

David slowly turned.

Nothing stood behind him.

The creature suddenly dropped to one knee.

Rliqs stared.

"What are you doing?"

The creature bowed its head.

The voice came again.

"Come."

David’s chest burned.

He took one step forward.

Rliqs grabbed him.

"No."

David looked at him.

"You heard him."

"I heard something."

"It’s calling me."

"That’s exactly why you’re not going."

David pulled against his grip.

"Rliqs."

"No."

The creature suddenly raised its head.

Its eyes locked onto Rliqs.

For the first time, its expression changed.

Something resembling anger appeared across its face.

The silver markings beneath its skin flared.

Rliqs tightened his grip on David.

"Don’t."

The creature spoke.

"Release."

Rliqs didn’t move.

"He’s not yours."

The creature’s claws scraped against the stone.

"Release."

David looked between them.

"You two know each other?"

Neither answered.

David narrowed his eyes.

"That’s interesting."

The creature rose.

Rliqs immediately shoved David behind him.

"Stay back."

David glanced around him.

There was nowhere to go.

The doors were sealed.

The staircase behind them had collapsed.

The creature blocked the only remaining path.

And beneath their feet, something was waking up.

Perfect.

David sighed.

"Can we save the mysterious history lesson for after we survive?"

Rliqs looked back.

"Stay behind me."

"You know I’m not going to do that."

"I was hoping you’d surprise me."

David almost smiled.

Then the floor split.

A black hand burst through the stone.

Rliqs shoved David aside.

The creature lunged.

Its claws collided with the hand.

The impact exploded through the chamber.

Stone pillars cracked.

David hit the ground and rolled.

He looked up.

The creature was wrestling with something beneath the platform.

Something he couldn’t see.

Only its arm was visible.

It was enormous.

Black skin.

Long fingers.

Silver markings.

And around its wrist was a familiar symbol.

Three lines through a circle.

David slowly stood.

The creature holding it back roared.

The thing below roared louder.

Then the hand suddenly disappeared beneath the floor.

Silence returned.

David stared at the broken platform.

"What just happened?"

Rliqs was breathing heavily.

"I don’t know."

David looked at him.

"You genuinely don’t."

"No."

The creature turned toward David.

Its chest symbol had gone dark.

"Run."

David blinked.

"What?"

The creature pointed toward the corridor.

"Now."

Rliqs didn’t hesitate.

He grabbed David’s arm.

They ran.

The corridor seemed different now.

The sealed doors trembled as they passed.

Some whispered.

Others scratched from the inside.

David refused to look.

He didn’t need another problem.

Behind them, something struck the chamber wall.

BOOM.

The floor shook.

David stumbled.

Rliqs caught him.

"Keep moving."

"I’m trying."

Another impact.

This one was closer.

They reached the staircase.

Rliqs stopped.

The path upward was blocked by fallen stone.

David stared.

"That’s unfortunate."

Rliqs turned.

The creature stood at the far end of the corridor.

It wasn’t following them.

It was holding something back.

Black veins had appeared across its body.

It looked like the thing inside it was tearing through its skin.

David looked at it.

"Why is it helping us?"

Rliqs’ expression hardened.

"Maybe it isn’t."

David looked toward the creature.

It raised one hand.

Pointed at the wall beside them.

David frowned.

"There?"

The creature nodded.

Rliqs rushed toward the wall and examined it.

"There."

A faint outline appeared beneath the stone.

A hidden door.

Rliqs struck it with the butt of his weapon.

Once.

Twice.

The stone cracked.

David helped.

Together, they forced the door open.

A narrow passage waited beyond.

David looked back one last time.

The creature was still holding the corridor.

Its knees were beginning to shake.

David met its red eyes.

"Thank you."

The creature stared at him.

Then it spoke one final word.

"Remember."

David frowned.

"Remember what?"

The creature’s expression changed.

Almost like a smile.

"Orion."

Then something behind it screamed.

The creature turned.

David stepped through the hidden doorway.

Rliqs followed.

The moment they crossed the threshold, the door slammed shut.

David leaned against the wall.

His breathing was ragged.

Rliqs looked at him.

"Keep moving."

David closed his eyes.

Then he heard it.

A faint voice.

Right beside his ear.

"David."

He opened his eyes.

No one was there.

But his chest began pulsing again.

THUMP.

THUMP.

THUMP.

And beneath the stone floor, something answered.

THUMP.

David stared into the darkness ahead.

Whatever was waiting below the prison had heard him.

And now—

It was coming.
