David didn’t move.

Neither did the man.

For several seconds, the enormous chamber seemed to hold its breath with them.

Then David looked around.

The pillars.

The markings.

The throne.

The chains.

All of it suddenly felt less like a prison and more like a warning.

He tightened his grip on his weapon.

"You."

The man’s silver eyes remained fixed on him.

"Me."

David pointed toward the throne.

"You were sealed here?"

"Yes."

"By whom?"

The man smiled faintly.

"Your ancestors."

David’s expression tightened.

"My ancestors?"

"Your bloodline."

Rliqs stepped forward.

"Don’t listen to him."

The man’s eyes shifted.

"You still haven’t changed."

Rliqs’ grip tightened around his weapon.

"You shouldn’t be awake."

"And yet here I am."

David glanced between them.

"Okay."

Neither reacted.

David raised his voice.

"Can someone explain why everyone keeps talking like they’ve known each other for centuries?"

The man looked at him again.

"Because some of us have."

David stared.

"You know Rliqs?"

"I know what he was."

Rliqs’ expression hardened.

"Don’t."

The man smiled.

"Still afraid he’ll remember?"

David’s eyes narrowed.

"Remember what?"

Rliqs turned toward him.

"David, we need to leave."

"That’s not an answer."

"It’s the only answer you’re getting."

"Then I’m staying."

Rliqs stared at him.

David shrugged.

"Apparently, every person in this place knows something about me except me."

The man chuckled.

"That is the curse of your blood."

David looked at him.

"What blood?"

The man’s gaze dropped to David’s chest.

"The blood that opened the door."

David instinctively touched his chest.

The blue glow beneath his shirt pulsed.

THUMP.

The man’s smile disappeared.

"Interesting."

David frowned.

"What?"

"You opened the second seal."

Rliqs’ head snapped toward him.

"What did you say?"

The man looked at Rliqs.

"You didn’t know?"

Rliqs went silent.

David noticed.

"Apparently not."

The silver-eyed man stepped away from the throne.

Chains dragged across the stone behind him.

"You were never supposed to come this far."

David raised his weapon.

"And yet here I am."

"That wasn’t supposed to happen either."

"Story of my life."

The man stopped.

For the first time, something resembling amusement crossed his face.

"You still make jokes."

David frowned.

"Do I know you?"

"No."

The answer came quietly.

"But you knew me once."

David’s grip tightened.

"That doesn’t make sense."

"It will."

The man lifted one hand.

Every silver marking in the chamber brightened.

Sophia stepped closer to David.

"What are those?"

"The seals."

Rliqs answered.

Sophia looked at him.

"All of them?"

"No."

He looked around the chamber.

"These are only the outer restraints."

David’s stomach tightened.

"Outer?"

The man smiled.

"There are seven."

David looked at the floor.

"Seven what?"

"Seals."

The word echoed through the chamber.

Rliqs looked toward the throne.

"Then why is the second one opening?"

The man looked at David.

"Because he is here."

David pointed at himself.

"Me again."

"The first seal recognized your blood."

David’s expression changed.

"And the second?"

"The second recognized your soul."

Silence.

Sophia stared at David.

"What does that mean?"

The man walked closer.

"It means the prison no longer recognizes him as an intruder."

David’s eyes narrowed.

"What does it recognize me as?"

The man stopped several meters away.

"The one who belongs inside."

David’s expression hardened.

"That sounds terrible."

"It is."

The chamber trembled.

A low vibration rolled beneath their feet.

Sophia grabbed David’s arm.

"What was that?"

The man looked toward the floor.

"The seal is weakening."

Rliqs immediately moved toward David.

"We’re leaving."

David didn’t move.

"How?"

Rliqs pointed behind them.

"The door."

David looked.

The circular door was still there.

But the symbol carved across it had changed.

The three lines were glowing silver.

Rliqs approached it.

He pressed his palm against the stone.

Nothing.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

David raised an eyebrow.

"Need help?"

Rliqs ignored him.

The man laughed.

"It won’t open for him."

Rliqs turned.

"Why?"

"Because it was never meant to."

David looked at the door.

"Then who was it meant for?"

The man’s eyes met his.

"You."

David sighed.

"Of course."

He walked toward the door.

Rliqs grabbed his shoulder.

"No."

David looked down at his hand.

"Move."

"You don’t know what opening that door will do."

"I know what staying here will do."

The chamber shook again.

A crack appeared in one of the pillars.

Stone fell.

Rliqs released him.

David placed his palm against the symbol.

Nothing happened.

He waited.

Then—

THUMP.

The blue glow beneath his skin spread into his palm.

The symbol turned blue.

The door opened.

Cold air rushed through the chamber.

Sophia stared.

"You really are the only one who can open these."

David stepped back.

"Apparently."

Rliqs looked at the man.

"What did you do?"

The man smiled.

"Nothing."

"Then why is he able to open the seals?"

"Because he isn’t opening them."

Rliqs’ expression changed.

"What?"

The man looked at David.

"They’re opening themselves."

David’s blood ran cold.

The second seal pulsed beneath his feet.

[Second Seal: 37%.]

David froze.

The message appeared only for him.

The man watched his expression.

"You can see them now."

David looked at him.

"See what?"

"The messages."

Rliqs turned toward him.

"What messages?"

David hesitated.

The man smiled.

"Tell them."

David shook his head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I don’t know what they mean."

"Neither do they."

David’s eyes narrowed.

"Who are you?"

The man stood completely still.

Then he answered.

"My name was Kael."

Rliqs’ face changed.

Sophia noticed.

"You know that name."

Rliqs didn’t answer.

David looked at him.

"Rliqs."

His jaw tightened.

"Kael was the first guardian of the royal bloodline."

David looked back at the man.

"The first?"

"Before your family ruled Eldoria," Kael said, "there was another kingdom."

"What happened to it?"

Kael’s eyes darkened.

"Your family destroyed it."

Sophia stepped forward.

"Why?"

Kael looked at her.

"Because they wanted what was beneath it."

David frowned.

"The thing beneath the ruins."

Kael nodded.

"They called it a blessing."

"And you?"

"I called it a hunger."

The chamber went silent.

David glanced toward the throne.

"So they sealed you because you tried to stop them?"

Kael smiled.

"No."

He looked at David.

"They sealed me because I succeeded."

Rliqs’ expression tightened.

"What did you do?"

"I killed the king."

David froze.

Sophia’s eyes widened.

Rliqs didn’t move.

Kael continued.

"The first king of Eldoria wasn’t the man history remembers."

David’s grip tightened around his weapon.

"What was he?"

Kael’s silver eyes became colder.

"Possessed."

A deep vibration rolled through the chamber.

Kael turned toward the throne.

"He discovered the thing beneath the kingdom."

The silver markings began flickering.

"He believed it could make him immortal."

David swallowed.

"Did it?"

Kael laughed softly.

"No."

He looked back at David.

"It made him something worse."

The chamber shook.

A crack split across the floor.

Sophia stumbled.

David caught her.

"What is happening?"

Kael’s expression became serious.

"The second seal is opening faster."

David looked at the invisible message.

[Second Seal: 42%.]

[43%.]

[44%.]

"Can we stop it?"

Kael looked at him.

"Yes."

David waited.

Kael smiled.

"You."

David sighed.

"I knew you were going to say that."

"You must close the seal."

"How?"

"You must return what your blood took."

David frowned.

"My blood didn’t take anything."

Kael stepped closer.

"Your bloodline did."

David’s expression hardened.

"Then tell me what it took."

Kael stopped directly in front of him.

"The Crown."

David stared.

"What crown?"

Kael touched two fingers against David’s chest.

The moment he did—

THUMP.

David’s entire body locked.

A flood of images tore through his mind.

A burning city.

People screaming.

A massive black creature standing beneath a red sky.

A young man kneeling before a throne.

A crown floating above his head.

Then—

a woman.

David couldn’t see her face.

She was holding a baby.

His baby.

She ran through a burning corridor.

Behind her came soldiers.

One of them shouted.

"Take the child!"

The woman turned.

Her eyes were filled with terror.

Then she pressed the baby against her chest.

"Never."

The vision shattered.

David stumbled backward.

Sophia caught him.

"David!"

He breathed heavily.

His hands were shaking.

"What..."

Kael watched him.

"You saw it."

David looked up.

"The woman."

Kael’s expression softened.

"Your mother."

David’s chest tightened.

"What happened to her?"

Kael didn’t answer.

David stepped toward him.

"What happened to my mother?"

Kael looked away.

"She escaped."

David’s eyes narrowed.

"That’s not what I asked."

"She escaped with you."

"And?"

Kael remained silent.

David’s voice hardened.

"And?"

Kael finally looked at him.

"She never made it out of Eldoria."

Everything inside David went still.

Sophia’s hand tightened around his arm.

Rliqs lowered his weapon.

David stared at Kael.

"You’re lying."

"I’m not."

"She survived."

"Yes."

"Then where is she?"

Kael’s eyes shifted toward the floor.

"Below us."

David’s breath caught.

The chamber trembled violently.

The second seal surged.

[Second Seal: 61%.]

David looked down.

"No."

Kael stepped back.

"She is the reason it is awakening."

"What does that mean?"

"She is still alive."

David’s heart slammed against his ribs.

"Where?"

Kael pointed toward the throne.

"Below it."

The black stone beneath the throne split apart.

A staircase appeared.

It descended into darkness.

Cold air rose from below.

And from somewhere deep underneath—

a woman’s voice whispered.

"David."

He froze.

Sophia stared at him.

"Was that—"

"My mother."

The voice came again.

Soft.

Weak.

But unmistakably human.

"David..."

Kael looked toward the staircase.

"The second seal isn’t protecting the kingdom."

David stared into the darkness.

"What is it protecting?"

Kael’s silver eyes met his.

"Her."

David took one step toward the stairs.

Rliqs immediately moved in front of him.

"Wait."

David looked at him.

"Move."

"You don’t understand what you’re walking into."

David’s voice was quiet.

"Neither do you."

Rliqs said nothing.

David stepped around him.

The second seal continued climbing.

[Second Seal: 67%.]

Then—

[68%.]

The voice below whispered again.

"Please..."

David’s weapon lowered slightly.

For the first time since entering the ruins, he wasn’t thinking about the king.

He wasn’t thinking about the seals.

He wasn’t thinking about whatever waited beneath Eldoria.

He was thinking about one thing.

His mother was alive.

And she had been waiting beneath the kingdom all this time.

David stepped onto the first stair.

Behind him, Kael spoke.

"If you go down there, the second seal will break."

David stopped.

"Then I guess we’re about to find out what’s behind it."

He continued downward.

Sophia followed.

Rliqs hesitated for only a moment before following them.

Kael remained above.

His silver eyes watched the three disappear into the darkness.

Then he looked toward the glowing markings.

[Second Seal: 71%.]

Kael’s expression changed.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared in his eyes.

"Too soon."

Deep beneath the throne, something opened its eyes.

And the voice that came from the darkness was no longer human.

"Finally."

The second seal reached—
