The deeper they went, the quieter the building became.

David noticed it almost immediately.

The main halls had been busy.

People moving everywhere.

Hunters carrying weapons.

Screens displaying information.

Training rooms filled with noise.

But after Jenna turned down another corridor, most of that disappeared.

The number of people gradually decreased.

The walls became cleaner.

The doors became heavier.

Even the lighting seemed different.

David glanced at one of the doors as they passed.

There was no handle.

No visible keypad.

Just a silver panel beside it.

’Definitely not a normal office.’

Jenna continued walking without slowing down.

Nicole followed beside her.

Lion remained behind them.

David looked over his shoulder.

The large man hadn’t said much since they arrived.

That was starting to bother him.

Not because Lion seemed hostile.

Quite the opposite.

He seemed almost too calm.

As if bringing a stranger with a mysterious ability into a secret organization was completely normal.

David looked forward again.

’Maybe it is.’

After everything he’d seen today, he wasn’t willing to rule that out anymore.

They finally stopped in front of a large door.

Jenna placed her hand against the panel.

A soft tone sounded.

The door unlocked.

She looked at David.

"Ready?"

David stared at the door.

"No."

Jenna nodded.

"Good."

She opened it.

David gave her a look.

"That wasn’t a real question, was it?"

"No."

"Thought so."

Nicole laughed quietly.

David stepped inside.

The room was larger than he expected.

There was a long table in the center.

Several monitors covered one wall.

Another wall was made entirely of glass.

Behind it was a separate room containing several pieces of equipment David couldn’t identify.

At first glance, it looked like a laboratory.

Then he noticed the reinforced walls.

The thick glass.

The strange metallic flooring.

And the fact that there were absolutely no windows.

’Laboratory.’

He corrected himself.

’With a very obvious backup plan for when something goes wrong.’

A woman was already waiting inside.

She looked to be in her early thirties.

Dark hair.

Glasses.

White coat over a black uniform.

She was reading something on a tablet.

She didn’t look up when they entered.

"You’re late."

Jenna frowned.

"We’re three minutes early."

"You’re late according to my schedule."

"That’s not how time works."

The woman finally looked up.

Her eyes moved toward Jenna.

Then Nicole.

Then Lion.

Finally, they settled on David.

Her expression changed.

Not dramatically.

Just slightly.

David caught it.

Again.

The same reaction he’d seen from the guard outside.

His eyes narrowed.

’Why does everyone keep looking at me like that?’

The woman put the tablet down.

"So this is him."

Jenna nodded.

"David."

The woman continued looking at him.

"Age?"

"Twenty-one."

"Awakened?"

David hesitated.

"I don’t know."

She glanced at Jenna.

Jenna nodded.

"He claims he isn’t."

"Claims?"

David raised an eyebrow.

"I didn’t exactly have a choice in coming here."

The woman looked back at him.

"Fair."

She stood.

"My name is Dr. Elaine Carter."

David waited.

Nothing happened.

He looked at her.

She looked at him.

Then he realized she was waiting for him to respond.

"David."

"I know."

"Right."

He nodded.

"Good start."

Nicole covered a smile.

Elaine ignored her.

"Take a seat."

David sat in the chair opposite her.

Jenna and Nicole remained standing.

Lion moved toward the wall.

David looked around.

"So what’s the test?"

Elaine picked up her tablet.

"Several tests."

"How many?"

"Depends."

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"Then you should stop asking questions with conditional answers."

David stared at her.

Then nodded slowly.

"You’re going to fit in perfectly here."

Elaine’s lips twitched.

It wasn’t quite a smile.

But it was close.

She tapped the screen.

A small machine on the other side of the glass suddenly activated.

David’s eyes moved toward it.

The machine looked like a circular platform surrounded by metal arms.

"What is that?"

"An awakening scanner."

David looked at Jenna.

She nodded.

"It’s harmless."

"That’s usually what people say before something becomes very harmful."

Nicole snorted.

Elaine looked at David.

"Do you have a reason to believe it will hurt you?"

"No."

"Then stop worrying."

David sighed.

’Easy for her to say.’

Elaine walked toward the door separating the two rooms.

"You’ll stand on the platform."

David stood.

He walked into the testing room.

The moment he stepped onto the platform, the system appeared.

[Unknown Energy Detected.]

David froze.

The notification remained in front of his eyes.

Unlike before, it didn’t disappear immediately.

His heart beat faster.

’Again.’

He looked around.

Nobody reacted.

Elaine was adjusting something on the console.

Jenna was watching through the glass.

Nicole was beside her.

None of them could see the notification.

David slowly looked down at his hands.

Nothing.

No glow.

No strange sensation.

Just his hands.

’What exactly are you detecting?’

The machine activated.

A faint hum filled the room.

Then several rings of light appeared around him.

David felt something move through his body.

It wasn’t painful.

It was cold.

Then warm.

Then neither.

The sensation disappeared.

Elaine stared at the monitor.

Her fingers stopped moving.

Jenna noticed.

"What?"

Elaine didn’t answer.

She tapped the screen.

The machine hummed again.

A second scan began.

David waited.

Nothing happened.

Then—

The lights flickered.

The machine shut down.

Silence filled the room.

David slowly looked toward the glass.

Elaine was staring at the monitor.

Jenna looked at her.

"What happened?"

Elaine didn’t respond.

"Elaine."

The woman finally looked up.

"The scanner failed."

David stepped off the platform.

"Failed?"

"It shut itself down."

"Why?"

"I don’t know."

David stared at her.

"That’s comforting."

Elaine ignored the sarcasm.

"Do it again."

Jenna frowned.

"You just said it failed."

"I know."

"Then why—"

"Because I want to know whether it failed because of him or because of the equipment."

David raised his hand.

"Small problem."

Everyone looked at him.

"I don’t really want to stand on the machine that just broke."

Elaine considered that.

"Reasonable."

She picked up her tablet.

"We’ll move to the second test."

David stared at her.

"There’s a second one?"

"Yes."

"And if that breaks?"

"We have a third."

"And if that breaks?"

Elaine paused.

"We stop."

David nodded.

"Good."

’At least she has limits.’

They left the room.

Elaine walked toward another section of the facility.

David followed with Jenna and Nicole behind him.

"That was weird," Nicole said.

David looked at her.

"What?"

"The scanner."

"Yeah."

"Did you feel anything?"

David thought about it.

"Cold."

Nicole nodded.

"That’s all?"

"That’s all."

She seemed disappointed.

David looked at Jenna.

"You know what happened?"

Jenna shook her head.

"No."

"You’re lying."

She looked at him.

"I genuinely don’t know."

David studied her face.

She didn’t look like she was hiding anything.

At least not this time.

"Fine."

Elaine stopped at another door.

This one was much smaller.

She opened it.

Inside was a plain room with a chair in the middle.

Nothing else.

David looked around.

"This one looks less likely to explode."

"That’s the idea."

Elaine gestured toward the chair.

"Sit."

David sat.

She placed a small device against his temple.

David immediately stiffened.

"What is that?"

"A neural resonance reader."

"That sounds worse."

"It isn’t."

"You’re using that phrase again."

Nicole laughed.

Elaine ignored her.

The device activated.

A soft vibration traveled through David’s head.

His vision blurred.

For a moment, the room disappeared.

Then something appeared in front of him.

A notification.

[Scanning...]

David’s eyes widened.

The system had reacted again.

The letters remained suspended before him.

[External Analysis Detected.]

[Protective Measures Engaged.]

David’s breathing stopped.

’Protective measures?’

The screen vanished.

His vision returned to normal.

Elaine immediately removed the device.

She stared at the machine.

Then at David.

"What did you do?"

David blinked.

"Nothing."

"Something happened."

"I didn’t do anything."

Elaine checked the device.

Her expression became increasingly confused.

Jenna stepped closer.

"What did you see?"

Elaine shook her head.

"The reader couldn’t penetrate."

"Couldn’t penetrate what?"

"His cognitive field."

David frowned.

"Meaning?"

Elaine looked directly at him.

"Your brain rejected the scan."

David stared.

"My brain?"

"That’s the simplest explanation."

"Is there a complicated one?"

"Yes."

David waited.

Elaine didn’t elaborate.

He sighed.

"Of course."

Jenna crossed her arms.

"So what does that tell us?"

Elaine looked at David again.

"That he’s not normal."

David raised an eyebrow.

"I was hoping we’d established that already."

Nicole laughed.

Even Jenna smiled faintly.

Elaine didn’t.

"David."

Something in her voice changed.

He looked at her.

"I need you to answer something honestly."

"Okay."

"Have you ever awakened before?"

"No."

"Have you ever experienced unusual abilities?"

David hesitated.

He thought about the dungeon.

The system.

The strange notifications.

The moments where impossible things had happened around him.

He couldn’t tell them everything.

Not yet.

"Yes."

Jenna’s eyes sharpened.

"What kind?"

David looked at her.

"Something like enhanced reflexes."

Elaine’s expression remained neutral.

"When did you first notice it?"

"Recently."

"How recently?"

"A few days ago."

"Can you control it?"

"Sometimes."

That wasn’t entirely a lie.

Elaine stared at him for several seconds.

Then she nodded.

"All right."

She turned toward the door.

"There’s one final test."

David stood.

"Finally."

They walked farther down the corridor.

This section was different.

The walls were reinforced with thick metal.

A red line had been painted across the floor.

Elaine stopped before it.

"Beyond this point is a controlled combat chamber."

David looked through the glass.

The room beyond was enormous.

Unlike the previous rooms, there was nothing inside it.

Just an empty floor.

"What’s the test?"

Elaine looked at him.

"You."

David blinked.

"Me?"

"Yes."

She pointed toward the room.

"We want to see what your body does under pressure."

David frowned.

"You want me to fight someone?"

"No."

"Good."

"We’ll use a training construct."

David stared at her.

"What’s a training construct?"

A metallic shape rose from the floor.

It looked vaguely human.

David watched it unfold.

Its arms extended.

Its head rotated.

Two red lights appeared where its eyes should have been.

David slowly stepped backward.

"That."

Elaine nodded.

"That."

"You’re serious."

"Very."

David looked at Jenna.

She gave him an encouraging nod.

"You’ll be fine."

"That’s what you said about the scanner."

"The scanner didn’t hurt you."

"It broke."

"Details."

David sighed.

’I’m surrounded by lunatics.’

He stepped across the red line.

The door closed behind him.

The training construct moved.

David’s body reacted before he could think.

He ducked.

A metal fist passed over his head.

His eyes widened.

The construct turned.

David jumped backward.

It attacked again.

He twisted sideways.

The strike missed.

Again.

And again.

David kept moving.

Something inside him felt different.

Sharper.

The world seemed slower.

Not much.

Just enough.

He could see the machine’s movements before they happened.

He dodged another strike.

Then another.

The construct suddenly stopped.

David stopped too.

Silence.

He looked at it.

The machine’s red eyes flickered.

Then it moved faster.

David’s expression changed.

’Oh.’

The first attack came.

He barely avoided it.

The second came immediately after.

He ducked.

The third—

David moved without thinking.

His fist slammed into the construct’s chest.

The machine flew backward.

It crashed into the wall.

David froze.

He stared at his fist.

Then at the machine.

The system appeared.

[Combat Response Confirmed.]

[Physical Adaptation: Active.]

David’s eyes widened.

’Physical adaptation?’

The construct slowly stood.

A warning alarm sounded.

Outside the room, Elaine’s expression had completely changed.

She looked at the readings.

Then at Jenna.

"That’s impossible."

Jenna stared through the glass.

"What?"

Elaine pointed at the screen.

"His energy output just increased."

Lion finally moved from the wall.

"By how much?"

Elaine didn’t answer immediately.

Then she whispered,

"Three hundred percent."

David couldn’t hear her.

He was too busy staring at the machine.

The construct raised its arms again.

David slowly smiled.

Not because he wanted to fight.

Not because he suddenly felt invincible.

But because, for the first time since this strange world had entered his life, he had confirmation of something.

The system wasn’t simply giving him abilities.

It was responding to something.

Learning something.

Maybe even protecting something.

The construct charged.

David raised his fists.

The system flickered once more.

[Unknown Energy Detected.]

This time, another line appeared beneath it.

[Source: Host.]

David’s smile disappeared.

’Host?’

The construct stopped inches from him.

Its body suddenly shut down.

The entire room went silent.

David stared at the notification.

Then at his hands.

For the first time, he wasn’t wondering whether the system had a reason for choosing him.

He was wondering something much more important.

’What exactly is inside me?’
