The combat instructor flipped through his heavy ledger, his rod tapping rhythmically against his leather-bound records. His eyes scanned the elite rows before shifting toward a broad-shouldered youth.

"Marcus," the instructor barked. "Grade A, Combat talent: Volcanic Forge. Step out. Let’s see how our latecomer handles a real offensive combatant."

"With pleasure, Instructor," Marcus drawled.

He stepped onto the black sand, a massive, arrogant youth with short-cropped blond hair and a smug sneer. Unlike the lesser-bloods who carried standard training blades, Marcus didn’t bother reaching for the wooden weapon racks. He simply cracked his knuckles, rolling his neck as he looked down at Thomas with absolute malice. To an elite High-blood, being paired against a lesse-blood utility type was a public gift, a free chance to put a commoner back in his place.

Thomas kept his expression smooth as glass, but beneath his calm exterior, his heart was hammering against his ribs. He was a farm boy. He had spent his fifteen years of life digging trenches, pulling weeds, and hauling crops. He had never held a sword, never stood in a martial stance, and never faced a person who genuinely wanted to hurt him

He walked over to the wooden training weapon racks lining the coliseum wall, his hands shaking slightly. He needed an advantage, and he needed it now.

Eye of Khepri, activate, Thomas commanded mentally.

A sudden, chilling sensation flooded his right eye. Behind the system’s hidden shroud, the crimson rune etched beneath his flesh hummed to life. To the rest of the class, Thomas was just a terrified boy picking out a weapon. But to Thomas, the entire world transformed.

The structural wood of the training weapons became entirely translucent. He could suddenly perceive hidden, pulsing veins of mana running through the arena floor, but more importantly, he could see the weapons themselves. Most of the practice blades were hollow and fragile, worn down by years of rough training. But all the way at the bottom of the rack, his right eye locked onto a simple wooden shortsword. Flowing through its grain was a dense, tightly wound structural mana circuit. It was the sturdiest, most perfectly balanced blade on the rack.

Thomas reached down, pulled the shortsword free, and turned around to face the black sand.

"A shortsword?" Marcus mocked, raising his hands as his mana began to spike violently. "A tiny blade for a tiny talent. Let’s see how long you can analyze me before I crush you into kindling."

Thomas didn’t answer. He stepped onto the sand, holding the blade awkwardly, his knuckles white around the hilt. He didn’t know a proper guard; he just held the weapon in front of his chest like a shield, his feet placed poorly on the shifting ground.

"Begin!" the instructor shouted.

The moment the command left the proctor’s lips, Marcus didn’t just summon fire—he transformed. His Grade A Volcanic Forge talent was a highly versatile combat suite. First, his right arm erupted into a terrifying, blazing crimson glow, his skin hardening into a heavy, molten volcanic rock that sizzled and dripped with pure heat.

But he wasn’t done. Marcus slammed his foot into the ground, activating his secondary ability, Magma Surge. The black sand beneath his boots instantly liquefied into bubbling, boiling orange sludge. With a brutal kick of his leg, Marcus launched a spray of boiling mud directly at Thomas’s face, using the environment to blind his opponent.

Thomas panicked. His farm-boy instincts failed him. Instead of dodging or shielding his face with his sleeve, he froze, his eyes widening in shock as the boiling magma sprayed across his left shoulder and chest.

Sizzle!

The searing heat burned right through his academy uniform, melting the fabric and scorching his flesh. Thomas cried out, stumbling backward in a completely clumsy retreat. His foot caught on a ridge of sand, and he lost his balance, his arms flailing wildly as he desperately threw up his shortsword to ward off whatever was coming next.

Marcus didn’t give him room to breathe. Utilizing the final aspect of his talent, Obsidian Propulsion, the noble boy released a sudden blast of pressurized volcanic gas from the soles of his boots. The explosive burst of speed shot him across the arena like a cannonball. He closed the distance in a fraction of a second, his heavy, rock-encrusted fist swinging in a brutal, horizontal arc aimed straight for Thomas’s ribs.

Thomas tried to parry, but his form was non-existent. He merely jammed the flat of his wooden shortsword against Marcus’s incoming fist.

CRACK!

The collision was devastating. The dense mana circuits inside Thomas’s chosen shortsword kept the wood from instantly splintering, but the sheer, overwhelming physical weight and blistering heat of Marcus’s volcanic fist blasted right through his clumsy guard. The explosive impact sent a shockwave of kinetic energy tearing directly through Thomas’s arms and straight into his torso.

Thomas was violently thrown backward, rolling across the black sand in a bruised, tangled mess. His skin blistered under the intense heat, his left shoulder was badly burned, and his rib cage throbbed with a sharp, agonizing pain where his muscles had torn from the impact. He fell to his knees, coughing violently, gasping for air as the High-blood students in the front rows began to laugh and cheer.

But inside Thomas’s mind, the mocking laughter of the nobility was instantly drowned out by a cold, majestic chime.

[ EVOLUTION COMPLETE: HOST BODY HAS PERMANENTLY ADAPTED ]

Thomas froze on his knees, his hands digging into the black sand.

The agonizing, burning pain in his body didn’t just fade—it vanished completely. He could literally feel his muscles stitching themselves back together beneath his scorched uniform, tightening, hardening, and becoming denser than they had ever been in his entire life. The raw, weeping burns on his shoulder cooled rapidly, the flesh transforming into a tough, slightly calloused, heat-resistant layer that felt completely immune to the ambient waves of heat radiating across the arena.

What should have been a debilitating, bone-crushing injury had just been processed, digested, and turned into permanent, unbreakable strength.

"Is that all the lesser-blood Ace has got?" Marcus laughed, stepping forward as his molten arm glowed even brighter, prepping a final, finishing blow. "Get up, trash. I’m not done teaching you your place."

Thomas slowly rose to his feet, wiping a trace of black sand from his mouth. His stance was still unrefined, but his body felt incredibly light, completely adapted to the heavy gravity of the combat room. He looked at Marcus, and then his eyes subtly flicked toward the rows where Julian sat. Julian wasn’t laughing. He was leaning forward, his striking ebony eyes narrowing into a razor-sharp glare as he stared at Thomas, his instincts clearly screaming that something entirely unnatural had just occurred on the arena floor.

Thomas gripped his shortsword, his knuckles settling into a firmer, more confident grip as he stared down Marcus’s glowing fist.
