The three hunters stood frozen beneath the weight of Jackson’s gaze.
For a brief moment, the forest seemed to fall completely silent. The tension was so thick that even the rustling leaves sounded distant, and none of the three hunters dared to breathe too loudly.
Jackson simply stood there, his expression calm and unreadable.
"You... how dare you steal our kill!"
The hunter with the slender build was the first to break.
He had been the most excited when they discovered the monster, and the anger boiling inside him had already been pushing against the fear he felt toward Jackson. Now, that anger finally overcame his caution.
He glared at Jackson with undisguised hostility.
Jackson remained expressionless.
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he quietly studied the three hunters while a plan slowly formed in his mind.
Although he was currently outnumbered, the situation wasn’t impossible.
After surviving a hundred battles in the arena, Jackson’s confidence in fighting opponents within the same realm had grown tremendously. He had faced countless different fighting styles and experienced battles where a single mistake meant death.
These three might have the advantage in numbers, but numbers alone weren’t enough to make him retreat.
If they had been at the Second Sequence, however, the situation would have been completely different.
Forget confronting them.
Jackson wouldn’t have even bothered revealing himself.
But these three were still within the First Sequence.
As long as he fought carefully, he was confident he could handle them.
Therefore, when he felt the hostility radiating from the slender-built hunter, Jackson quietly prepared himself.
His muscles tensed almost imperceptibly.
If the man made a move, Jackson would retaliate without hesitation.
Yet before either side could act, something completely unexpected happened.
The leader finally reacted.
The terror that had frozen him in place moments earlier seemed to vanish in an instant.
His figure blurred.
Before Jackson could even blink, the leader had already appeared directly in front of the slender-built hunter.
Then...
Pa!
A crisp sound echoed through the forest.
The leader had slapped him.
The force behind the slap was clearly not small. The slender-built hunter’s body staggered sideways, his face turning red as he stared at his leader in complete disbelief.
The sharp sound of flesh striking flesh echoed through the grim silence of the forest.
It sounded almost like thunder.
Even Jackson was caught slightly off guard.
He had been prepared for a fight.
Instead, he had witnessed his potential opponent’s leader slap his own subordinate.
Jackson looked at the scene before him with a peculiar gaze.
For the first time, even he couldn’t quite understand what was happening.
Seeing that Jackson’s expression remained completely indifferent, the leader’s heart tightened.
He immediately turned his anger toward his own companion.
Pa!
Another loud slap landed across the slender hunter’s face.
"Open your dog eyes! Can’t you see that this mighty senior just saved our lives?"
The leader’s voice was filled with righteous fury as though his companion had committed some unforgivable crime.
"If it weren’t for his intervention, that spider would have ranked up!"
Pa!
Another slap.
"Instead of being grateful, you actually dare accuse him of stealing our kill?"
The leader’s face flushed with anger.
"If I don’t teach you a lesson today, my heart won’t be at peace!"
As he spoke, his hand continued moving.
Pa! Pa! Pa!
The poor hunter could only endure the blows.
At first, he had stared at his leader with complete confusion.
He couldn’t understand why his own leader was suddenly beating him.
But after the second slap, something finally seemed to get knocked into place inside his head.
He understood.
Without a doubt, Jackson had stolen their kill.
But that wasn’t the important part.
The important part was the strength Jackson had displayed.
The spider they had been fighting was already a peak Rank One corrupted monster and was on the verge of advancing to the Second Sequence.
Yet Jackson had appeared out of nowhere and killed it instantly.
Someone capable of doing that was undoubtedly a powerful hunter.
Perhaps even a Second Sequence expert.
The slender hunter’s thoughts reached that point, and a chill immediately ran down his spine.
I actually offended someone like that?
If Jackson truly was a Second Sequence expert, then his earlier accusation could easily bring disaster upon them.
The more he thought about it, the more frightened he became.
Without wasting another second, he hurriedly shook his head.
"It was a misunderstanding!"
His voice came out hurriedly as he apologized.
"I didn’t mean anything by it. Senior, please forgive me!"
The leader finally released an inward sigh of relief.
At least this idiot had finally understood.
How could Jackson possibly fail to understand what was happening?
The three hunters had clearly misunderstood the situation.
When Jackson had suddenly appeared and instantly killed the spider, they had naturally assumed that he was a Second Sequence expert.
Jackson himself wasn’t a saint.
Since they had already misunderstood his strength, he had no intention of correcting them.
Why bother explaining when their misunderstanding could save him trouble?
Instead, Jackson calmly shifted his gaze toward the two marbles lying on the ground.
He raised his hand and pointed toward them.
The meaning was obvious.
If you’ve finished apologizing, let’s talk about my reward...
At once, the leader moved.
He hurriedly picked up both marbles from the ground and respectfully handed them to Jackson. Before doing so, he even wiped away the dirt covering their surfaces, as though presenting them to some important senior.
Jackson accepted the two items and examined them briefly before nodding with satisfaction.
"Good."
The simple word immediately caused the leader’s tense heart to relax slightly.
Jackson looked at the three hunters with a rare trace of approval in his eyes. Before leaving, he casually added,
"If you are ever in trouble in the future, just say a word. I will lend you a hand once."
After saying that, Jackson didn’t linger.
His figure quickly disappeared into the depths of the forest, leaving the three hunters standing there in silence.
The leader stared at Jackson’s disappearing back.
His lips moved slightly, as though he wanted to say something.
But after hesitating for a moment, he ultimately shook his head.
There was no point.
The inner region of the Blood Demon Forest was enormous. Even if Jackson really intended to help them in the future, there was no guarantee they would ever cross paths again.
The slender hunter clearly didn’t share his leader’s patience.
He hurriedly stepped forward and shouted toward Jackson’s distant figure,
"Senior! How are we supposed to contact you if we ever encounter trouble?"
His question was perfectly reasonable.
The inner region of the Blood Demon Forest was vast beyond imagination. The chances of the three hunters naturally encountering Jackson again were practically nonexistent.
Unfortunately, the leader didn’t seem particularly concerned about it.
He simply shook his head.
For him, their greatest gain had already been obtained.
They were alive.
That alone was enough.
Without saying another word, the leader turned around and walked toward the corpse of their fallen companion lying beside the tree.
His expression became heavy as he crouched down and began digging into the earth.
The other two hunters fell silent.
The earlier excitement over the monster core had completely disappeared.
Now, only the grim reality of the forest remained.
...
Of course, Jackson had no idea what the three hunters were thinking.
He had already pushed the matter to the back of his mind.
As for his promise to help them in the future, he had only said those words on a whim.
Whether he would actually remember them was another matter entirely.
Having obtained what he had come for, Jackson swiftly left the inner region of the Blood Demon Forest and began making his way toward the safer outer region.
The deeper forest gradually disappeared behind him.
Even after leaving, Jackson couldn’t help glancing back at the dreadful wilderness.
The Blood Demon Forest was far more dangerous than he had expected.
Jackson released a quiet sigh of relief.
Then his thoughts returned to the problem he had been considering earlier.
I should find another way to travel.
He glanced at the path stretching ahead.
Moving on foot is too slow.
He had already spent far too much time traveling through the forest. If he wanted to become stronger and complete more missions, wasting so much time on movement clearly wasn’t sustainable.
Jackson had only just formed that thought when a sudden chill ran down his spine.
His entire body instinctively stiffened.
Who...?
The next moment, a thick and unmistakable killing intent locked onto him.
The atmosphere around Jackson seemed to change instantly.
A cold sensation crawled across his skin as an eerie voice echoed from somewhere nearby.
"Kekeke..."
The strange laughter carried through the forest.
"I finally managed to find you, rat..."
Jackson’s expression immediately fell.
He knew that voice.
There was no mistaking it.
The demon hunter who had been pursuing him.
Samuel Twig.
