Time continued to flow like water. The sun slowly made its way up, lighting the world in its glorious light.
After noticing his mother’s distressed state, Jackson had been unable to sleep at all. He had stayed up all night thinking about what could have happened, and all sorts of possibilities flashed through his head.
Someone attacked her at the party...
Or a monster herd attack.
The possibilities were endless, and each one was worse than the last.
So when morning finally came, he hurriedly moved out of the room and headed toward his mother and little sister’s room. The apartment they lived in was not large. It had two rooms: one had been assigned to Jackson so he could study peacefully, while the other was shared by his mother and younger sister.
Jackson’s room was directly opposite theirs, with a hallway connecting the two rooms.
He had barely stepped out when he noticed a commotion coming from outside.
Jackson’s eyebrows immediately shot up. It was his mother’s voice, and another voice that sounded slightly familiar.
Mrs. Laker? What is she doing here?
Without wasting any time, he hurriedly moved to the entrance.
At the end of the corridor stood Jackson’s mother, her entire figure shaking with an expression dark as charcoal. Directly opposite her stood a slightly overweight woman. A gold-rimmed eyeglass covered half of her face, and on both ears hung earrings made directly from mana-core-crafted beast materials.
This elegantly dressed woman was none other than Mrs. Laker. She was not alone; beside her stood two fierce-looking men emitting terrifying auras.
Walking over from the side, Jackson’s expression turned furious. He smelled trouble.
Rose Von Jackson’s mouth opened as she pleaded, "Mrs. Laker, how can you ask us to move somewhere else? Please give us some time..."
Her voice was weak, filled with exhaustion, as if she had repeated those words a dozen times already.
At that time, Mrs. Laker’s eyes grew cold.
"Rose, all this time I have treated you like a younger sister... and now you are trying to paint me as a villain? For three years, while your children were studying, I did not raise the rent. While everyone else paid two hundred mana stones every month, you only paid one hundred and fifty. I suffered the loss silently... but now that I am unable to bear it, I want to raise the rent."
"You want to paint me as the villain in front of all of them?"
"What a schemer. What a venomous snake you are, Rose..."
"Moreover, I am not specially asking you to evacuate. Just pay the same rent as everyone else, and you are allowed to stay."
The more Jackson heard, the more furious he felt. Suddenly, he had the urge to tear her apart. His mother had been humiliated and insulted, and he only noticed it now? What the hell was he doing?
He quickly walked over and asked in a slightly furious voice:
"What is the meaning of this, Mrs. Laker? We have already paid this month’s rent..."
Just as he was about to continue speaking, Jackson stopped as he realized something. It was already the end of March, and the new month was about to begin.
Seeing how he had suddenly changed and fallen silent, a smile appeared on Mrs. Laker’s face. The two lackeys standing beside her also laughed in disdain.
The next moment, she turned to Jackson and said in a slightly polite voice:
"Little Jackson, I expected better from you, but now you have disappointed me... if only you... alas..."
After saying those words, Mrs. Laker’s face turned slightly stern. She was a smart woman, knowing exactly how much to push others. Jackson might not have awakened the legendary six-rank talent, but he was still a genius five-rank talent. If nothing bad happened, he would be able to serve in the military and, after a couple of years of service, achieve a respectable position. She did not want to turn this situation completely hostile.
Then she looked at both Jackson and Rose and said in a low voice:
"Considering our past relationship, take this as a warning. Today is the twenty-ninth of March. Keep the rent ready for next month. If you do not have money, pack your things and move out. This time, I am being polite, but do not expect the same treatment next time."
After saying this, she sharply turned and left without looking back.
Jackson watched her move farther and farther away, his fists tightly clenched.
In his mind, Mrs. Laker’s kind words from before echoed once again.
Little Jackson, you are just like my son... Ask anything, and I will do my best to arrange it for you.
Treat this as your home...
Now, in just one day, her behavior had completely changed. Reality was finally sinking in.
In the end, the world was not all sunshine and roses.
Depending on talent and power, things could change in a matter of minutes.
Jackson watched her figure walk away until she finally disappeared from view. His gaze shifted back to his mother, who stood there weakly, her body trembling. Clear teardrops had already begun gathering at the corners of her eyes.
Jackson suppressed his raging emotions and hugged her, trying to help her calm down.
"What’s wrong, Mother? It’s not that bad. It’s just fifty more mana stones. We can easily pay the extra..."
If this had happened before, he would have already started moving to another place. But in one month, he would be leaving to join the academy. As such, while he was away, he did not want to leave his family in a dangerous place. Here, although Mrs. Laker could be greedy, this place had still been safe in the end.
No matter how much anger he felt, Jackson could not let it affect his judgment.
On the other hand, when Jackson mentioned mana stones, tears started pouring out of Mother Rose’s eyes.
Jackson looked at this scene and let out an internal sigh. Why was she so emotional? Although he loved his mother, she sometimes became too sentimental, bawling her eyes out over everything.
"Where do we get fifty mana stones in just two days? The last bit of savings were spent on admitting Aella to the Dragon Strength Dojo, and some were spent on the party last night. I have less than twenty mana stones on me."
Mrs. Laker will throw us out. Where will we go?
Jackson’s expression fell.
He wanted to ask how they had spent more than two hundred mana stones, but then he remembered the pills.
In the end, Jackson was forced to swallow back what he wanted to say.
To make matters worse, he himself had also blown his savings on buying enhancement drugs.
So gathering an additional hundred and fifty mana stones was definitely going to be an issue.
Even though his thoughts were like this, he reassured her.
"Mother, don’t worry. I will think of something."
It took some time, but Mother Rose finally calmed down.
From start to finish, she did not ask what the result of the awakening ceremony was or how he had failed. Jackson also did not want to say. All this time, she had completely believed in him and supported him in every way she could.
This was also the reason he worked harder than anyone else, always striving to be the hardest worker in the room.
But alas, destiny had other plans.
Still, this was not the end. If one gate closed, another naturally opened.
The golden brush had filled Jackson’s heart with endless possibilities.
Mother Rose was also relieved. Her son was not the type to speak without confidence. If he said he would arrange the mana stones, he would do it. She trusted him completely.
Entering her room, Jackson saw Aella sleeping without making a single sound, completely unaware of all the commotion.
