Chapter 2010: The Calm Before The Storm (I)

Some powerhouses in the north were discussing next steps when light flared from a hall. The exalted emperors brightened with joy and promptly disappeared.

The Exalted Metal Spirit Emperor soon appeared. He looked at those assembled with a smile. “I have gathered three elements!”

The others erupted with joy.

“Congratulations, big brother!” Water Spirit quickly offered. “What a pity that we were a step too late. Chaos Sky and the rest gathered at Allheaven Hall a few days ago, supposedly to discuss dao...”

“Discuss dao?” sneered Metal Spirit. “They do so because they’ve reached a bottleneck. We are not the same as them, we don’t need that. Chaos Sky won’t be a match for me so long as I combine the five elements as one!”

When did one need to discuss dao? Only when they were out of options!

I’m not the same as them. I’ve only combined three elements, but I’m already stronger than Reincarnation was at his peak. I command six thousand daos and will exceed even Long Zhan when I reach four elements.

When I combine all five, only Chaos Sky will be able to match me in the entire chaos. I have no need to participate in such a pointless exercise.

The other exalted emperors swiftly nodded.

That was right!

Not to mention, how would those people truly discuss dao with each other? They would share some surface level details at most and more than likely issue threats to the rest. Who would really be willing to expose the core of their dao to outsiders?”

That would be the mark of a fool!

“Big brother, then we...”

Metal Spirit looked to the south and quickly redirected his gaze at the east.

“The eastern region!” he snorted. “They killed my brother. That Li Hao... courts death!”

Doesn’t he want to come to the south to take my life?

Very well, I’ll go to you!

I’d like to see what right you have to be so cocky!

“But... Chaos Sky and Spring Autumn...” worried the other exalted emperors. Too much commotion might raise attention from those two sides and inspire them to invade the north.

“There’s no rush, they won’t have time to spare for me soon!” Metal Spirit smirked in a meaningful way.

Changes were about to take place in the chaos.

......

Allheaven Hall.

Li Hao sat cross-legged in a small city below the secret realm. He was attended by a small crowd of exalted emperors. Eighth ranks Thunder Emperor and Fog Mountain were all present.

“The chaos is about to become a mess!” said Li Hao.

The group was confused. It’d always been a mess. Why the particular designation now?

“The mess that occurs this time will be one of the entire chaos, it won’t just be limited to the overlords and their ambitions,” the young man explained calmly. “It will involve some of the vanished ninth ranks and worlds. My attempt to create a false chaos might also incite enmity from all around!”

This trip to the distant past had shown him a lot of things. No one would permit him to create the chaos that he had in mind!

If he wanted to do that, it would shatter chaos dao and extract more strength from it. That action would further decrease the spirit within the chaos.

That was one reason. The second reason was that extracting too much strength from the chaos would interfere with the ninth ranks. He’d learned today that ninth ranks obtained their strength from the chaos!

Who would permit him to weaken them?

Once Li Hao utilized chaos dao to set up another universe, that would directly rob them of their energy!

The group’s expression changed when they heard Li Hao’s analysis.

“But there’s also good news,” laughed the young man. “The good news is that the eighth ranks in the four regions should not stand in my way when I create the false chaos!”

The group blinked with incomprehension.

“Because that will weaken the ninth ranks. Or rather, it will cut off their reserve energy. That’s a good thing to the current eighth ranks. While they’ll suffer some interference as well, they won’t be as affected as the ninth ranks!”

Hence, Li Hao was certain that Chaos Sky and the rest wouldn’t interfere with him when he created his own chaos. This might be the silver lining.

At the same time, it would be more troublesome if the ninth ranks threw a wrench in his plans. Thankfully, there wasn’t enough spirit in the modern age, so those ninth ranks might not be able to return. Even if they did, ninth ranks that’d lost a majority of spirit might not be so difficult to handle.

Of course, based on what Chaos Sky said, they would still rival him at that stage. Therefore, that meant a lot of heavyweights on par with Chaos Sky might ambush him! They would seek to stop Li Hao from starting another chaos universe.

So... did the young man have to continue with his plan?

He did!

How else would he perfect his dao?

I have to do it even if it pisses them off! That’s their business.

“So the chaos will definitely be thrown into an uproar in the times to come...” Li Hao said. “Skyward major world will return to what it once was. Many other ninth rank major worlds might see the return of their powerhouses as well. They probably left to search for more spirit and strength back in the day. They wanted more stability, nothing else!

“Most of them are likely still alive!” Li Hao said softly. “And for the moment, I don’t seem to have any major enemies...”

The others nodded in agreement. Li Hao’s interactions with the overlords appeared to have gone well. Well, they shared a grudge with Long Zhan. But the dragon wouldn’t necessarily start anything with a now-strong Li Hao since he needed to come into his power as well.

“But... I pursue freedom and dao...” Li Hao said softly. “Now... I might have some trouble.”

No matter what the ninth ranks needed him to do or needed a stronger dao of time for, he would run afoul of some issues.

Someone had their eyes set on his dao of time.

No, they had their eyes set on War’s dao of time.

Li Hao was rather resigned by how his future looked like. Just what had War seen? Why had he committed suicide? Or had he been unwilling to strengthen his time because he’d seen the future?

Perhaps he hadn’t wanted to satisfy certain people’s desires.

When it came to the current star of time, it was just a sixth rank dao star at present. However, it was developing quickly. The star was almost seventh rank now as it’d been growing during this period of time.

It might become what some people want once it grew to eighth or ninth rank.

War might not have necessarily been afraid. Perhaps he’d just... had a heavy distaste of what was to come!

Just as he’d disliked what he saw of New Martial and the Heavenly Emperor’s future, so he hadn’t been willing to be part of it. He’d simply made a few arrangements and left it all for the later generations to handle.

Take current times, for example. The ninth ranks might really need the power of time to stabilize something. War had seen it too, so he’d cast time aside. Whoever inherited it would be the lucky one to deal with that mess!

It was a voluntary arrangement. Time offered its cultivator a lot of conveniences and benefits. When one benefited with each sip and drink, one needed to pay a price for it.

“At the moment, I’m not the one in the most difficult circumstances,” Li Hao continued. “That honor belongs to Long Zhan. He is surrounded by enemies!

“He’ll be the first one affected by Skyward’s return. The struggle over four region supremacy and for the position of eastern region overlord will be a huge problem once the Skyward master is back.

“Long Zhan must not dare to set foot outside his territory for the moment, but that’s also a problem. Not moving means that he’ll have to face a fight with Skyward...”

Li Hao sighed when he thought of the chaos beast. It was true that he didn’t like Long Zhan for no reason other than seeing the dragon’s subordinates slaughter humans in Dragon Region. While that hadn’t been the dragon’s personal actions, he’d permitted it to happen.

If their positions were reversed and Li Hao’s people randomly butchered chaos beasts, Long Zhan would equally dislike Li Hao. This was a simple matter of not seeing eye to eye and a personal grudge.

It was difficult for Long Zhan to lift his race in a bid to rewrite their destiny. Chaos beasts were born of chaos dao, so if they really wished to change their fates, they needed to:

First, fill chaos dao with spirit again.

Second, have ninth ranks refrain from integrating with chaos dao and extracting spirit from the great dao.

Third, either have another way of nurturing spirit or finding a way to secede from chaos dao. The chaos beasts would have to figure out another method to cultivate. However, becoming independent of chaos dao was harder than ascending the heavens!

Long Zhan’s path might be even more difficult than unifying the chaos.

At the same time, Li Hao lamented his stroke of bad luck. He felt that he was friendly with everyone, but now a group of ninth ranks had set their eyes on his dao of time and wanted to prevent him from establishing his own chaos universe...

This created a situation in which Li Hao was very friendly to others, but might be just as unlucky as Long Zhan.

I don’t need to reverse my race’s destiny, but I think I’ve offended just as many people as the dragon. That sucks most of all!

Indeed, Li Hao found himself quite the innocent victim. What if... he cast away time? To hell with it all?

That wouldn’t work either!

He’d once wielded time. People might not believe that he’d discarded it. And even if they did, perhaps they’d want to eliminate him all the same?

Time...

Li Hao’s thoughts wandered to the person in the future again. People said that there was only one time, but the guy in the future didn’t seem to cultivate time. He focused on supernatural characters. Yet he was born within time...

If I create the chaos and he walks out of it to wield the river of time, does that mean he is the master of time?

Li Hao’s eyebrows rose.

Will I be able to cultivate time then? There is only one time, so how can there be two masters of time in a given age?

Countless plots ran through his mind, but there were drawbacks to all of them. He wouldn’t be the worst off, but the one from the future. If he went with any of his ideas, then that one might face endless troubles once he left his chaos.

No wonder he said I left him a ton of trouble to deal with... is this it?

If he threw time at that person and shifted the ninth rank gazes to him, then the little guy from the future would be public enemy number one as soon as he left his chaos! That would blow!

No, I can’t do that. That makes me the same as War then! Li Hao shook his head. He couldn’t do that.

Li Hao needed to resolve some of the problems before he threw everything wholesale at anyone else. It would be too unfair to the guy from the future if he did so otherwise. His conscience wouldn’t let him do so!

I’ve got a heart at the end of the day, alright?

Li Hao suddenly felt that War was utterly heartless. The great dao suffered from no conscience!

As expected, someone who has no desires is even more cold-blooded than me. I have some desires at the end of the day, and some ties to Silver Moon. I’m way better than you, War!
