The teams met in the tunnel shortly afterward.
Mbappé noticed Ling and raised a hand.
"Long time no see."
Ling smiled.
"Looking forward to seeing what you've got."
"You too."
There was little hostility between them.
Mbappé had openly spoken about studying parts of Ling's game, and both understood that admiration stopped mattering once the whistle blew.
Neymar stood nearby and studied United's captain more quietly.
He had spent years playing beside Messi and knew exactly what it felt like to share a pitch with a player who could distort an opponent's entire defensive plan.
Ling presented a different problem.
Messi at his peak could destroy defensive structures through dribbling and creation.
Ling combined similar one-on-one danger with greater physical power and a striker's obsession with finishing chances.
PSG therefore could not allow him repeated isolated situations near the penalty area.
Thiago Silva, meanwhile, exchanged a few words with several former PSG teammates.
His departure from Paris had not ended in hostility, and there were smiles on both sides.
Tuchel had considerably less reason to enjoy the reunion.
Thiago's performances for United had been outstanding, and his knowledge of PSG's attackers added another complication.
He knew Neymar's preferred movements, understood Mbappé's acceleration patterns, and had spent years training against Di María.
Watching him wearing United red was an uncomfortable reminder of what Paris had allowed to leave.
Tuchel rubbed his forehead.
The stress of preparing for Ling was already bad enough.
Perhaps he really did need to ask Conte where he had his hair done.
...
The Champions League anthem began.
Players from both teams walked onto the pitch as the noise inside the Estádio da Luz rose around them.
Peter Drury introduced the occasion.
"Manchester United against Paris Saint-Germain. The defending champions against a club appearing in its first European Cup final. United are chasing something unprecedented in the Champions League era: a third consecutive title."
Beglin turned to the tactical setup.
Mourinho had selected the familiar 4-3-1-2.
De Gea started in goal, with Wan-Bissaka, Thiago Silva, Maguire, and Alex Sandro in defense. Kanté, Matić, and McTominay formed the midfield three, while Bruno Fernandes operated ahead of them.
Mahrez partnered Ling in attack.
"It is the structure Mourinho trusts most in major European matches," Beglin explained. "Three central midfielders protect the defense and allow Bruno to operate with more freedom. Mahrez can drift wide, while Ling can play almost anywhere across the front."
United supporters discussing the lineup were satisfied.
📱 @StretfordEndTom
This midfield is much more stable than the old Pogba setup. Less individual flair from deep, but much harder to play through.
📱 @UnitedStand ✔
McTominay starting a Champions League final after everything he went through in the academy. Mourinho really did turn him into one of his most trusted players.

Thiago Silva beside Maguire has transformed that defense. Experience plus physicality.
📱 @TransferWatch
And Aké arrives in the summer after his Bournemouth loan ends. United's defensive depth is getting ridiculous.

One more match for three consecutive Champions Leagues.
PSG lined up in a 4-3-3.
Keylor Navas was in goal. Kehrer started on the right of defense, with Kimpembe and Bakker centrally and Bernat on the left.
Marquinhos operated as the deepest midfielder alongside Paredes and Verratti, while Di María, Neymar, and Mbappé formed the front three.
The contrast between the squads was obvious.
United were built around balance.
PSG's greatest strength was concentrated much farther forward.
"Paris possess one of the most dangerous attacking trios in football," Beglin said. "The question is whether the structure behind them can survive long enough to let Neymar, Mbappé, and Di María decide the match."
The discussion among supporters reflected the same concern.
📱 @ParisUltra
Everyone keeps talking about the defense. Kimpembe was excellent against Bayern, and Marquinhos protects them extremely well.
📱 @NeutralUCLWatch
The PSG front three can decide this match without needing twenty chances. United cannot become careless.
📱 @RedDevilTactics
Ling against that center-back pairing is the obvious matchup, but if PSG send three players toward him every time, Bruno and Mahrez will get space.
📱 @BayernZone
Paris already survived Lewandowski. Stop acting like the match is over before kickoff.
📱 @LegacyFootball
Exactly. Finals are where predictions go to die.
...
The referee checked both sides.
BEEP!
The Champions League final began.
United took the kickoff.
Ling rolled the ball backward to Bruno, who continued the pass into midfield rather than forcing an immediate attack.
PSG's shape became obvious almost immediately.
They were not going to press United high.
Tuchel had used a similar approach against Bayern, keeping the midfield compact in front of the defensive line and waiting for opportunities to counter through the front three.
"Paris are giving United possession in their own half," Beglin said. "Paredes, Verratti, and Marquinhos are protecting the central spaces rather than chasing the ball."
The difference was that United had no intention of attacking with the same relentless high line Bayern had used.
Mourinho understood exactly what Neymar and Mbappé wanted.
Space.
He refused to give it to them.
United advanced patiently, usually keeping enough players behind the ball to protect against a turnover.
"Both teams are being cautious," Drury observed. "Not unusual for a final. PSG want the counterattack, while United are refusing to provide one."
Sandro received on the left and declined the opportunity to dribble forward. Instead, he played diagonally into Ling, who had moved away from the defensive line to receive.
PSG reacted instantly.
Verratti approached from midfield, while Bakker and Kehrer narrowed around him.
Tuchel's plan was clear.
Whenever Ling received in a potentially dangerous position, Paris would surround him with numbers rather than leave one defender isolated.
Ling recognized the trap and did not fight it.
He returned the ball to Matić with one touch, then immediately turned and ran toward the penalty area.
United had spent years learning how to attack deep defensive blocks.
If PSG denied the ground through the middle, Mourinho's side had other options: switches of play, long-range shots, crosses, and set pieces.
They also had considerably more aerial strength than Paris.
Maguire and Thiago Silva were obvious threats on dead balls, while Ling's jumping ability made him dangerous even against larger defenders.
The first example arrived in the sixth minute.
Wan-Bissaka advanced down the right and used his strength to protect possession from Paredes before slipping the ball toward Mahrez.
Mahrez carried it toward the byline.
Bernat stayed close enough to prevent an easy cut inside, so Mahrez chose not to force the dribble and instead attempted to deliver the ball into the area.
Bernat blocked it behind.
Corner.
United's first of the final.
Mahrez walked toward the flag.
Inside the penalty area, Maguire and Thiago Silva joined Ling among the targets while PSG organized a mixture of zonal and man-to-man marking.
"This is one of United's clearest physical advantages," Beglin said. "Maguire, Thiago Silva, and Ling are all excellent in the air, so PSG cannot afford to lose their assignments."
Players began moving as Mahrez prepared to take the corner.
The first major set piece of the Champions League final was about to be delivered.
...
Mahrez raised one arm before delivering the corner toward the near post.
Maguire immediately attacked the space, using his size and momentum to get across Kimpembe.
The PSG defender tried to hold his ground but was forced backward, allowing United's center-back to reach the ball first.
Instead of attempting an awkward header at goal, Maguire flicked it across the six-yard box.
Bakker had moved over to cover him and now had to turn quickly toward the far post.
Ling was already there.
He had deliberately stayed behind the initial contest, using Maguire's run to disappear from Bakker's line of sight.
By the time the defender realized where he had gone, Ling only needed to guide the ball toward goal.
He met Maguire's flick with a controlled header and redirected it beyond Navas!
1–0.
Manchester United had scored after only six minutes!
"A beautifully worked corner from United," Drury said. "Mahrez finds Maguire at the near post, Maguire redirects it across goal, and Ling arrives unnoticed at the far side."
Beglin focused on the movement rather than the finish.
"That looks simple once Ling heads it in, but the routine creates the goal. Maguire drags Kimpembe toward the near post, Bakker is forced across to cover, and Ling waits for exactly the moment when nobody is looking at him."
The goal also carried another statistical landmark.
Ling had entered the final with nineteen Champions League goals.
Now he had twenty.
The first player to reach that number in a single Champions League campaign.
There was little time for him to think about it.
A final that had begun cautiously had changed immediately.
PSG could no longer spend the evening waiting for United to overcommit and leave Neymar or Mbappé space on the counter. A
t some point, they would have to take greater risks.
Ling slid briefly toward the corner before getting back to his feet as his teammates arrived around him.
He had expected the pursuit of a third consecutive Champions League title to be exhausting from the opening whistle, but PSG's defensive plan had already revealed a weakness.
Whenever Ling received between the lines, Tuchel wanted several players collapsing around him.
That certainly made Ling's own job more difficult.
It also meant those defenders had to leave somebody else.
United had enough quality around him to exploit that.
The corner had been the first obvious example.
PSG had become so concerned with the first physical contest that Ling had been allowed to arrive at the far post virtually unchallenged.
Maguire grabbed him around the shoulders.
"That counts as my assist."
"It definitely counts."
Maguire looked delighted.
United had spent hours rehearsing variations from corners, and his aerial presence was central to many of them.
Scoring in a Champions League final would have been satisfying enough; helping create the opening goal felt almost as good.
Ling quickly brought the conversation back to the match.
"Keep going, but don't get careless. Their front three are still dangerous."
Maguire nodded.
He did not need reminding.
Neymar, Mbappé, and Di María could change a match with very little warning.
