Starting Unlimited Evolution from Grinding
Chapter 408: Dark Tide Converges — Another Legendary-Level Enemy?Of course, aside from the Knight profession, other classes also gained some increases from this battle.
The Warrior profession rose from level 28 to 29, Assassin and Ranger moved from 27 to 28, Mage and Priest reached level 30, now only one level away from advancing to the Heroic Realm.
This meant Lin Mo needed to pay a bit more attention.
Not too much, though.
After all, going from level 30 to 31 still required a lot of base attribute points — a full 100 points.
So it wouldn’t affect the current fight.
Lin Mo checked his status panel again.
[Name]: Lin Mo
[Profession]: Warrior Lv.29, Knight Lv.27, Assassin Lv.28, Mage Lv.30, Priest Lv.30, Ranger Lv.28 (Paladin Lv.2, Spellsword Lv.2, Night Hunter Lv.2)
Strength: 753 (+1236 = 1989) ×1.3
Agility: 702 (+1419 = 2121) ×1.3
Constitution: 656 (+1261 = 1917) ×1.3
Spirit: 57 (+739 = 796)
Mana: 823 (+994 = 1817) ×1.3
...
Compared to before, Lin Mo’s attributes had improved noticeably.
Just as Lin Mo finished checking his stats and teleported again in front of a gnome, ready to finish it, something unexpected happened on the battlefield.
The gnome in front of him suddenly clutched its own throat, wearing an expression of painful shock.
Its eyes bulged, looking as if they were about to pop from their sockets.
What was going on?
Lin Mo froze for a moment, hesitated half a second, then pulled back to create distance. Only after stepping away did he launch his magic attack.
However, as his spell approached the gnome, it was stopped by a pitch-black barrier that had suddenly appeared.
It was the Dark Tide.
Then, visibly, something was drawn out from the gnome and poured into the Dark Tide.
What did the Dark Tide want to do?
Lin Mo glanced at the battle among the three Legendary-level heavyweights in the distance.
The Gnome Emperor was clearly at a disadvantage, barely holding on.
It seemed the Emperor hadn’t panicked, but the Dark Tide was starting to hurry.
So what exactly was it trying to do?
Lin Mo didn’t know, but that didn’t stop him from acting.
In the next moment, radiant Holy Light burst into being in his palm, and in an instant it dispelled the Dark Tide before him.
Lin Mo looked around. The other powerful gnomes, and almost all the surrounding goblins, had fallen into similar states. He furrowed his brow.
Using Holy Light Power to dispel a single Dark Tide is fairly easy, but with so many at once... to stop them simultaneously would require releasing massive amounts of Holy Light Power in a carpet-like cleansing. The cost would be enormous.
He might need that Holy Light Power later to assist with sealing.
In the end, he gave up on intervening and decided to watch what the Dark Tide was doing.
After Lin Mo withheld his interference, many goblins and gnomes were soon "emptied" of their bodies by the Dark Tide, collapsing helplessly to the ground.
Then, these sated streams of Dark Tide quickly converged and poured into the last gnome that hadn’t yet fallen.
I see.
Lin Mo immediately understood: scattering and attacking one by one wouldn’t work — they’d be picked off individually. So the Dark Tide gathered power to form a single powerful creature.
Watching the Dark Tide’s aura grow stronger and stronger, Lin Mo’s expression steadily darkened.
The creature formed from the amassed Dark Tide energy, and from the stolen power of goblins and gnomes, did seem rather strong.
Its aura had unquestionably surpassed the Heroic Realm range, reaching a level comparable to the Royal Astrologer of the Roxez Empire.
No, it had already surpassed him... and it kept growing stronger!
Legendary-level?!
If that were really the case, things would become difficult.
Lin Mo’s current strength could undoubtedly match the peak of the Heroic Realm, but the gap between the Heroic peak and a true Legendary-level was massively large.
“You needn’t worry!”
At that moment, Duke Danlo, in charge of command, spoke again: “Its energy level reached nearly the Royal Astrologer’s, but this creature has no domain. If we cooperate, we may yet defeat it!”
Those words immediately restored a lot of confidence among the troops.
Indeed, what made Legendary-level foes so terrifying was not just raw attributes but the presence of a domain.
The difference between having a domain and not having one was enormous — hence the saying, “Below Legendary, all are ants.”
A practitioner who has just stepped into Legendary level should not, in theory, be so outclassed by a Heroic peak, but the existence of a domain makes both parties feel like they are on completely different planes.
Even several Heroic peak fighters working together would likely only be able to barely hold their ground, let alone win. Surviving would be a success.
But if the creature’s Legendary-level status were only in magnitude, the level of threat would immediately be reduced.
Even if its energy intensity had not only reached level 41 at the Legendary threshold but was now level 42, or even approaching level 43, as long as it had no domain, there was still a way to contend with it.
Having a way, however, did not mean it would be easy.
What awaited them would undoubtedly be an extremely grueling battle.
Right now, the Royal Astrologer and the Elven High Priest were busy suppressing the Gnome Emperor, and the Holy Son was helping, so they were all occupied. They would have to fend for themselves.
Duke Danlo’s gaze swept across the assembled fighters, weighing the available force, his brow tightening further.
He had spoken those reassuring words to steady morale, but in reality, facing that creature would still be exceedingly difficult.
There weren’t many fully capable Heroic-level fighters left; others had fallen or been injured and could not continue fighting.
Among the remaining Heroic-levels, most could only provide a little harassment. Truly contending with this creature required someone at Heroic-peak level — a handful of people at most.
Moreover, their condition wasn’t ideal. Although injuries were mostly light, their stamina and energy had been heavily drained.
Could they really win this battle?
To be honest, Danlo felt no certainty.
Forcing an affirmative answer now would be lying to himself.
The Dark Tide’s aggregation was nearing completion.
From an energy-tier perspective, the creature before them had indeed exceeded the Royal Astrologer, and not by a little — it was very likely at level 43.
There was no time to deliberate. They had to strike now!
Danlo’s pupils contracted as he roared, “Attack!”
By striking now, they could still seize a measure of initiative.
With that order, he moved first, launching a brilliant bolt of lightning at the creature.
The lightning struck the gnome that had absorbed massive Dark Tide energy with a sharp crack.
Yet the dazzling lightning produced little satisfaction. It only gave off a wisp of smoke; the target didn’t even twitch. Clearly, this strike had caused almost no effective damage.
Duke Danlo frowned deeply.
He hadn’t used his strongest technique in order to act first; he had chosen the spell with the fastest release speed, but that spell still packed decent power.
Earlier, facing other gnomes, that technique had instantly killed a mid-Heroic gnome.
But against the creature now, it accomplished nothing.
Could they really win this?
A question rose in Danlo’s heart.
Still, there was no retreat. Even if they gritted their teeth, they had to keep fighting.
After the failed strike, Danlo’s eyes hardened as he began furiously gathering magical power.
At the same time, other professionals joined the fray.
Many Knights and Warriors closed in, surrounding the creature.
Yet none dared to attack rashly. Unlike Rangers and Mages who struck from range, charging in required them to accept great risk. If the assault failed — or even if it succeeded but didn’t produce sufficient effect — they could be counterattacked.
Even without a domain, a creature of Legendary-level energy could likely kill them in a single blow.
So encircling the creature served more as a defensive measure, guarding against sudden assaults on the Mages and Rangers.
If they only had to defend, the situation became somewhat better.
As for output, that burden fell to the ranged professionals...
Strong Elven archers readied their bows and unleashed their signature skills at the monster.
This time, however, the creature didn’t stand there to be hit. It slowly raised a hand and a black barrier instantly appeared before it. The dozen or so arrows shot by the Elven elites were stopped outside the barrier. Those attacks only left the faintest, almost imperceptible cracks on that black surface.
So ten or so Heroic-level Rangers combined could only achieve that?
Next came the Mages’ magic bombardment.
One powerful spell after another slammed at the creature, and for a time the surrounding elements were thrown into chaos by the repeated impacts.
The Rangers launched another volley to coordinate with the Mages’ barrage.
Under such a massive stack of attacks, the black barrier finally began to fracture and was broken by the continuous blows.
At that moment, several Heroic-peak fighters who had been waiting struck.
“Final Sword Slash!”
“Dawnbreaker Arrow!”
“Thunderclap Fury!”
...
These attacks were clearly on a different level from the previous strikes, much more potent.
Now that the creature’s protective barrier had just been breached, these blows seemed poised to land on it without obstruction.
Yet in that instant, the "gnome" that had remained motionless finally moved.
Calling it a gnome no longer fit. Only a rough outline remained; otherwise, it was wholly wrapped in black mist and looked bizarre.
Its speed was extreme — so fast that many Heroic-level fighters could not see its movements. In an instant, it effortlessly dodged the devastating sword energy, then casually picked up a nearby great axe and swung precisely, cleaving an incoming arrow in two.
Finally, Duke Danlo’s signature move, “Thunderclap Fury,” landed solidly on it, but the effect was very limited.
Since a Heroic-peak warrior had truly used full force, the hit was not insignificant. The creature did stagger in pain, clearly affected.
But in less than half a second, it acted as if nothing had happened and charged toward them again.
“No good. It has no effect!”
Seeing this, everyone grew anxious.
Even Danlo’s strike had little result. The gap between them and this Legendary-level entity seemed larger than they had imagined.
Even without a domain, it remained completely on another tier.
“Everyone, don’t panic.”
From among the Elves, an elf who looked middle-aged stepped forward. Suddenly, numerous roots burst from the ground and precisely entangled the "gnome," momentarily halting its steps.
The "gnome" roared in anger and swung its axe, cleaving the roots. But the elf immediately summoned fresh roots that kept tangling around it.
This elf was one of the Elders of the Elven race, and among the Elders he ranked among the highest in status.
Elves appear forever young, so someone who looked middle-aged must be in the last tenth of an elf’s lifespan — one of the oldest elves besides the Elven High Priest.
His strength was also formidable. Though he hadn’t reached Legendary level, he was noticeably stronger than typical Heroic-peak fighters — an elf on the path to Legendary, though he had not completed the journey.
This Elven Elder temporarily trapped the "gnome." Coupled with his words, the previously panicked fighters calmed and resumed their assault.
This time everyone went all out, including Warriors and Knights doing everything they could — sword energy, throwing attacks, whatever they could try.
Under the assault of dozens of fighters, the "gnome" finally showed signs of weakening; the black mist seemed to thin slightly.
But soon it recovered.
Regardless, this proved their attacks had effect.
This greatly encouraged everyone, and subsequent attacks grew denser and more ferocious.
For a time, they actually managed to suppress the creature.
But...
Despite the situation seeming to trend positive, Duke Danlo inexplicably felt a bad premonition.
Would things really be that simple?
