Chapter 695: Expedition BeginsTwo days later, Alaric’s army arrived at the encampment of the allied forces of the various empires.
As soon as he arrived, he was welcomed by the Astanian Emperor together with the leaders of other nations.
"I am glad to see you all in perfect shape. Did you encounter any trouble on the road?" The Astanian Emperor smiled at him.
Alaric shook his head and replied with a chuckle. "Our allied troops have already cleared the road. No monsters dared to get close to us."
They encountered some powerful monsters along the way, but they were all too afraid to approach them. They only observed Alaric’s troops from a safe distance.
"Is that so?" The Astanian Emperor laughed. He then pulled Alaric to the camp and asked him more questions about their encounters on the road.
While answering the emperor’s queries, Alaric sent a hand signal to the others, instructing them to settle down inside the camp.
As they stepped inside the camp, Alaric asked about the progress of their preparations. "How are the preparations for the expedition?"
John Phillip Astania’s face suddenly turned serious. "Everything is ready. We are only waiting for a few more forces. As soon as they get here, we will depart at once."
"That’s good." Alaric nodded.
"We do have some issues." John Phillip revealed a troubled look.
Alaric raised an eyebrow and waited for him to explain.
Seeing his questioning look, the Astanian Emperor recounted the minor incidents that occurred in the past few days.
"With the size of our army and the differences in our customs, there were a few clashes. The leaders have already pacified the troops, but the issue is still there. If we don’t deal with this, it will become a huge problem."
Since the allied army was composed of several dozen armies from different nations, there were instances of discrimination and bullying, especially against the troops from smaller nations.
The disputes were temporarily resolved, but it was only a matter of time before such incidents happened again.
It wouldn’t be good for the allied forces’ morale. They might even end up fighting before they could even reach their destination.
Alaric furrowed his eyebrows. He had faced similar matters before, but they were in much smaller cases. The allied forces numbered over a million, with the total number being close to two million.
How should we resolve this issue?
He pondered deeply, trying to recall how they had dealt with similar matters back then.
Seeing that he had gone silent, the Astanian Emperor didn’t disturb him.
After almost five minutes of silence, Alaric finally spoke. "We should establish strict rules and discipline in the allied forces."
"To prevent conflicts from escalating, we must enforce these laws with an iron fist!" He calmly emphasized.
"The most important thing the allied army needs is communication. Our forces speak in different languages. If we can’t understand each other, misunderstandings are bound to happen. We can solve this problem by enforcing a strict use of the common language. Those who violate this rule will be punished by their respective leaders." Alaric’s words made the Astanian Emperor nod in agreement.
"Your suggestion is great. I will inform the leaders about this and have them relay the message to their respective troops."
"Another thing is to..." Alaric suggested a few more solutions to the issue.
The Astanian Emperor couldn’t help but praise him. "You just arrived, but you already solved the problem that caused me so much headache. How about I pass the alliance leader position to you?"
Alaric quickly shook his head. "I am not as smart as you think, Your Majesty. It just so happens that I encountered similar situations back then."
He didn’t bother to respond to the Astanian Emperor’s jest about passing the alliance leader position on to him. He knew the other party was just teasing him.
"Haha! Stop being humble." John Phillip laughed and clapped his shoulder, looking quite amused by his awkward expression.
"Go get some rest. I will handle this matter." He instructed before leaving with a wave of his hand.
Looking at the emperor’s figure, Alaric could only shake his head with a wry smile. The more he got to know the Astanian Emperor, the more he realized that the guy was more easygoing than he knew.
Soon, new rules were imposed on the allied troops. With the strict order from their leaders, the atmosphere in the camp took a drastic change.
No conflict erupted in the next several days. Moreover, the communication between the various factions also significantly improved.
Four days after Alaric’s arrival, the last force they were waiting for finally arrived at the camp.
The Alliance Leader, John Phillip Astania, immediately commanded the various leaders to disassemble the camp.
John Phillip jumped onto his mount and gestured at the flag bearer by his side. "Raise the flag."
Hearing his command, the flag bearer lifted the flag and waved it back and forth.
More flag bearers saw the signal and they quickly raised their flags to relay the instruction to the other troops.
The heavy sound of drums echoed, signaling the troops to begin the march.
The expedition officially began.
...
Surprisingly, everything went rather smoothly. The allied forces didn’t encounter a major obstacle for a whole month. No beasts or creatures dared to stop their march. Even the most feared monsters in the Enchanted Woodlands scurried away when they sensed the troops of the allied forces.
At this moment, on his horse’s back, Alaric asked with a frown. "Is there still no news from our scouts?"
John Phillip shook his head. "We haven’t heard word from them, but looking at the time, we should be getting their daily report any time soon."
Alaric nodded solemnly.
For now, their provisions were enough. However, it wasn’t infinite. They could hunt for food, but the problem was their water. Once they ran out of potable water, everyone would be dehydrated.
"We must find a water source as quickly as possible!" Alaric mumbled.
