Amanda hummed softhe tly to herself as she pinned the film against the wall across from the bed, arranging it much as it had been before.

Since there was never enough space on the wall to install a television, they had come up with another way to enjoy their movies on a proper big screen. It was a simple arrangement, but it had gradually become part of their little routine.

Amanda already had a few ideas about what they could watch today, and she knew Kyle would enjoy every one of them.

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Veronica and Kyle were busy preparing snacks. Nothing elaborate, just a few French fries from the frozen packets, some nachos with warm cheese sauce, and a couple of drinks to go with them.

Kyle stood over the stove, frying the fries while Veronica diced the vegetables.

"How are things at the base now?" Kyle asked in a low voice. "Everything settled?"

Veronica had been away for some time, and during her absence, the one person she trusted most to keep the base running had been sent away. Timothy had been more than just her most reliable comrade. He was someone capable of handling the base in her absence, and the officers respected him as well. His sudden departure had inevitably left things in disarray.

But now, things were beginning to stabilize.

"I got some help from the central authority," Veronica replied. "They seem to be making an effort, perhaps because if they still intend to raid the Temple in the near future, they want me to be of use to them."

Kyle hummed, "Well, I barely believe there would be any more raids on the temple any time soon."

Humanity was in its transition period, where they needed to adapt quickly or watch their biggest fear come true.

Their utmost priority has always lain in keeping the aether world from the unawakened beings. Their reasoning was wary, but the world government itself had come down to the mutual decision that the world was a better place as long as unrelated humans didn’t get related to the horrors of the other side.

"The oath," Kyle asked, "I feel they won’t be able to have each one of them accept the oath. And considering how vast the world is, and how remotely some people live, this secret would come out sooner or later."

The oath binds every Nightwalker to not spill the secret to the world. When Kyle arrived at the base, Jimmy mentioned it, specifically so because Kyle would have been asked to take it.

However, things were bound to change now.

"It would be quite chaotic when that happens." Veronica chuckled and shook her head.

Silence settled in the kitchen after that.

Veronica glanced at Kyle and then spoke in a hesitant voice. "I...recently came across Blake, Kyle."

Kyle briefly paused stirring the juice and looked up, not looking at Veronica but staring blankly ahead.

Veronica continued, "He looked....hollow. Blank. Like he was just moving about his life without any excitement or purpose. He has never been the type to joke around or smile when greeting someone, but I have never seen a man so dead before despite breathing and living like anyone else."

Those words definitely struck Kyle somewhere in his heart as he took a deep breath and leaned against the counter after turning around.

Amanda surely had heard their conversation since she said, "I also came across him recently. I wanted to check on Brother Blake...and he is not doing well at all, Kyle."

Kyle looked down for a moment before the question arose from the side, "You removed everything about yourself from his memories but you still live somewhere in his mind...and not being able to recognize you in his memories must be consuming him from the inside."

Amanda nodded, "If there is someone who deserves the most to remember you...know whatever happened, it’s him, Kyle. He has always been helpful toward you. You should not abandon him like this."

Hearing their voice that held nothing but conviction, Kyle exhaled another breath and said, "Heard you. I will do something about it."

Amanda instantly smiled and turned to the silver head. Veronica was smiling in relief as well as she squeezed Kyle’s shoulder and muttered, "Thank you."

Kyle nodded at her and returned to the preparation.

Not so long after, they brought all the snacks to the small foldable table before the bed.

Lights were turned off and the projector began directing the movie onto the screen.

It was going to be an enjoyable evening, and all three of them knew it.

....

"Yes, thank you." Layena nodded towards the medical staff before she made her way out of the infirmary.

She was there for a routine checkup, which she couldn’t skip after the recent operations.

Recently, she had been participating in a lot of missions, and that was not only her but others as well.

The sudden increase in the rifts around the world had left the authorities with no option but to push their officers to be always available and ready to depart.

’Though a schedule like this should have exhausted me, but...’ Layena had been involved in four operations in two days, and all of them required her to take part in the combat, mostly because she had always been cautious when it came to the lives of her comrades.

And yet, she wasn’t feeling that tired to just hit the bed and sleep for a day.

It might sound a little ambitious, but she was ready to go for a few hours of training, or maybe another operation, if her help was required.

But she reined in her emotions, sat in the corner of the cafeteria, and ordered herself a coffee.

Alone, all by herself, she decided to listen to some music.
