Chapter 432: Dividing the Battlefield
"An avatar?"
The long-faced, effeminate elder of the Netherkin Race race, Qing Yan, instantly darkened.
They were currently positioned north of the imperial capital. With his sharp eyes, he could clearly see the image projected above the northern formation—the "Empress" in the light screen and the "Empress" standing before him both wore the same mocking smile.
At that very moment, the Empress standing above the northern formation raised the Human Emperor Sword ever so slightly.
The Divine Artifact quivered in her grasp.
Then, her sword fell.
Within the Netherkin ranks, six Netherkin bore deep sword wounds across their bodies—life force cut off, souls extinguished.
Among the fallen, two were late-stage Nascent Soul cultivators, and four were mid-stage.
Beyond that, dozens more Netherkin were left bleeding, with wounds shallow and deep marking their foreheads.
And that was after he had intervened in time—Qing Yan’s expression turned grim.
When he had first seen the capital seemingly unguarded, he’d thought the Immortal Nation had been caught off guard—unprepared for their sudden assault, still leisurely hosting their so-called "Human Immortal List."
But now... it was clear the Immortal Nation had been far more prepared than they’d imagined.
’Damn it! It’s as if they knew our movements in advance!’
Though inwardly seething, his face remained cold and sinister as he sneered, "Heh, such calculation, Empress of the Immortal Nation. You used a mere avatar to deceive us while your true body secretly activated the royal formation—charging the Human Emperor Sword with power for this strike."
He firmly concluded that the Empress inside the Trial of Ascension Platform’s space must be only an avatar, for the Human Emperor Sword could only be wielded by the true sovereign of the Immortal Nation.
Qing Yan was among the more intelligent of the Netherkin Race elders, and with his prior knowledge of the capital’s defenses, his deduction came quickly.
His gaze fixed on the young woman holding the dark-golden sword. Beneath her, golden light was spreading across the ground, flowing outward to envelop the entire city.
It was the Royal City Formation, one of the Immortal Nation’s greatest foundations—centered on the Human Emperor Sword, capable of shielding all living beings within the capital, and accelerating the gathering of their collective faith and life force.
Activating it consumed a tremendous amount of power... clearly, the Immortal Nation had made full preparations.
"Unfortunately," Qing Yan narrowed his eyes, "though the Human Emperor Sword is a peerless Divine Artifact, the one wielding it is only a mere Nascent Soul cultivator. Even with the formation’s blessing, how many lives can you truly protect?"
. . .
On the other side, the citizens of the Immortal Nation stood dumbstruck.
The Human Emperor Sword’s radiance had washed away their fear, yet it did nothing to dull their awe.
Compared to this overwhelming spectacle, the earlier Netherkin Extermination Operation in the northern district now seemed like a mere skirmish.
Still, having witnessed that earlier battle, they were not as shocked by their Empress’s power as the first time—only deeply moved, excitement surging in their chests.
"Elder Yun, Elder Lei."
The Empress ignored her enemy’s words and spoke lightly.
At her command, the clouds in the sky began to churn violently, as if stirred by an unseen hand. Centered around the two Netherkin race invasion leaders, they twisted into a massive, inverted vortex.
Boom!
A pillar of lightning tore down from the heart of the storm.
Faced with such heavenly might, the nine-foot-tall giant bear Netherkin only snorted coldly.
"Petty tricks!"
He spread his arms wide, his muscles bulging and transforming into massive bear claws that surged forward, meeting the lightning head-on.
The two forces collided midair, unleashing a wave of fiery explosions.
Heaven and earth trembled as a tempest swept outward. Every Nascent Soul cultivator within range teleported away in haste, while golden light flickered over the bodies of the Immortal Nation’s lower citizens, protecting them.
When the smoke finally cleared, only three figures remained at the center of the battlefield.
. . .
Inside the Imperial Palace.
"The blue-robed Netherkin has vanished from the northern sector. During the clash between Elder Yun and Elder Lei’s spells against that bear Netherkin, he transformed into a single blue feather and disappeared—along with a large number of his forces."
"He’s reappeared in the south, just as Your Majesty predicted. He’s rapidly constructing a new Nether Formation, right atop the remnants of the one we haven’t yet dismantled."
"The other missing Nascent Soul Netherkin invades have surfaced in the east and west sectors—they’ve begun rampant destruction."
"We still can’t determine how the Netherkin Races are entering the city directly. It’s impossible to tell if there are more yet to appear."
The woman wearing a withered-leaf mask, Wutong, held a small leaf between her fingers, spiritual energy surging faintly around her.
With each word that left her lips, the leaf in her hand grew a shade more yellow and brittle, while her own aura visibly weakened.
"We can’t wait any longer," she said quietly. "If we do, the Human Emperor Sword’s power will eventually reach its limit—the more civilians drawn into the fighting, the faster it will drain. Tian Zhu, prepare to activate the formation."
She clenched the nearly crumbled leaf tightly in her palm. Beneath the mask, her closed eyes slowly opened, and she turned to look behind her.
Only one person stood there.
It was a frail young girl wearing a spiderweb-patterned mask, her small head drooping, nodding off as if she might fall asleep at any moment.
"Tian Zhu!"
Wutong’s voice suddenly rose sharply.
The little girl jumped in alarm.
"Ah—Sister Wutong, I’m awake, I was listening! I wasn’t asleep, really..."
Flustered, Tian Zhu stammered, her eyes darting beneath the mask.
Wutong stared at her for a moment, then sighed.
"Forget it. You’ve worked hard these past few days... After this, I’ll petition Her Majesty to grant you some leave."
"R–really?" Tian Zhu’s eyes brightened instantly. "I knew you were the nicest to me, Sister Wutong!"
"Less talk. Prepare the formation."
"O–okay..."
Encouraged by Wutong’s words, the lazy aura around Tian Zhu seemed to dissipate a little. Without further hesitation, she raised one delicate hand.
"Heavenly Net Formation!"
As she cried out, a small slit opened at the tip of her index finger, and a drop of crimson blood floated out.
The instant it appeared, the tiny golden web coiled around her forearm quivered as if it had caught the scent of divine nectar. It tore free, flying toward the droplet and merging with it.
In the next moment, the golden web was dyed blood-red. Strange, profound runes began to rise and dance along its strands.
Beneath the feet of the two Six Gate Bureau Golden Ranked members, distorted formation patterns—engraved there at some unknown time—began to pulse in resonance with the web.
Brilliant light flared. The formation spread outward from the Imperial Palace, expanding madly in all directions.
The ground trembled, as though something beneath it was struggling to break free.
Wutong turned her gaze toward the window, eyes fixed on the chaos consuming every corner of the capital.
’Something’s off... If the Netherkin race truly meant to do something this drastic, they wouldn’t have sent only two Divine Transformation Realm Netherkin. Yet Her Majesty was certain the temporary Nether Formations they’ve set won’t be able to summon another Netherkin of that level...’
Her eyes flickered, thoughts racing—but as the formation’s light continued to spread, her spiritual energy poured out of her body in torrents.
All across the Imperial Palace, dormant formations lit up one after another, converging into a single massive column of light that shot straight into the heavens.
The thick clouds above were swept away in an instant—
But what appeared beyond them was not a vast, blue sky.
At that moment, whether human or Netherkin, everyone in the royal city lifted their heads to behold a sight that made their hearts tremble.
From within the parting mist emerged a massive city, half-real and half-formed of golden light—
An inverted capital, hanging upside down in the heavens!
It was as if a mirror dividing heaven and earth had appeared, replacing the sky with its reflection.
And within that mirror’s surface, countless figures materialized out of thin air.
There were humans—and there were Netherkin.
All of them shared one thing in common—every single one was at least of the Nascent Soul realm.
At the same time, another formation flared to life in the south of the city.
But this time, its light was tainted—thick with foul, corrupt nether energy.
