Rose’s POV

‎"Rose," my mum called softly from behind the door.

‎"open up dear, let’s talk."

‎"you haven’t left your room in two days, Rosey. What’s bothering you?"

‎With a sigh, she picked up the plates from under the door and pushed in breakfast.

‎"make sure to finish everything this time, okay? You need to eat." Her voice cracked at the end before her footsteps faded down the hall.

I stood up, dragged my body towards the door, and took the food. Even the smallest movements felt like I was carrying around a sandbag.

My heart ached seeing my mum go through this because of me, but I just wasn’t ready to step out yet.

I wanted to tell her everything, I wanted to ask her what I was supposed to do.

But how was I meant to explain that I’d let her fiancé’s son kiss me?

No...

Some things were better left buried.

I only wanted to wrap myself up with as many blankets as possible and stab pins at Reagan’s picture if I had one.

‎The mention of Reagan brought back that familiar feeling I’d been feeling for the past two days. Anger, hurt, and confusion.

‎I haven’t seen Reagan since that night. He’s sure having fun, must be one hell of a girl. My stomach seemed to growl in approval... and maybe hunger, as I stabbed meatballs with my fork, imagining it was him and shoving it into my mouth.

It didn’t help.

The food was as good as always.

I just couldn’t bring myself to enjoy it.

I’d barely swallowed one bite before I stabbed another meatball with far more force than necessary.

At this rate, the poor meatballs had suffered more than Reagan.

‎If I ever see you again, Reagan, I swear I’ll cut you into little pieces and personally hand-feed you to baby Pleco.

‎"welcome back Reagan, where have you been?"

‎"wait what?"

‎I placed my ear to the door to make sure I heard correctly.

‎I could hear voices and my mum’s giggles from downstairs accompanied by some faint discussion. I pressed my face harder against the door to maybe hear better.

‎Then I heard his voice.

‎My heart skipped.

‎"...He’s back."

My heart couldn’t seem to make up its mind.

Part of me wanted to drag him into a corner and scream at him until he admitted he was a complete piece of shit.

The other part wanted to crawl back under my blanket, lock myself in my room, and pretend I’d never heard his voice.

‎"what the fuck do I do now? Don’t you dare leave me now, my bravado. What happened to strangling him when we see him?"

‎I paced around the room anxiously, biting my fingernails and debating what to do when my reflection stopped me dead in my tracks.

‎Messy, tangled hair.

‎Sniffs.

‎Ugh, bad breath.

‎Haven’t showered in days.

‎"shit, I need a shower."

‎I couldn’t confront him looking like I’d just crawled out of a hole.

‎As much as I wanted to strangle him, I wasn’t giving him the satisfaction of seeing me like this.

‎After a quick shower, I combed out my hair and put it in a ponytail, wore loose sweatpants with a tank top, and applied some red lip stain.

I stared at myself in the mirror for a long second.

Better.

Not because I wanted to impress him.

Absolutely not.

I just refused to let the first thing Reagan saw be a crying mess with tangled hair.

If anyone was supposed to look miserable today...

It was him.

‎While waiting on it to dry, I kept imagining different scenarios, but most of them would’ve gotten me charged with unprovoked violence.

‎What do I even say?

‎"You piece of shit, you went on a date after wildly kissing me?"

‎No, that sounds like something a jealous person would say.

‎"You leave hickeys on my neck and off you go to a new target to pollinate like some bee?"

‎Nah...

‎"how dare you kiss me without my permission and leave without a trace for two days?"

‎Ah, fuck, this is hard.

‎Well, let’s just go down and see how this’ll play out.

‎Making my way down the stairs, I felt awkward for some reason. I hadn’t been downstairs in days, and the moment Reagan came back, I suddenly appeared. Hopefully they’d chalk it up to coincidence.

‎I expected a somewhat lively atmosphere, but to my surprise I couldn’t see anyone. I walked further, and that’s when I saw Mum, but no sign of Devon or Reagan.

‎At the sight of me, Mum’s face physically brightened as she rushed over to me.

‎"Aw, Rosey, you had me worried. What happened all of a sudden?"

‎I couldn’t exactly tell her the reason, so I just offered an apology.

‎"Sorry, Mum."

‎"it’s fine," she answered with a smile as she stroked my hair.

‎"come sit. Have you had your breakfast?"

‎"Yes, Mum. It was delicious, thanks."

‎"I’m glad you liked it."

‎My attention was distracted as my eyes darted around looking for someone.

‎"something the matter?"

‎Of course she’d notice.

‎"I-I’m just wondering where Devon was."

‎"oh, you could’ve just asked. He’s with Reagan."

My heartbeat picked up immediately.

Calm down.

You’re just going to tell him exactly what you think.

No crying.

No shouting.

Definitely no kissing.

I’d rehearsed this conversation a dozen times upstairs.

Now that he was actually here...

Every single word disappeared.

‎"Reagan?" I asked, putting up a face of surprise.

‎"yeah, came back not too long ago. Was starting to wonder if she wanted to kidnap him for herself," she laughed with a light laugh.

‎"speak of the devil."

‎I turned around to see Reagan and Devon walking towards us. My heart pounded frantically in my chest as I wondered what he’d say.

‎Instead, he only glanced my way briefly and kept on walking.

‎My brain took its sweet time to process it.

‎What??

‎That was it?

‎He was just... going to ignore me?
