Rose’s POV

I hurriedly prepared his meal with the intent of going to my room afterwards. After all, I didn’t like the thought of spending more than eight hours with someone I barely knew.

I turned off the stove and headed to the dining room with his plate of food, but when I got there, I found no one.

Suddenly, I heard my phone chime with a notification.

Rae — Are you done? If you are, then don’t waste your time looking for me. I’m upstairs in the guest room.

Rose — Who is this?

Rae — Come on, don’t act like that. I’m your big brother, Reagan.

Rose — How did you get my number? Better yet, when did I have your number saved? Also, me cooking wasn’t enough for you? Now you expect me to walk up there to serve you?

Rae — You ask too many questions for someone with such a tiny mouth.

"This motherfucker," I gritted.

After a long sigh, I mustered up the courage and pushed down my annoyance while telling myself to give him his food and leave. No need for chit-chat.

I headed upstairs, mentally cursing Reagan.

I can’t believe this guy. The food wasn’t even for me, yet somehow I was the one delivering it like a waitress.

When is Mum coming back? I can’t keep on with this.

"Maybe cook up your special noodle recipe," I said, imitating her voice.

He wasn’t the tattooed delinquent I imagined. He’s worse.

Just met me and you’re making me serve food, I thought, grumbling all the way to the door.

As I arrived at his door, I debated just leaving the food at the door and walking off but thought better of it. I knocked, heard no answer, and knocked again. Still no answer.

I was about to leave but decided to enter the room without a "Come in."

As I entered and took a few more steps in, I surveyed the room.

He was nowhere to be found...

But before I knew it, his bathroom door opened and he walked out wearing only boxer shorts, his body still wet as droplets of water ran down his chest.

"Oh my God, dude, put on some clothes!" I said, quickly turning my head to the side.

"I didn’t say you could come in," he chuckled, drying his hair with a towel.

"You literally just texted me to come up. And that was only a few minutes ago!" I emphasized, turning my face to meet his.

His body greeted me first before I could utter more as his boxer shorts clung to his—

I turned away quickly, shutting my eyes.

"Is there a problem?" he chuckled, stepping closer.

"Quit asking dumb questions and take your food."

"Quite rude, don’t you think? I mean, I am older."

"You’re red. One would think you’re the one who just stepped out of a hot shower, not me," he said, eyeing me with amusement.

"Older and still needing his food served to him like some toddler," I shot back.

Tsk.

"Did you just tsk at me?"

"Done drooling?" he asked.

"Wait, drool over you?!" I nearly screeched.

"Don’t say such silly things."

I had more things to say, but he came closer, practically caging me in.

"W-what the fuck are you doing? This is—"

"This is what?" he interrupted, seeming to enjoy the situation he had put me in.

"Weird. This is weird," I shouted, pushing against him and trying to put some distance between us.

"Weird? Or are you the one having weird thoughts? What were you thinking about, hmm?" he questioned, not even trying to hide how amused he was.

I didn’t like how putting me in such an uncomfortable situation seemed to entertain him.

"I’ve done what I’m supposed to. I brought the food up. Choke on it," I said, flipping him off and storming out.

Reagan’s POV

I’d seen Rose so many times in photos provided to me, but when I finally saw her in person, she wasn’t what I expected.

‎The way she’d cross her arms or challenge me without a care in the world...

I laughed, running a hand through my hair.

Interesting.

Not such a bad feeling, having someone not immediately scared of me for once.

I hadn’t imagined anything special before meeting Rose, but if I had, there wouldn’t have been any scenario where I’d find her behavior amusing.

Maybe this arrangement would turn from being a chore into something bearable.

It’s nighttime, and Rose should probably be in her room.

It’s time to do what I came here for.

I need to check every nook and cranny of this house.

I’ll start with his study. Maybe there’ll be names, receipts, hidden paperwork, anything.

How had he been doing it?

A secret passage?

‎An underground path?

How’d he store it all without getting caught

The attic?

I needed answers.

Walking downstairs, I was surprised to find Rose in the living room, sitting on the couch with her eyes glued to the screen.

Fuck. This ruins things.

I cursed.

Maybe later.

‎I’ll wait till she goes to bed.

‎I couldn’t do what I’d originally come down to do, so I decided to join her instead.

As I tapped her on the back, she jerked slightly, looking startled before quickly turning angry.

"You scared me!"

‎I gave no reply and simply sat down.

"Jerk."

‎I turned to look at her.

"Did you say something?"

"Not only a jerk but deaf too?" she said with fake surprise, comically widening her eyes.

Might as well.

A second later—

"What the fuck was that?" she asked, clutching her chest.

"Just showing you how much of a jerk I am."

"I thought you were about to hit me," she said, still clutching her chest.

"Fuck this. I’m going back to my room. You have the whole living room to yourself," she huffed.

"Okay then. After you make me some tea."

"What?" she asked, slowly turning her head to face me.

"I said I need some tea," I repeated with a smirk.

"The nerve!" she shrieked, pointing a remote at me like a weapon.
