Rose’s POV

"Mum, isn’t there a way around it? Like maybe tow it or something?"

"The car isn’t faulty, Rose. The snow is blocking the road. No towing needed," she laughed lightly.

"So you can’t come back till it clears a bit?" I asked, still hoping that wasn’t the case.

"Unfortunately, yes. But on the bright side, I get to spend more time with Devon’s parents, and you and Reagan get to have the house to yourselves. Get to know each other and hang out."

I could imagine how stretched her face was from smiling. I knew she was happy.

"Yay me," I said sarcastically.

"Oh, come on, dear. You’ve been an only child all your life, so it might be hard to adjust, but I promise you it’ll be fun if you open up and accept it," she said warmly.

"Yeah, yeah, sure."

"Rose," she warned half-heartedly.

"Ugh, fine, Mum. I’ll try to accept the annoying new addition to the family."

"What will I do with you?" she laughed, exasperated.

"How’s your meeting with his parents? Are they nice?"

"Oh dear, you wouldn’t believe how good of a cook his mum is..."

We talked for a while longer until my mum had other things to attend to.

The call ended, but I didn’t move. I just stared at the screen until it went dark. Mum sounded so happy. I wanted to be happy with her, I really did. Maybe I was. It was just... everything had changed so suddenly, and I hadn’t caught up yet.

Well, one good thing was I hadn’t seen Reagan since his call earlier.

Must’ve gone to beg his girlfriend not to break up with him, I thought, snickering.

Good. Let him spend all his time with her. Less time annoying me.

He doesn’t have the best character, but his body isn’t half bad. Girl, just enjoy the eye candy and forget about his shitty attitude.

What am I talking about? He’s my soon-to-be stepbrother. I said, tapping my cheeks.

His weird attitude is beginning to rub off on me.

I need to clear my head. Maybe go out?

If anyone could distract me from all this, it was Sierra. I quickly dialed her number.

"Thank God you came, Sierra, " I said, walking out of a store.

"Why wouldn’t I have? I needed to leave home anyway," she replied.

"Spill it. How is he?"

"Tsk. Annoying as hell," I answered, rolling my eyes.

"Forget about that. You know what I’m asking for," she said, wiggling her brows naughtily.

"Detail bomb me and leave out nothing."

"I wanted to clear my head, not still think about him."

"Still?" she asked, looking at me pointedly.

"That dress looks pretty," I said, running off.

"Don’t you dare avoid my question!" she shouted, running after me.

"You sly bitch. You’ve been avoiding my questions all day, dragging me from one store to the other," she said, sipping her coffee.

"I have no idea what you’re talking about," I responded, extra focused on my food.

"There’s something going on, isn’t there?"

Smart ass, I groaned internally.

"I don’t know what to feel, actually. It’s not like I’m not happy for my mum, but at the same time it’s all too fast to process, and Reagan..." I stopped with a sigh.

"Reagan?" she asked, wanting me to continue.

"He’s just too much."

"Or you’re just too dull?" she smirked.

"Fuck you. I’m not saying anything anymore," I faked anger.

"Sorry, sorry. Tell me more," she said, laughing.

"I don’t know how to put it, but he just makes me want to put my guard up. I can’t put my finger on it. Aside from the fact that he’s only been annoying since we’ve met... honestly, I’m just rambling, aren’t I?" I asked, picking at my food.

"Is he hot?"

"What?" I paused.

"Is he hot?" she repeated.

"Why would you ask that of all things?"

"That’ll explain things. I mean, from all you’ve said, aside from the whole ’too fast’ situation, he hasn’t really done anything hate-worthy."

"You’ve been homeschooled all your life, barely have friends—no offense, babe—and you’ve never truly interacted with a guy," she finished.

"First of all, all offense taken. And secondly... shit." I covered my face with the menu.

"Something wrong?" Sierra asked, confused.

"Bow your head. Cover your face. Anything."

"Why?"

"He’s here. Reagan is here."

"Oh really?" she asked, turning around to spot him even though she had no idea what he looked like.

"Fuck, Sierra! What are you looking for?"

"Shush."

"He’s gone," I said, lifting my head.

"Really? When? The only person I saw leaving was—wait... that was him?" she squealed, fanning herself dramatically.

"So what?" I asked, raising a brow.

"No wonder you’re so uncomfortable. If I was under the same roof with a stud like that, I wouldn’t know how to act either."

"Sierra!" I yelped.

"Fine, fine," she said, dropping it for now.

Who was the girl on his arm?

The caller earlier this morning, maybe?

Why did I even care? It wasn’t like we were friends. We barely tolerated each other. If anything, I should’ve been relieved he had someone else to bother.

An emotion bubbled up that I couldn’t decipher.

Not my business, I told myself, forcing a brave face.

After my outing with my best friend and saying our goodbyes, I returned home, subtly hoping that Reagan would be back.

It was my first time realizing how really big the house was.

It lacked life.

Even my footsteps sounded louder than usual. A few days ago, I would’ve loved having the entire house to myself. Now it just felt... empty.

Maybe Mum was right.

"No," I muttered to myself.

"She definitely wasn’t."

...

"Probably."

Maybe I do need a sibling.

I had already drifted off to sleep when I heard sounds downstairs.

My eyes snapped open immediately as I shot up from the bed.

A burglar?

That’s never happened before, so why now, when I’m home alone?

I didn’t turn on the light in order not to attract attention, so I felt around my room until my hands landed on a badminton racket.

I slowly descended the stairs, hearing the noise drawing closer.

Every step made my heart pound even more. I held my breath, tightening my grip around the badminton racket until my fingers hurt.

Sure I was close to whoever it was, I swung hard.

"Fuck!" the person exclaimed.

That sounded like...

Reagan?
