Rose’s POV

I clutched my hand, my mind blank and my eyes unblinking as my feet led me to my room. I still couldn’t process what had just happened.

"Did he just...?" I managed to say.

My mind replayed the scene over and over, making my face grow hotter each time.

The world seemed to freeze for a moment as his eyes stared directly into mine while he called my name. Why would he call my name out of all the things he could have said?! I screamed mentally.

I could still feel it. I could still feel the vibration in his throat as he held my hand against it. His hand was a bit rough, covered mine entirely, and his palm was warm and comforting. In that little moment, from that little touch, I felt grounded.

But what could’ve made him do that? What led to that moment? I asked myself as I racked my brain, trying to remember.

Oh...

I told him he was faking his voice.

But that wasn’t the best way to prove it. Covering my face with my hands, I let myself fall onto the bed.

I can’t believe he did that, and I used such a stupid excuse to leave. Oh my goodness, how will I face him now? I know he loved seeing me at a loss for words for once. That fucking prick.

"Wash the blush off," he said.

Why the fuck would he say that? I’m so embarrassed right now.

But why is this affecting me so much? My hands are twitchy, and my body feels hot and tingly. What sort of feeling is this?

It’s an uncomfortable feeling. It makes me want... something, though I don’t even know what.

I need to distract myself.

Some time later, I heard his footsteps and the sound of his door closing. I waited a little while to see if he would come out again.

"I guess he’s asleep."

I tiptoed across the floor, making as little noise as possible, and walked to where I had found Reagan that morning. Aside from the rattling experience at breakfast, my mind had been unsettled, so I decided to scratch the itch and make sure it was sealed properly.

I ran my fingers over the button and let the feeling of familiarity wash over me. Before opening it, I looked around to make sure I wasn’t being watched or that Reagan hadn’t magically appeared beside me. Satisfied that no one was around, I quickly operated it and rushed inside.

As I looked around, I was surprised to see it wasn’t as dusty as I’d imagined, even though I hadn’t been here in a long time. The air, however, was a bit thick.

I looked around the place as memories flooded back. My eyes watered a little, but I quickly wiped them. After spending a few more moments reminiscing, I peeked through the exit again to make sure Reagan hadn’t come downstairs and spotted me. Once I was sure, I shut it quietly and walked away.

Reagans POV

The way she ran off... it was quite amusing to watch. I didn’t know why, but it made me want to tease her more and watch her reactions.

Her face is so easy to read. It paints exactly how she’s feeling for everyone to see.

Fuck, what’s happening to me?

I paused, catching myself as I pinched the bridge of my nose.

I’m here for a purpose, but instead I’m playing house with Rose. I let her talk to me the way she does, and I even find it somewhat cute?

Hah... I’m losing it.

Even when she dragged me away, I let her.

Wait... that brings me back.

Her expression when she saw me standing there with my hand on the wall... the way she panicked... how she avoided my eyes during breakfast...

What was she hiding?

I hope Rose isn’t a part of what’s going on because it’s bigger than she could imagine.

Wait...

Hope?

Fuck.

I’m just worried, that’s all.

Wait...

Worried?

That wasn’t any better.

I need to find what I came here for and leave before I go crazy.

I need a fucking drink.

Just as I reached for my door, I heard Rose’s open. There were no footsteps, so I decided to open mine as well.

I didn’t know what I was expecting to see, but it definitely wasn’t her tiptoeing down the hallway with her back arched. I caught myself smiling as she cartoonishly crept along.

If she chose a different career path, she’d be deadly.

The moment she straightened her posture again, I planned to go get that drink, but curiosity got the better of me. Wherever she was going, I wanted to know.

So I followed silently behind her.

Here again?

Why’s she back here?

My eyes followed every movement of her hands as she expertly worked the hidden mechanism. Just before she unlocked it, she looked around in every direction, forcing me to duck out of sight.

Whatever was inside...

She didn’t want anyone—especially me—to know about it.

I couldn’t follow her in, so I stayed hidden, watching to see if she’d bring anything back out.

She was gone for quite a while.

When she finally emerged, her eyes looked slightly teary, but her hands were empty.

She looked around one last time before walking away.

Once I was certain she was completely gone, I stepped over to where she’d been standing and rested my hand on the hidden button.

Still warm...

My gaze drifted from the mechanism to the corridor she’d disappeared down.

What are you hiding, Rose?
