Chapter 66: Chapter 66
With Marek’s new-found understanding of my control, he leapt over the threshold that held his control. He landed on paws on the other side of the invisible barrier, darting into the forest before any of us could stop him.
Jax, who had full control over his transformations, dropped into his wolf form with ease before chasing after him. I was pulled towards them, jogging in their direction before Grayson gripped into my upper arm.
"Let them go," he told me and I stepped back involuntarily.
My lips pursed as I stared at the empty space they had just been. An argument was taking root.
"They’ll be back," he reassured and let go of my arm.
Returning to the rapidly growing fire, he slumped against a log. He stretched out his legs and leaned back, relaxing into his position to enjoy the lack of responsibility.
I studied where they had left, contemplating what to do. Deciding, I took a long, drawn out breath.
As much as I wanted to follow Marek and Jax, I knew it wouldn’t turn out well for me as a small human with no tracking skills and a possessive alpha controlling my every move.
I would have to wait, trusting Grayson that they would return. I just hated how indifferent he felt towards Marek’s inner turmoil.
Sitting next to Grayson, alone in the charming ambiance of the setting sun and crackling fire, I pressed my leg against his for comfort and connection. My life had become so complicated in the time I’d spent on the island and my thoughts bounced around each resident of our secluded world.
Grayson’s hand fell on my thigh, rubbing inward in an attempt to distract me from myself.
"You think too much," he said behind closed lids and relaxed features.
How was I the one with the crinkled face while he lay there looking ready for a nap. I spread my annoyance through our bond and he peaked an eye at me.
"You worry too much too."
"Well, there’s a lot to worry about," I chided.
A single chuckle came out. "You got you’re Marek back, you should be rejoicing."
"Got him back? Then where is he?" The cadence of my voice rising in agitation.
"He’s out running around with Jax while still stuck in his werewolf form because of me," I answered my own questions.
"Julien is still hiding out there all alone, Dominic is probably planning some evil ploy to kill us all. And these damn clothes, that I created, still won’t budge!"
I pulled at the shorts, feeling the pinch of my hands against the immovable fabric. He grabbed my leg, and suddenly pulling me sideways, slid me underneath him as he rolled on top of me in a motion that was too quick for my mind to register.
He pressed against me from above, his groin leaning into where my hands had just been. I was pinned beneath him, locked under the scrutiny of his attention. His mouth was only an inch from mine as he stared down into my wide eyes.
"You talk too much too."
A cocky grin curled on his lips and I caught myself staring at them, completely distracted from my thoughts. I opened my mouth trying to remember what I was complaining about when his mouth fell on mine.
The world fell away as he kissed me, lust growing as the heat between us spread. Every time we touched, energy surged through us. Not from my power but something more ethereal and inevitable like we belonged in each others arms.
"Get a room," came Jax’s voice.
Grayson broke our kiss, pressing his head against my collar bone for a moment before moving to his feet.
"Always something..." was muttered under his breath as he left me lying on the ground, frozen by the whiplash of the moment.
My neck crooned up to see if Jax was alone. To my relief, Marek was at his side, already in his human form as he approached the butcher table with a deer dragging behind him. It’s throat had been ripped out and sickness filled my stomach, causing me to look away in disgust.
I didn’t understand how they could take the lives of such innocent creatures without a care so easily, especially Jax who would go out of his way to help an animal in need. I shivered at the fear that took hold over the beasts that inhabited them.
Pulling myself into a seated position against the log, I let myself calm down with even breathes. A headache formed at the excitement of the day and all I wanted to do now was rest.
Jax jumped over the log and slinked into place beside me. His happy face grinned as he displayed offerings of fruit and a green spiked leaf that tasted peppery and almost spicy. It was as though he could read my thoughts and I leaned my head against his shoulder, hoping he never changed from who he was now.
The night dipped around us and the light of the fire grew brighter with the contrast. Marek brought chunks of meat over after setting up his contraption over the fire. He grilled the meat in steak-like portions, handing them out on our customized dishes.
Marek had brought his own, the ML engraved on its side barely visible in the charred wood. Jax sat up, taking his share and devouring it whole. I reluctantly took mine as well, the hunger of the day that only consisted of packed snacks, pulling me towards the smell of food.
With all of us sitting around the fire, enjoying our meal in silence, it wasn’t long until Jax began talking. Questions for Marek tangled with his own stories, his train of thought hopping tracks before reaching any station.
Soon, things felt normal again. The place was different, the leader was different, and Julien’s poetry still left a gap.
But the banter between Jax and Marek made me feel hopeful. Even Grayson’s scowl had softened as he watched them. For one steady thrum, the tightness in my chest loosened. Maybe we could actually make this work.
