She had heard about the locomotive for weeks before she ever actually saw it up close, a lava-powered engine, apparently, running steady service through a tunnel she still hadn't fully wrapped her head around. Petrov had promised her a proper look once the schedule allowed, and today, finally, it had. She showed up with her vivid red curls tied back under a faded bandana, sleeves already rolled to the elbow out of pure habit, looking, Petrov privately thought, like she'd walked directly out of a wartime recruitment poster and straight onto a maintenance platform.
"...This is Buzzy," he said, gesturing at the gleaming, red-black locomotive sitting idle at the maintenance platform, cab open, access panels already pulled for a routine inspection. "Sixteen hundred kilometers each way, twice daily, hasn't missed a run yet."
She circled the machine slowly, professional instinct already kicking in, eyes tracking pipe joints, seals, the general shape of a pressure system she was still learning the specifics of.
"...Lava-fired, you said." She crouched near the front housing, studying the exterior plating with open curiosity. "Direct contact, or is there insulation between the heat source and the actual boiler?"
"Direct basin, up front," Petrov said, pulling the relevant access panel open for her. "Water chamber sits closer to the cab. Dividing wall between them does the actual heat transfer."
She leaned in, examining the interior lining through the open panel, and went very still.
"...Is that the same stone from the canal linings? Down in Ashfall Reaches?"
"Canal stone, yes," Petrov confirmed. "Strawberry's choice, originally Beelzebub's suggestion, actually. From what I understand, she'd gotten thoroughly stuck trying to find a metal that wouldn't simply melt on contact, and he pointed out the obvious answer was already sitting under half the city."
She ran a careful hand along the lining's edge, genuinely delighted now, the specific delight of a specialist encountering someone else's competent work in her own field. "...That's exactly right, actually. Natural geological heat resistance, already proven at civic scale, no exotic processing required. Considerably smarter than trying to engineer a metal solution from scratch." She glanced up at him. "She actually knew what she was doing here. Or he did. Possibly both."
"Usually both, from what I've gathered," Petrov said, dry. "She provides the ambition. Various other people provide the part where it doesn't immediately fail."
She moved to the dividing wall next, running her fingers along the exposed edge of the canal-stone lining, and paused.
"...You've thinned the stone here."
"Deliberate," Petrov said. "Too thick and it insulates the boiler instead of heating it. Too thin and enough heat reaches the metal backing to damage it. Apparently this was the thickness Strawberry settled on after testing."
She nodded slowly. "...So the stone isn't just containing the lava here. It's acting as a controlled thermal barrier." She tapped the metal wall behind it. "Enough resistance to keep this alive. Enough conductivity to still boil what's on the other side."
"That's the working theory, yes."
"...How exactly did she land on this specific thickness? There's no clean formula for something like this, not without knowing the exact thermal properties of canal stone under sustained lava contact, which I doubt anyone's ever actually measured before."
Petrov considered the question for a moment, then simply shrugged. "From what I understand, she tried several prototypes. Too thick, water barely warmed at all. Slightly thinner, better. Thinner still, better again." He tapped the current wall. "This one."
"And how did she know to stop here specifically?"
"The one after this," Petrov said, entirely matter-of-fact, "the metal backing started glowing. Ominously, apparently, by her own description."
She blinked. "...She kept a previous one."
"I believe her exact words, upon seeing the glow, were 'previous one.' Immediately. No further testing conducted on that particular prototype."

She studied the metal backing a moment longer, something still nagging at her, one loose curl escaping the bandana as she leaned in closer. "...Why the metal plate at all, though? If she just needed thinner stone for better heat transfer, why not simply cut the stone thinner everywhere and leave it at that?"
"Canal stone weakens under sustained water exposure, apparently," Petrov said. "Something about its structure. Fine against lava indefinitely, considerably less fine once water's involved. The metal backing isn't there for heat transfer at all. It's there so the thinned stone doesn't quietly fail out from under her three months into service."
"...So it's solving two completely separate problems that happen to sit on top of each other," she said slowly. "Thickness for heat balance. Metal for structural integrity against water specifically."
"That does appear to be the case, yes."
She moved to the next section, studying the basin's overall proportions with a practiced eye, mentally estimating volume against what she already knew about the locomotive's daily range.
"...This tank's considerably larger than it needs to be for a single run," she said slowly, working through the logic out loud. "Even accounting for the longest route."
"Deliberate," Petrov said. "Ask her about it sometime, she'll talk your ear off happily."
"No, I think I've got it." She tapped the basin's lower edge, tracing the drainage valve's position. "It's not just fuel reserve. If the lava cooled all the way down to the minimum useful threshold, it'd thicken too much to drain properly at the other end. Keeping it oversized means there's always enough residual heat left at journey's end to still flow cleanly out through this valve." She looked genuinely pleased with herself, working it out unprompted, wiping a smear of grease off one knuckle without much concern for the effort. "That's not overengineering. That's accounting for viscosity at the tail end of the cycle."
Petrov raised an eyebrow, impressed despite himself. "...You got that just from looking at it?"
"It's a fluid dynamics problem," she said, matter-of-fact. "I look at flow behavior for a living. This is just an unusually hot version of a problem I already understand."
She moved to the water chamber next, examining the sealed piping with the same careful attention. "...This isn't venting anywhere. Where does the spent steam actually go?"
"Closed loop," Petrov said. "Condenses back to water, cycles through again."
Her whole posture shifted, something like genuine professional excitement breaking through her usual measured calm. "...That's a condensing system. Do you have any idea how much water that saves over an open-vent design? I've seen the consumption estimates for standard steam systems this size. This is doing the same job on a fraction of the onboard supply."
"I did not know that until just now," Petrov admitted. "I mostly handle scheduling, not thermodynamics."
"It's elegant," she said, crouching to trace the return line back toward the boiler, thoroughly absorbed now. "Whoever's actually resupplying this thing, at the stations, presumably, they're just handling lava exchange. The water side barely needs touching."
"Gravity feed," Petrov said. "Drain valve underneath empties directly into the return pool. Fresh lava comes from the canal overhead through a gated funnel. No pumps, no lifting."
She looked up toward the heavy stone channel running above the platform, then down toward the drain beneath the locomotive.
"...So the station is effectively a fuel system."
"Apparently Strawberry's exact reasoning was that pumping lava sounded like an excellent way to invent several new problems."
"What was the original plan, before this?" she asked, genuinely curious now. "There's no way she landed on a self-contained, refillable basin on the first attempt."
Petrov considered the question. "From what I understand, the earliest version of the idea assumed she'd need to stay near natural lava sources continuously, routing the whole line to hug proximity to active pools, accepting weaker sections wherever the route had to drift too far from one. Turned out to be a considerably worse constraint than just carrying enough thermal mass to make the whole question irrelevant."
"So she gave up trying to chase the heat source and just brought the heat source with her instead."
"That does appear to be the general pattern with most of her solutions, yes."
She stood, brushing off her hands, bandana slightly askew now, studying the whole assembled machine with open, genuine respect.
"...I came in expecting a novelty," she admitted. "Lava-powered train, sure, sounds impressive, probably held together by enthusiasm more than sound engineering. This isn't that. This is someone who actually understood the failure modes before they built the thing, not after."
"That's rather her whole reputation, from what I've gathered," Petrov said. "Though I admit the failures usually happen first, loudly, before the understanding catches up."
She huffed something that might have been a laugh. "...I'd still like to meet her properly. Whoever designed this."
"You will," Petrov said. "She's usually around somewhere. Probably off negotiating something ambitious with the Lord of Hell himself, knowing her."
She blinked. "...The actual—"
"The actual Lord of Hell," Petrov confirmed, entirely matter-of-fact, already closing the access panel back into place. "You'll meet him eventually too. Interesting individual. Rode this very locomotive as its first passenger, actually, snuck aboard without her noticing and revealed himself at the platform. First time anyone here saw him in anything resembling a human shape."
She looked back at the locomotive, at the canal-stone-lined basin, the closed-loop water chamber, the whole careful, deliberate engineering she'd just spent the better part of an hour admiring, red curls still escaping the bandana no matter how many times she tucked them back.
"...I have several follow-up questions," she said. "About the lava specifically. And possibly about the Lord of Hell."
"Strawberry's better equipped for the second question," Petrov said, grinning. "I can help with the first."
