The room dropped into silence.
The subtle barb struck Anastasia right in the center of her chest.
She froze, the air leaving her lungs in a quiet, painful hitch. She knew exactly what he was referencing... the anonymous tips, the fabricated rumors, and the tragic misunderstanding four years ago that had led her to believe Damian had brought a mistress home, ultimately triggering their bitter divorce.
A deep, stinging ache settled behind Ana’s ribs. She gripped her teacup tightly, lowering her eyes to the dark liquid to hide the sudden burn of unshed tears.
Even here, surrounded by warmth and safety, the scars of their broken past were never truly buried.
Victoria frowned, shooting Damian a sharp, warning glance from the hearth. "Damian, that is quite enough..."
"No," Anastasia cut in quietly.
Her voice wasn’t loud, but it possessed a cold, cutting clarity that instantly silenced the room.
Ana slowly set her teacup down on the table with a sharp, deliberate clink. She turned her head, looking Damian straight in his dark, unyielding eyes.
The hurt in her chest hardened into a flicker of pure, defensive fire, refusing to let him sit there as if he has done absolutely nothing.
"None of this would have happened," Ana said, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed venom, "if you hadn’t brought her into our lives in the first place."
The room plunged into a suffocating, breathless stillness.
Damian’s jaw locked, the teacup halting halfway to his lips as his obsidian eyes hardened into black ice, the raw blow landing squarely where it was meant to hurt.
The clinking of porcelain against glass echoed like a gunshot in the cavernous drawing room.
Victoria closed her mouth. Valerie drew in a frightened breath, freezing on the edge of her armchair as the heavy, oppressive tension rolled off Damian’s rigid frame.
Damian lowered his cup back onto the saucer with agonizing slowness. He didn’t blink. His obsidian eyes hardened into black ice.
"Is that how you remember it, Anastasia?" Damian asked, his tone dangerously quiet, stripped of all warmth. "You think I brought her in?"
"I told you, Damian!"
Ana’s voice trembled, but she refused to back down, the dam finally breaking after years of buried resentment.
"I came to you so many times. I told you she was vicious to me, that every word out of her mouth was venom, that she was crossing lines she had no right to cross. And what did you do? You brushed me off. You acted like I was being paranoid."
She leaned forward, her chest heaving as tears of sheer frustration burned behind her eyes.
"You let her walk into our home like she owned it. You let her stand beside you at galas, you gave her room to believe she could actually replace me, and you never once drew a line to protect me from her! So yes... it is your fault she is in our lives!"
"Anastasia, please..." Valerie attempted softly, raising a trembling hand to intervene. "Damian didn’t mean..."
"Quiet, Valerie," Damian commanded coldly, his eyes never leaving Ana’s face.
He leaned in, his imposing shadow completely engulfing her. A bitter, ruthless edge crept into his voice. "And all you had to do was be quiet and not act on it."
Ana looked at him in disbelief, a sharp gasp escaping her throat.
"For me, Vivian Stark was nothing more than a minor pawn in a multi-billion-dollar corporate takeover," Damian stated, his tone mercilessly pragmatic. "When I told you to ignore whatever she said, I meant exactly that. I had the board, the Stark shares, and their entire lineage cornered. But instead of trusting the plan, you suddenly woke up one day, threw a tantrum, and demanded a divorce."
"Damian Sterling, that is enough!" Victoria’s voice cracked across the room like a whip, stepping sharply away from the hearth. "You will not speak to your wife this way..."
"Everything I spent years tactically assembling fell apart the second you walked out."
Damian pressed on, completely ignoring his mother, his jaw tight as his voice dropped to a furious rasp.
"Vivian and her pathetic father would have been wiped out of our lives years ago. But where did my attention go? Where did my focus shift? Toward keeping you breathing. Do you have any idea how many resources, how much manpower, and how much time were completely wasted over those two years just cleaning up the fallout of your rebellion?"
A horrifying, dead stillness gripped the room.
Ana stared at him, feeling every ounce of warmth drain from her body. The man sitting beside her wasn’t looking at her as a wife he loved; he was looking at her like a catastrophic balance-sheet liability he had been forced to manage.
The sheer cruelty of his cold, calculating logic pierced straight through her ribs, shattering whatever fragile peace they had rebuilt.
"A rebellion?" Ana whispered, a bitter, broken laugh escaping her lips. "Is that what my pain was to you? A waste of your precious resources?"
She stood up abruptly, her knees shaking, but her chin held high as a single, burning tear tracked down her pale cheek.
"It would have been better if you had never married me in the first place," Ana said, her voice dropping into a devastating, crystal-clear whisper that cut deeper than any shout. "I hate you, Damian."
Without waiting for a response, she turned on her heel and strode toward the heavy double doors, leaving the drawing room behind.
"Anastasia, wait!" Valerie cried out, rushing after her into the hallway.
Victoria remained standing by the fire, her face pale with profound shock and cold disappointment. She turned slowly toward her son, her regal posture stiff with absolute fury.
"You fool," Victoria said, her voice shaking with quiet disgust as she looked at Damian. "You brilliant, blind fool."
Damian sat alone on the velvet sofa, his hands clenched into white-knuckled fists, staring into the roaring fire as the suffocating silence closed in around him.

The door of the guest suite clicked shut, muffling the tense silence of the grand estate.
Ana leaned back against the door, her chest rising and falling in shallow, jagged breaths. The venom in Damian’s voice still rang in her ears, each calculated word echoing like a slap. A waste of resources. A rebellion.
A soft knock sounded on the panel behind her.
"Ana? Please, it’s me."
Ana hesitated for a fraction of a second before pulling the door open. Valerie stood in the hallway, her face pale, eyes red-rimmed and filled with a desperate, remorseful ache. Without waiting for an invitation, Valerie stepped inside and closed the door softly behind her.
"I am so sorry, Ana," Valerie whispered, her hands knotting together. "The things he said out there... they were cruel. Unforgivable. But please, you have to know he’s running completely on adrenaline and paranoia right now."
Ana turned away, walking toward the tall, arched window overlooking the dark coastal woods of Northwood. A bitter, humorless laugh escaped her throat. "Paranoia? No, Valerie. That was the most honest Damian has been with me in four years. I was never a partner to him. I was just a liability he couldn’t keep on his leash."
"That isn’t true."
Valerie said, hurrying across the plush rug to stand near her.
"Damian doesn’t know how to speak to anyone without sounding like an executioner. Ever since... ever since Dad committed suicide, Damian completely locked himself away. He built walls so high neither Mom nor I could reach him. He barely called us, barely saw us. It was like he decided, right then, that he had to fight the entire world completely on his own."
Valerie’s voice broke, thick with years of buried guilt.
"And it’s partially our fault, Ana. When he brought you home, Mom and I were furious. You were a Vance. The daughter of the family Dad blamed before everything fell apart. We iced him out, we hated the marriage, and we made your life impossible. But we accept you now... we truly do... because we saw what happened to him without you. We saw how much he loves you."
Valerie reached out, placing a gentle, imploring hand on Ana’s arm.
"Those two years after you walked out... Damian lost his mind, Ana. He didn’t sleep. He stopped eating. He tore through his entire corporate empire like a madman, rerouting millions and burning through endless security details just to keep an invisible wall around you every second of the day. He was obsessed with your survival because losing you was the only thing capable of breaking him."
Ana didn’t move. She stared out into the pitch-black night, feeling the cold glass beneath her fingertips. The revelation didn’t bring warmth or comfort; it only deepened the hollow, suffocating ache in her ribs.
Slowly, she pulled her arm away from Valerie’s touch and turned to face her, her expression flat, devoid of tears, and devastatingly cold.
"Damian never married me because he was in love with me, Valerie," Ana said, her voice dropping to a quiet, lethal register. "In fact, he never ever cared about me."
Valerie’s breath caught in her throat. "Ana, that’s not..."
"He looked through me from the day we signed the papers to the day I left," Ana continued, her voice steady and relentless. "I was a contract. A piece of leverage against my father. A piece of Vance territory he acquired to settle his father’s vendetta. He controlled me, he managed me, and he monitored me like an asset in a vault. But he was never really with me. Not for a single second of that marriage."
Valerie stared at her in stunned, breathless horror. "Ana... what are you talking about? A contract..."
"That’s enough, Valerie."
The low, lethal tone sliced through the bedroom like shattered glass.
Valerie flinched, spinning toward the entrance.
Damian stood framed in the heavy doorway, his towering silhouette casting a long, suffocating shadow across the floorboards.
His suit jacket was gone, his dark dress shirt unbuttoned at the throat, his posture carrying the rigid, terrifying stillness of a predator cornered in his own domain.
His eyes went past his sister entirely, locking squarely onto Anastasia with a cold, terrifying intensity that promised pure ruin.
Every word... every hidden clause of the agreement he had spent four years ruthlessly burying from his family and the world... hung bare and exposed in the air between them.
"Leave us," Damian commanded, his gaze never wavering from Ana’s defiant face. "Now."
