The grand kitchen of Northwood was quiet in the early morning light, the gold rays of dawn stretching across the polished marble floors.
The rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm toasted sourdough filled the space as Anastasia stood by the counter, quietly portioning out a light, nutrient-dense breakfast tailored to aid muscle recovery.
A soft, barefoot step sounded against the hardwood behind her.
Before Ana could turn, a towering, broad frame moved into her space, trapping her neatly against the edge of the marble island.
Damian stood directly behind her... bare-chest, stark white medical gauze wrapping his left shoulder and sweeping down his lower back. He was moving on his own two feet, entirely free of the wheelchair, his presence radiating an unyielding, territorial heat.
"Up early, little doll," his deep, gravelly morning voice murmured right against the shell of her ear.
His uninjured right arm reached past her waist, resting flat on the cold marble counter, casually caging her in with effortless authority. The clean scent of cedarwood, slate, and fresh antiseptic rolled off his skin, surrounding her senses completely.
Ana’s pulse gave a sharp flutter, but she maintained her composure. She poured a steaming mug of black coffee and slid it into his waiting palm, casting a pointed, critical look at his bandaged torso.
"You’re supposed to be in bed resting, Mr. Sterling," she said, her voice smooth with dry defiance. "Not wandering around the estate half-naked looking for trouble."
A slow, wicked smirk curved Damian’s lips. He took a measured sip of the dark brew, his hooded obsidian eyes locking onto hers with lazy, dangerous amusement. "Trouble is the only thing keeping my blood moving."
The quiet, domestic heat lingering between them was abruptly cut short by the sharp click of dress shoes echoing down the corridor.
Walter appeared at the kitchen threshold, an encrypted tablet held firmly in his hand. His weathered face was tight, completely stripped of its usual stoic calm.
"Pardon the intrusion, Boss," Walter stated, his voice low and urgent. "We have a critical development in the capital."
Damian didn’t step away from Anastasia, but his teasing smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a sharp, calculating edge. "Report."
"Dante Sullivan has shifted tactics to the open market," Walter explained, holding up the screen. "Since his men failed to secure Miss Vance physically, his proxy corporations have initiated an aggressive, hostile freeze on all Vance commercial logistics, shipping hubs, and real estate holdings in the city. He is systematically choking her family’s remaining corporate assets to force an immediate legal surrender."
Anastasia went entirely still, a cold, heavy knot settling in her stomach as she stared at the flashing red alerts and crashing financial tickers on the display.
Damian took the tablet with his right hand, his dark eyes scanning the cascading liquidations and asset seizures. Instead of anger, a slow, chilling chuckle rumbled in his broad chest... dark, sharp, and dripping with cruel, unadulterated satisfaction.
"Poetic," Damian murmured, his baritone smooth and unbothered as he watched the Vance empire get torn apart in real time. "Your father and his board spent twenty years living like kings after framing my father for their own corporate embezzlement. Watching Dante bleed them dry on the open market is the cleanest piece of divine retribution I’ve seen in a decade."
Ana’s throat tightened. She knew the dark, unforgivable history between their fathers, but the raw reality of her family’s complete destruction hung starkly in the air.
Damian set the tablet down onto the marble with a solid, echoing thud. He turned slightly, his towering frame cutting off the rest of the kitchen as his large hand came up to cup the side of her neck, his thumb tilting her chin upward until her dark eyes were forced to meet his unyielding gaze.
All traces of cruel humor had vanished from his carved features, replaced by a raw, suffocating possessiveness.
"Let your family choke on the dirt Dante is burying them in. They earned every single bit of their ruin," Damian rasped, his obsidian eyes burning straight into hers. "Dante thinks wiping them out will leave you desperate enough to run into his hands. But he made one fatal mistake."
"What mistake?" Ana whispered, her breath hitching under the fierce intensity of his grip.
"He forgot who holds the deed to your life," Damian whispered, his voice dipping into a low, lethal promise. "Your corrupt family can burn to ash for all I care. But not a single hair on your head... and not a single penny of your grandfather’s trust... is ever going to his hands."
Ana held his dark, suffocating gaze for a long second before letting out a slow, composed breath. She didn’t shrink under the weight of his declaration.
Instead, she reached out, calmly took the encrypted tablet from his hand, and set it facedown on the far side of the marble island... well out of his reach.
"The war can wait an hour, Mr. Sterling," Ana said, her tone shifting into a cool, brisk authority. "Right now, you are a patient with three fresh bullet wounds and a torn shoulder."
Walter blinked, caught entirely off guard by her audacity. He glanced at Damian, clearly waiting for his boss to snap her wrist or order her out of the room.
Damian didn’t lash out. A slow, dangerous glint of dark amusement flickered in his obsidian eyes as he watched her move around the kitchen with crisp, no-nonsense efficiency.
"Dismissed, Walter," Damian commanded in a low, gravelly rasp, his eyes never leaving Ana’s face. "Lock the network down. We deal with Dante’s market games after noon."
"Understood, Boss," Walter murmured, giving a swift nod before beating a hasty retreat down the hall.
The moment the doors clicked shut, Ana turned back to Damian with a steaming bowl of light broth and a small porcelain cup filled with the dark, bitter herbal tonic Victoria had left for his inflammation.
"Sit," Ana instructed, nodding toward the high barstool.
Damian arched a dark brow, leaning casually against the counter with his arms crossed over his bare, heavily bandaged chest. "Giving orders to your master, little doll?"
"I am following your direct command," Ana replied smoothly, placing the cup directly in front of him. "You ordered me to stay by your side until you are completely healed. Which means until these stitches come out, you drink this, you eat your breakfast, and you keep your hands off tactical screens."
A wicked smirk played at the corner of Damian’s lips. The towering, lethal shadow of the Sterling empire didn’t feel remotely undermined by her stern little routine; he found it thoroughly intoxicating.
He pulled out the barstool, sinking his large frame into the seat without a fight, the dark hunger in his gaze tracking every movement of her hands as she checked the clean dressing on his shoulder.
He picked up the tonic, downing the foul, bitter liquid in a single, unbothered swallow, his eyes locked onto hers the entire time.
"Careful, Anastasia," Damian murmured, his voice thick with a low, seductive rumble as he set the cup down with a sharp click. "If you enjoy playing nurse this much, I might just tear these stitches open every night to keep you at my bedside."
Ana felt a sudden spike of heat rush to her cheeks, but she refused to let him see the crack in her armor. She reached across the marble to clear the empty porcelain cup, keeping her expression masked in cool detachment.
"Don’t flatter yourself, Damian," she said dryly. "I just don’t want to explain to your sister and mother... why the great Damian Sterling bled out over cold sourdough."
Before her fingers could lift the saucer, Damian’s uninjured right hand shot out.
His calloused grip locked around her wrist with effortless power, yanking her forward until her hips collided firmly with his knees, pulling her directly between his parted thighs.
Ana gasped, her hands instinctively coming down against his rigid, unbandaged shoulder to steady herself. The raw, untamed heat radiating from his bare skin enveloped her instantly, suffocating every rehearsed defense she had left.
Damian didn’t let go. He leaned upward, his towering frame dwarfing hers even while seated, his lips hovering mere millimeters from the sensitive curve of her throat. The deep, gravelly vibration of his voice rolled straight against her bare skin.
"You talk a lot of discipline for someone pinned in my lap, little bird," Damian rasped, a wicked, devilish tilt to his mouth. "If you’re going to play caretaker, you do it properly. My left arm is immobile. Feed me."
Ana’s dark eyes narrowed, her pulse hammering wildly against her ribs where his knuckles rested against her hip. "You have a perfectly functional right hand."
"And using it to hold you right here feels considerably more important," Damian whispered, his grip tightening just enough to emphasize the unyielding strength in his frame. His hooded obsidian eyes held hers with a dark, commanding challenge. "The spoon, Anastasia. Unless you want me to find a much less civilized way to take my breakfast."
A breathless shiver traced down her spine. Biting the inside of her cheek to quell the sudden rush of color in her face, Ana reached out with her free hand, picking up the silver spoon from the bowl of warm broth.
She lifted the broth to his mouth, her fingers steady despite the electric charge snapping between them.
Damian’s gaze never wavered from hers as he accepted the spoon, his lips brushing lightly against the polished metal, drinking in her undivided attention with slow, predatory satisfaction.
"Good girl," he murmured, his thumb stroking a slow, possessive circle against the bare skin of her waist as he pulled her a fraction closer. "Now keep going. We have all morning, and I intend to make you pay for every single minute of this obedience."
