The quiet luxury of the east garden suite felt suffocating.
Clara paced the polished hardwood floor, her arms wrapped tightly over her chest as she tried to shake the chilling realization of Damian’s words.
A calculated snare.
Every compliment from that corporate recruiter, every line of that inflated compensation package... it had all been a blueprint to turn her into a weapon against Ana.
A sharp, double-vibration on the glass bedside table shattered her thoughts.
Clara stepped over and picked up her personal phone. A single encrypted notification glowed across the dark screen from an unlisted corporate domain:
Miss Clara, we’ve revised the senior portfolio terms to include direct equity. Mr. Sullivan’s executive director would like to finalize your onboarding over a private dinner tomorrow, 8:00 PM at The Obsidian Room, downtown. Discretion is requested.
A cold rush of fury surged through Clara’s veins. It wasn’t fear... it was pure, blistering rage. They thought they could manipulate her ambition, exploit her loyalty to Ana, and play her like a dispensable pawn.
She grabbed the phone, spun on her heel, and yanked the heavy suite door open.
Jullian was barely ten paces down the corridor, leisurely tossing a set of brass keys between his palms.
Before he could turn around, Clara crossed the distance in sharp, determined strides. She reached out and grabbed his tailored linen sleeve, her fingers digging firmly into the hard muscle of his forearm to jerk him to a halt.
Jullian blinked in surprise, looking down at the small, furious hand gripping his arm, then up at her blazing eyes. A slow, intrigued smirk touched his lips. "Miss Clara, if you missed my charming company that much..."
"Shut up and look at this," Clara cut in, her voice low, fierce, and trembling with adrenaline.
She shoved the glowing screen directly against his chest.
Jullian’s easy expression vanished in an instant. His sharp, aristocratic eyes narrowed as he read the encrypted text, the playful smirk hardening into cold, calculated focus.
"They’re moving the timeline up," Jullian murmured, his jaw tightening. "They want to isolate you downtown away from our grid. I’m having Walter flag the IP and blackhole the server."
"No," Clara demanded, her grip tightening on his arm, refusing to let him walk away. "You are not blocking anything. I am answering this message. I am going to that dinner."
Jullian stared at her like she had lost her mind. "Are you insane? You had surgery forty-eight hours ago. You’re not stepping foot outside this gate, let alone walking into a private dining suite with Dante Sullivan’s inner circle."
"I am not hiding under sheets while they hunt any innocent down!"
Clara snapped, her breath ragged, her chin tilted up in sheer defiance.
"They think I’m just an ambitious auditor looking for a fat paycheck. They don’t know I know who they are. Use me as the bait, Montgomery. Put your wire on me, surround the block with your men, and let me draw them out into the open so we can bury them."
Jullian looked down at her, caught between sheer disbelief and a sudden, electrifying surge of respect. The fire in her eyes was wild, reckless, and undeniably fierce.
"You’re completely unhinged, you know that?" Jullian murmured, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous rumble.
"Then let’s go tell Sterling before I change my mind," Clara fired back, letting go of his arm and marching straight toward the drawing room.

The silence in the drawing room thickened, heavy and intoxicating.
Pinned between the polished pillar and the towering wall of Damian’s chest, Ana felt every beat of her own racing heart. His thumb remained firm against the hollow of her throat, feeling the rapid, frantic flutter of her pulse beneath his skin.
"Tell me you understand, Anastasia," Damian repeated, his gravelly baritone vibrating straight through her. "You don’t run from me until I let you."
Ana’s pride, the instinct that had kept her guarded and defensive for four long years, flickered... and finally surrendered. Looking up into the fierce, unyielding darkness of his eyes, she realized the terrifying truth... the cage he built around her was the only place in the world where she was truly safe.
Her family had traded her away like currency; Damian had taken three bullets to drag her out of the dark.
"I understand," Ana whispered, her voice barely a breath. Her fingers curled into the soft fabric of his dark shirt, resting gently over the warmth of his uninjured ribs. "I’m not running until you let me go, Damian."
Something raw and possessive flared in his obsidian gaze.
He didn’t give her time to second-guess the admission. His hand slid from her throat to the back of her neck, his fingers tangling into her dark hair and tilting her head back. Leaning down, he captured her mouth in a searing, deliberate kiss that stole whatever breath she had left.
It was neither the punishing demand of a captor nor the feverish hunger of the morning. It was slow, deep, and devastatingly thorough. He tasted of black coffee and cool cedar, his lips parting hers with an intoxicating claim that made her knees weaken.
Ana let out a soft, shuddering gasp against his mouth, her hands sliding up to grip his uninjured shoulder, pulling him closer as the last of her emotional walls fractured into dust.
Damian let out a low, rough rumble against her lips, his heavy arm wrapping securely around her waist to take her full weight, holding her so tightly against his frame that not even a sliver of daylight could slip between them.
The heavy click of the drawing room door handle shattered the air.
Ana broke the kiss with a sharp gasp, her cheeks blazing crimson as she pressed her forehead against Damian’s collarbone to catch her ragged breath.
Damian didn’t scramble to create distance. He simply shifted, shielding her flushed face behind his broad shoulder as Jullian Montgomery strolled back into the room, tossing a set of keys lightly in his hand.
Jullian stopped in his tracks, taking in the suspiciously close posture and the sharp, lethal glare Damian instantly fixed on him. An amused, knowing smirk slowly spread across Jullian’s face.
"Well," Jullian drawled with a dry chuckle, holding up his hands in mock surrender. "Glad to see your cardiovascular health is making such a rapid recovery, Sterling. But we have a minor development in the east wing."
Damian’s hand remained settled on Ana’s waist, his voice cold and gravelly. "What development?"
Jullian’s amusement sobered into something sharp and calculating. "Miss Clara just checked her personal phone. The head recruiter from Sullivan Global sent an encrypted follow-up half an hour ago... they want an off-the-books dinner meeting tomorrow night to finalize her contract."
Jullian crossed his arms, his eyes gleaming with a dangerous, aristocratic edge. "She wants to use the private line to set a trap. And she’s threatening to walk out the gates and do it herself if we don’t back her."
Ana frowned. "What did you just say?"

The double doors of the tactical study swept open with a heavy, purposeful thud.
Clara marched straight across the room toward the massive mahogany desk, her boots striking the dark parquet with furious determination. Jullian followed half a step behind her, his tailored jacket unbuttoned, his aristocratic features a tense, lethal mask of sharp focus.
"I am going to The Obsidian Room tonight," Clara announced, slamming her personal phone flat onto the desk between them.
Ana, sitting closely at Damian’s right flank, gasped in horror. "Clara, no! You were in an ICU bed forty-eight hours ago... Dante Sullivan’s men were at the docks with assault rifles. You cannot walk into a private dinner with them!"
"She’s right, it’s reckless."
Jullian said, though his eyes gleamed with cold calculation as he leaned over the table.
"Dante’s executive director isn’t looking to hire an auditor. Sullivan Global is staging an offshore digital siphon. They want Clara’s high-level Sterling clearance credentials to breach our maritime accounts during the dinner. If she sits at that table, we can reverse the breach and drain Dante’s liquidity in forty-eight seconds flat."
"No," Ana said, her voice trembling as she looked up at Damian. "Damian, tell them no. She’s my best friend."
Damian didn’t look away from the glowing screen. His obsidian eyes narrowed into razor slits, calculating the margins with ruthless precision. His uninjured hand reached out and rested heavily over Ana’s trembling fingers, anchoring her firmly to the chair.
"We take the play," Damian rasped, his baritone slicing through the room with absolute authority.
"Damian!" Ana breathed, her chest tightening.
"On one condition."
Damian continued, his gaze shifting up to pin Clara under a lethal, unyielding stare.
"You don’t take a single step without Montgomery. Jullian is your exclusive handler. If the perimeter twitches, if the conversation shifts off script, or if the server goes dark for even half a heartbeat, Montgomery extracts you and burns the venue to the ground."
Clara didn’t flinch. She didn’t drop her gaze, nor did she shrink under the terrifying aura of the self-made syndicate kingpin.
Instead, she placed both palms flat on Damian’s mahogany desk, leaning straight into his space, completely indifferent to his power, his wealth, or his lethal reputation.
"I don’t have a handler, Mr. Sterling."
