Stripping For My Devil Ex Husband

Chapter 144: The Devil’s Captive

Jullian stood motionless, his jaw tightening into hard granite as the sharp sting of her rejection settled in.

"A lapse in judgment," he repeated, his aristocratic drawl gone, replaced by a strained, hollow edge.

"I don’t trust men," Clara said, turning her back to him to hide the sudden, burning prickle behind her eyes. Her voice was steady, forged from years of surviving on her own terms. "Not Damian Sterling, not Dante Sullivan, and not a charming billionaire heir who treats danger like a sport. I rely on myself, Mr. Montgomery. I always have, and I always will. Don’t go looking for something that isn’t there."

The silence in the library became deafening, thick with unspoken hurt and sharp, jagged walls thrown high between them.

The heavy oak door creaked open softly, breaking the suffocating stillness.

Valerie stepped into the room carrying a silver service tray with a steaming porcelain pot of chamomile tea and delicate cups.

"I thought you two might need something warm after the rain..." Valerie began gently, offering a tentative smile.

She took two steps inside and stopped dead in her tracks.

Her gaze darted from Clara’s rigid, turned back to Jullian’s dark, wounded profile. The air in the room was so thick with tension it was practically suffocating.

The old, petty Valerie might have made a biting remark, but the girl standing there now simply lowered her eyes, instantly sensing the raw, heavy gravity of a moment she had unintentionally interrupted.

"I... I can leave this on the side table," Valerie murmured softly, setting the tray down with delicate care and taking an immediate step back toward the threshold. "If you need anything else, Walter is still downstairs."

The storm outside tapped a steady, melancholic rhythm against the tall bay windows, wrapping the master suite in quiet isolation.

Ana finished setting the empty water glass onto the nightstand. She stood by the edge of the bed, her arms crossed lightly over her chest, staring down at the intricate patterns woven into the Persian rug.

The silence stretched between them... heavy, fragile, and burdened with the ghosts of the past two years.

"What happens when the contract ends, Damian?"

Her voice was soft, barely carrying over the hum of the rain, but it cut through the room with absolute clarity.

Damian sat back against the headboard, his bare chest bruised beneath the clean linen bandages. His obsidian eyes tracked her every movement. "What are you asking, Anastasia?"

"I’m asking what becomes of me when the debt is settled," Ana said, turning to look at him, her hazel eyes clouded with quiet dread. "Dante Sullivan knows who I am. My father and Mark will never stop looking for an angle to exploit. When this term is over and your debt is paid... do I have to face all these vultures entirely alone?"

A dark, bitter shadow crossed Damian’s sharp features. His jaw tightened, his voice dropping into a harsh, unyielding gravel. "Those vultures would have been buried in the dirt two years ago if you had just stayed obedient during our marriage instead of letting Vivian poison your mind and run away."

Ana frowned, a sharp pang of hurt flaring behind her ribs.

"Obedient?"

Ana countered, her voice trembling with the weight of long-buried agony as she stepped closer to the foot of the bed.

"You hated my very presence in this house, Damian. Every time you looked at me, all you saw was Richard Vance and how he framed a fraud case that ruined your father. But despite all that, I was foolish enough to hope. I thought... if you spent a hundred million dollars to pull me out of that hell, maybe there was a flicker of something real. When you put a ring on my finger and made it legal, you gave me hope for a new beginning."

Her eyes shone with unshed tears, her throat tightening as she forced the truth out into the open.

"And then you became a ghost," Ana whispered, the raw grief of those two lost years cracking through her composure. "You never looked at me. You never touched me. You barely spoke a single word to me for two whole years. I lived in this massive, freezing estate like a phantom, suffocating in your silence. How was I supposed to stay through that, Damian? How could anyone survive that kind of cold?"

Damian remained motionless, but a muscle in his jaw ticked with violent restraint. His dark eyes locked onto hers, devoid of regret, but laced with a cold, calculated reality.

"I didn’t touch you or talk to you because I didn’t see the point," Damian rasped coldly. "My plan was always to let you walk away clean once the accounts were settled and the Vance empire was burned till the ground. I was keeping you separated from the rot."

The words struck Ana like a physical blow. A dull, hollow ache settled in her chest... he had kept his distance not out of noble restraint, but because she had simply been a task waiting to be checked off.

She looked down, her fingers curling tightly into the fabric of her skirt, before lifting her gaze with a tentative, almost desperate hesitation.

"And what if I don’t want to leave right away?" Ana asked quietly, biting the inside of her lip. "What if... what if I take my time after the contract expires?"

Damian tilted his head slightly, a dark, curious gleam sparking in the depths of his obsidian eyes. "How much time are we talking about, little bird?"

Ana swallowed, her heart hammering against her ribs as she looked directly into the storm of his gaze. "Days... weeks. Maybe months."

A slow, dangerous stillness took over Damian’s frame. The faint trace of an enigmatic, possessive smirk touched the corner of his lips.

"Northwood doesn’t take charity cases, Anastasia," Damian murmured, his baritone dropping into a low, velvet rumble that vibrated straight down her spine. "You’ll have to pay for your stay."

Ana blinked, entirely bewildered. "Pay? You have more wealth than half this country combined. What could I possibly have that you don’t already own?"

Without a word, Damian reached out with his uninjured arm, his large, calloused hand wrapping firmly around her wrist and hauling her forward until she stumbled between his knees.

The heat radiating from his bare chest enveloped her instantly. Before she could draw a breath, his fingers slid to the hem of her soft knit dress, his knuckles grazing the bare, sensitive skin of her thighs as he slowly, deliberately began to gather the fabric upward over her hips.

"I have my own ways of collecting payment," Damian whispered against the curve of her jaw, his voice dark, velvet, and suffocatingly near as he pulled the fabric completely over her body, leaving no space, no past, and no escape between them.

The cool air of the room brushed against Anastasia’s skin as the dress fell away, leaving her vulnerable under the unyielding intensity of his gaze.

"Take the rest off," Damian commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that brooked no disobedience. "And get on the bed."

Ana stiffened, a sudden wave of panic and defiance colliding in her chest. Her hands came up to cross over herself, her fingers digging into her arms as she took an instinctive step backward.

"Damian, stop," Ana whispered, her voice trembling between fear and raw indignation. "You’re injured. And I... I am not some possession you can just summon whenever you want to assert control."

A dark, dangerous stillness washed over Damian. He didn’t rise hastily... his healing ribs wouldn’t allow reckless movement... but the sheer, suffocating gravity of his presence filled every corner of the room.

He leaned forward, his uninjured arm extending with lethal, practiced precision. His fingers locked around her wrist with undeniable strength, cutting off her retreat and hauling her back until she was pressed against the edge of the mattress, right between his thighs.

"You forget where you are, sweet doll," Damian murmured, his voice dropping to a harsh, velvet rumble right against her ear, making a violent shiver race down her spine. "You signed a contract binding you to me and to my terms. You came back into my world, you asked to stay under my roof, and until the day I say otherwise, you are entirely at my mercy."

Ana parted her lips to protest, but the words withered in her throat as his calloused fingers traced a burning path along the line of her throat, tilting her chin upward so she had no choice but to drown in the bottomless obsidian of his eyes.

"Don’t fight a battle you’ve already lost, Anastasia," he whispered, his thumb pressing lightly against the frantic flutter of her pulse. "Strip. Now."

Trapped under the weight of his unyielding gaze and the dangerous heat radiating from his chest, Ana’s defiance slowly fractured into a breathless, trembling surrender.

With shaking hands, she reached behind her, letting the last barriers fall away before settling onto the sheets between his legs, held entirely captive in the storm of his command.
