Stripping For My Devil Ex Husband

Chapter 147: The Devil’s Friend Bleeds

"He’s destroying his family’s legacy for me, Ana," Clara whispered, her fierce emerald eyes shining with raw, uncharacteristic panic. She dragged a hand through her hair, her breath hitching in her throat.

"The Montgomery shipping network is three generations of aristocratic power. Jullian threw all of it into the fire just to pull me out of that damn hotel. And last night... I told him he was nothing more than a mistake."

"You were scared," Ana murmured gently, squeezing her fingers. "You’ve spent your entire life being the shield for everyone around you, Clara. It’s terrifying to watch someone stand in front of you and take the bullets instead. But pushing him away while he burns down his world to protect you will only break both of you."

Clara stared at her best friend, the sharp walls she had spent years building crumbling into dust. "I have to fix this."

Without waiting another second, Clara shoved her chair back and hurried out of the dining room, her heels clicking rapidly against the polished marble as she made her way toward Jullian’s private guest study.

She didn’t bother knocking.

Clara pushed the heavy oak door open and stepped inside. Jullian stood near the wide mahogany desk, his back to her, an unlit cigarette between his fingers and his encrypted satellite phone resting flat against the wood. The room was thick with quiet, brooding tension.

"If you’re here to offer another clinical analysis of my family’s ruin, Clara," Jullian drawled without turning around, his aristocratic tone laced with a biting, exhausted chill, "save your breath. I’m busy."

"Turn around and look at me, Jullian," Clara demanded, her voice shaking with a fierce mixture of fury and desperate guilt.

Jullian turned slowly, his hazel eyes completely devoid of the playful warmth he usually carried. "What do you want, Clara? You made your terms exceptionally clear last night. I don’t need your pity, and I certainly don’t need your corporate guilt."

"I am not pitying you!"

Clara stepped closer, closing the distance between them until she was standing right against his desk, her chest heaving.

"Your father is threatening to strip your inheritance! Dante Sullivan is hunting your family’s assets because of me! How do you expect me to sit in that dining room and act like none of this matters?"

"Because it doesn’t matter to you," Jullian said, his voice dropping into a harsh, bitter murmur as he leaned in, his towering frame casting a shadow over her. "You made sure I understood that. You don’t trust men, you don’t need protection, and that kiss was just a pathetic lapse in judgment. So let my empire burn, Clara. Why the hell do you care?"

"Because I was terrified, damn you!" Clara broke, the words ripping from her throat as tears finally spilled over her lashes.

Jullian froze, the icy mask slipping from his features.

"I care because you make me feel things I spent my entire life trying to bury," Clara choked out, her hands curling into the lapels of his tailored vest, clinging to him despite herself. "I care because watching you take this hit for me is tearing me apart. Don’t you dare shut me out, Jullian. Don’t you dare act like I don’t give a damn about you."

Jullian stared down at her, his hazel eyes wide and completely unguarded. The unlit cigarette slipped from his fingers, clattering forgotten against the mahogany desk as he felt the desperate, trembling grip of her hands clutching his vest.

For a second, the heavy, suffocating anger between them vanished, replaced by an intoxicating, fragile warmth. His large hands came up, hovering near her waist as if he wanted nothing more than to pull her into his chest and hold her until the entire world stopped burning.

"Clara..." Jullian whispered, his voice losing every trace of its mocking edge, dropping into a low, raw rasp.

The moment his fingers brushed against the fabric of her dress, Clara stiffened.

The brief surge of vulnerability that had ripped through her shattered. Reality crashed back down with brutal clarity, reminding her of the cold, unyielding rules that had kept her alive and unbroken for years.

With a sharp, ragged breath, Clara shoved his hands away and stepped back, her knuckles turning white as she wiped the stray tear from her cheek with aggressive, trembling haste.

"Don’t," Clara choked out, her voice hardening, though the tremor running beneath it gave away the agony behind her words. "Don’t touch me, Jullian."

Jullian didn’t advance, but the intensity in his gaze bore straight through the walls she was frantically throwing back up. "You just admitted you care, Clara. You just told me..."

"I told you I was terrified!"

Clara interrupted, her chin lifting with defiant, desperate pride.

"And that is exactly why this ends right here. I cannot open my heart to you, Montgomery. I gave everything to a man once before, and I watched him tear my life apart without a second thought. I won’t be made a fool of again. I won’t survive it."

She let out a bitter, self-mocking laugh, crossing her arms tightly over her chest as if she could physically hold herself together.

"And you?"

Clara’s eyes flashed with a painful, guarded fire.

"Look at your life, Jullian. Your entire reputation with women is a revolving door of elite parties, whispered affairs, and aristocratic games. Everything about who you are screams for me to run in the opposite direction. I am not another conquest for you to cross off your list."

The words were sharp, built to wound and push him away, but Jullian didn’t flinch.

Instead, a profound, unyielding resolve settled over his features. The easygoing playboy persona vanished completely, replaced by a quiet, lethal certainty that was far more dangerous.

He took a single, deliberate step toward her, his hazel eyes locking onto hers with unwavering gravity.

"Then let me prove you wrong," Jullian said, his voice dropping to a low, velvet vow that resonated through the quiet study. "I don’t give a damn about my past, Clara, and I certainly don’t care about the reputation I left behind. If I can’t win your heart today, I’ll try again tomorrow. And if you push me away tomorrow, I will keep trying, again and again, until you realize I’m not going anywhere."

Clara’s breath hitched in her throat. The sheer weight of his conviction hit her like a physical blow, threatening to dissolve the last shreds of her composure. Her vision blurred with fresh, stinging tears.

Unable to bear the overwhelming intensity of his gaze, and refusing to completely break down in front of him, Clara turned sharply on her heel.

Without uttering another word, she practically bolted toward the door, pulling it open and disappearing down the long corridor, leaving Jullian standing alone in the quiet room, his vow lingering heavily in the air behind her.

The heavy oak door slammed shut, cutting off the sound of Clara’s retreating footsteps.

Julian remained entirely still in the center of the study. The scent of her citrus perfume still lingered in the air, clashing with the bitter aroma of stale tobacco. He looked down at the unlit cigarette lying on the dark wood of his desk, then slowly unclenched his fists.

A quiet, dangerous calm settled over him. For years, Julian had worn his reckless charm like a shield, letting the high-society tabloids paint him as a fleeting, unbothered playboy who never stayed past sunrise.

But hearing Clara’s voice break... seeing the raw, guarded agony in her emerald eyes when she spoke of past betrayal... had stripped all the vanity away.

She thought he was chasing a conquest.

Julian scooped up his encrypted satellite phone, his hazel eyes hardening into cold flint. He didn’t dial his father’s line this time; he patched directly into the Montgomery syndicate’s private security network in London.

"Activate the Rhine corridor black-ops protocol," Julian commanded, his voice devoid of humor, dropping into the lethal authority of an empire’s true heir. "Dante Sullivan wants to squeeze our maritime trade? Call in every marker we hold on the Rotterdam port authorities. Liquidate their subsidiary holding accounts by two o’clock. I want Dante completely blinded in Western Europe before he even figures out where the strike came from."

He cut the line, his jaw clenched with absolute resolve. He wasn’t just defending his family’s legacy anymore; he was going to dismantle every threat hovering over the woman who had just run from his arms.

At the far end of the eastern wing, Clara stood in the glass-walled conservatory, hidden among the tall palms and blooming orchids.

She leaned heavily against a stone pillar, her trembling hands pressed over her face as she struggled to pull the jagged pieces of her composure back together.

The cool glass beneath her knuckles did nothing to soothe the feverish heat beneath her skin. Julian’s words kept echoing in her mind... an unyielding, terrifying promise that refused to let her hide behind her scars.

"Clara."
