The heavy silence of the master suite was broken only by the steady, muffled rhythm of the rain outside.
Ana sat curled up on the plush velvet sofa, a thick hardcover book resting in her lap. Her eyes were fixed on the open page, but she hadn’t read a single sentence in twenty minutes.
Her heart was still pounding from the suffocating, intense standoff in the elevator, her mind a chaotic storm of anger, confusion, and exhaustion.
The bathroom door clicked open, releasing a soft cloud of warm steam into the cool air of the bedroom.
Damian stepped out, completely unbothered by the quiet war hanging between them. A dark charcoal towel was slung low around his broad hips, leaving his towering, sculpted chest bare.
Glistening water droplets tracked down the defined contours of his shoulders, and damp strands of black hair fell over his forehead, dripping onto his jawline.
Ana instinctively glanced up at the sound of his heavy footsteps. Her gaze caught on his drenched physique, her breath hitching slightly before she could catch herself.
Damian stopped in his tracks. A slow, dangerous smirk tugged at the corner of his lips as his obsidian eyes locked onto hers, catching her red-handed.
"If you want something, sweet angel..." Damian purred, his baritone low and dripping with effortless arrogance, "...you shouldn’t feel shy to ask for it."
Ana’s cheeks instantly flushed a deep crimson. Embarrassment burned through her veins, and she quickly threw her eyes back down onto the pages of her book, her fingers clutching the hard cover tightly. "I was just looking at the door," she lied hastily.
Damian let out a low, amused rumble from his chest. He didn’t say a word as he closed the distance between them, his towering shadow falling over the sofa.
He leaned down, his warm, damp scent of cedarwood and rain completely surrounding her. Before Ana could protest, his large hand cupped the back of her neck, bringing his lips down onto hers in a deep, possessive kiss.
The heat of his body was intoxicating, his touch sending a sharp electric pulse straight down her spine. His free hand slid down her waist, gripping her hip firmly as he prepared to lift her into his arms and carry her to the bed.
No.
The realization hit her like a bucket of ice water. He thought he could act like a dictator in public and simply sweep her into bed in private.
Ana gathered every ounce of strength she had, forcefully pushing her hands against his broad chest. She broke the kiss, twisting her body with a sudden, frantic agility, and slid right out of his powerful grasp.
She scrambled off the sofa, stumbling slightly on the hardwood floor before turning to face him, her chest heaving, her eyes blazing with fierce determination.
She wasn’t going to let him toy with her body or use physical desire to erase his ruthless behavior. Not until he learned to respect her. Not until he learned to be a gentleman.
Damian stood by the sofa, momentarily frozen as his arms caught nothing but empty air. His smirk vanished, replaced by a subtle, dangerous twitch in his jaw.
He treated her sudden flight like a mild tantrum, stepping forward with an unhurried, dominant grace, reaching out to catch her wrist.
"Anastasia, come here," he commanded softly.
Ana didn’t wait. The second his hand extended toward her, she spun around and sprinted straight out of the master bedroom, her bare feet slapping against the cold floor as she vanished down the long, dimly lit hallway.
Damian’s hand snapped shut on thin air.
He stood alone in the quiet master suite, his drenched chest rising and falling heavily. For the first time in his life, the unyielding titan of Sterling Global was caught completely off guard by a defiance he had never seen coming.

Ana sprinted down the hallway, her heart pounding against her ribs. She didn’t stop until she reached the far end of the penthouse, ducking into the secondary guest suite and slamming the heavy oak door shut behind her.
Click.
She turned the brass lock, leaning her back against the cool wood, her chest heaving as she let out a breathless laugh of pure adrenaline.
She had actually just run away from Damian Sterling... barefoot, drenched in anger, and entirely unbothered by his status.
On the other side of the door, heavy, deliberate footsteps came to a halt.
Damian stood in the hallway, now wearing dark silk drawstring pants, his bare torso still slightly damp. He stared at the locked door, his brow furrowed in absolute, genuine disbelief.
No one locked Damian Sterling out of a room in his own penthouse. No one.
He raised a hand, knocking twice... a slow, authoritative sound that echoed through the quiet corridor.
"Anastasia," Damian spoke, his tone smooth, deep, and laced with an amused edge. "Unbolt the door."
"No!" Ana shouted back from inside, crossing her arms tightly over her chest. "Go sleep in your own room!"
A brief silence hung in the hallway. Damian rested one heavy palm against the wooden doorframe, leaning in slightly.
"You do realize I have the master key to every lock on this floor, sweet doll?" Damian purred softly, his tone dangerously playful. "This door is a formality."
"If you use that key, Damian, I swear to God I will throw every pillow in this room at your head!" Ana yelled back, stepping away from the door and sitting firmly on the edge of the plush guest bed. "And then I will sleep on the balcony! Try me!"
Outside, Damian’s jaw twitched. A low chuckle rumbled deep in his throat... a sound so rare and genuine it nearly shocked him.
He didn’t pull out a master key. Instead, he leaned his forehead against the wood, the unyielding titan willingly held at bay by a stubborn, fierce woman who refused to let him buy or bully his way into her grace.
"You’re demanding a gentleman, Anastasia," Damian murmured, his voice dropping into a quiet, rich register that easily penetrated the heavy oak. "Is locking me out in the hallway part of your gentle lesson?"
"It’s step one!" Ana called back, though a tiny, undeniable smile tugged at the corner of her lips despite herself. "Step two is you going back to your room and thinking about your terrible attitude!"
Damian let out a slow, amused breath, shaking his head in the dark hallway. For a man who controlled global markets with a single phone call, he was currently being placed in a corporate time-out by his own ex-wife.
"Step two," Damian repeated softly under his breath, his dark eyes gleaming with a quiet, dangerous fondness.
He stepped back from the door, folding his arms across his chest as he looked at the locked brass handle one last time.
"Goodnight, my stubborn doll," Damian called out softly, his footsteps finally retreating down the hallway toward the master suite.
Inside the quiet room, Ana sank back against the soft pillows, clutching her blanket to her chest.
Her heart was still beating fast, but the suffocating weight of the day had finally lifted, replaced by a quiet, warm defiance that proved she wasn’t just surviving Damian’s world anymore... she was taking her power back.
