Stripping For My Devil Ex Husband

Chapter 84: The Devil’s In-laws

The sleek armored Maybach glided smoothly through the evening city traffic. Rain had washed the streets clean, reflecting the neon signs of the bustling entertainment district.

Ana leaned her cheek against the cool tinted glass, watching the city drift past. Suddenly, her eyes widened. Parked beside a brightly lit street corner was a vibrant, steaming taco truck, surrounded by a small crowd of happy patrons.

"Damian!" Ana gasped, sitting up straight and tapping the leather seat. "Can we stop? I want a taco."

Damian didn’t look up from his tablet, his thumb smoothly scrolling through an offshore acquisition draft. "No. Mrs. Gable has already prepared a full four-course dinner at the penthouse."

Ana turned to him, crossing her arms over her chest and letting out a soft, dramatic pout. "One taco isn’t going to ruin my appetite, Damian."

Damian paused, his dark eyes shifting to her face. He took in her stubborn, pleading expression, letting out a low, weary sigh that rumbled deep in his throat.

"It’s like I’m dealing with a child," Damian muttered under his breath. He tapped the partition glass. "Pull over, Thomas."

The driver smoothly brought the heavy luxury vehicle to the curb. Before the locks could even fully disengage, Ana pushed the door open and darted out, her coat fluttering in the evening breeze as she hurried straight to the food truck.

Damian stepped out behind her, shaking his head in absolute disbelief.

By the time he reached the counter, Ana was standing there with a radiant smile, accepting a heavy, steaming tray packed with six different varieties of street tacos loaded with fresh salsa and cilantro.

Damian stared at the tray, a dark brow pulling down in warning. "Anastasia. I told you dinner is waiting."

"Well, the order is already placed," Ana reasoned smoothly, her eyes sparkling with quiet mischief as she looked up at him. "So why don’t we just share it?"

Without waiting for his answer, she turned and walked over to a quiet wooden bench beneath a street lamp. She sat down, carefully balancing the tray on the slatted bench between them.

Damian hesitated for a second before folding his long legs to sit beside her, his tailored dark suit looking wildly out of place on the public bench.

Ana picked up a carnitas taco, taking a small, contented bite before looking out at the passing streetlights. A soft, wistful expression settled over her features.

"Your father... Arthur Sterling... used to buy me tacos," Ana murmured softly, her voice carrying a sweet, nostalgic warmth. "There was a small stall that used to open near my high school."

The air around Damian instantly turned frigid. His jaw tightened, his posture going rigid at the sudden mention of his father’s name from her lips.

Ana didn’t notice his sudden tension, continuing gently. "Arthur... being the butler of our estate back then... he knew how my parents treated me. Every time I made a tiny mistake, they would forbid me from eating dinner. They’d isolate me in my room for days."

She looked down at the taco in her hands, a faint, sad smile gracing her lips.

"Maybe that’s why he bought me a taco every single day after school," she whispered. "Just in case I wasn’t given a meal that night... so I wouldn’t have to sleep on an empty stomach."

Damian stared straight ahead into the dark street. A low, bitter mockery laced his baritone when he finally spoke. "Yeah... My father had a very big heart. One of the main reasons why he got targeted and ruined by your family."

He reached out, grabbing a taco from the tray and taking a harsh, heavy bite.

Ana turned her head, looking at the sharp, angry line of his profile. She saw a smear of red salsa caught at the corner of his lower lip. Gently, without hesitation, Ana reached out her small hand, her thumb softly wiping away the sauce from his mouth.

"He didn’t deserve what happened to him, Damian," Ana spoke softly, her dark eyes filled with absolute sincerity. "But he died saving my life, a little bit every single day. If it wasn’t for Arthur... I would have been dead long ago."

Damian froze. His dark eyes snapped to hers, burning with a complex, suffocating intensity that made the air feel thin.

"What about now?" Damian asked, his voice dropping into a quiet, dangerous register. "Aren’t you glad I bought you off from your cruel family?"

Ana’s small smile faded instantly. The quiet warmth in her chest vanished, replaced by a sudden, aching tightness. She pulled her hand back, attempting to retreat into her space, but before she could, Damian’s large hand shot out, catching her wrist in an unyielding, firm grip.

"No appreciation for me, Anastasia?" Damian’s obsidian eyes bored straight into her soul, his tone dropping further. "Didn’t I save you?"

Ana’s lips trembled slightly. She looked at his gripping fingers, then slowly turned her head away, staring down at the wet pavement beneath her feet.

"What’s the point of that?" Ana whispered, her voice barely audible over the distant rumble of city traffic. "You never loved me. You never cared... and now, I think it’s better this way."

The silence that settled over the bench was heavy and suffocating.

Damian stared at her turned face, the sharp muscle in his jaw working silently. Slowly, deliberately, his grip on her wrist loosened, his fingers falling away completely.

"Right," Damian purred coldly, leaning back against the bench as his face hardened back into a stone wall. "That’s all you will ever get from me."

________________________

The Vance estate was a sprawling, opulent townhome in one of Manhattan’s most prestigious historic enclaves. To the eyes of New York high society, the Vance name still carried the weight of old-money royalty.

The marble facade was immaculate, the polished brass fixtures gleamed under the streetlamps, and liveried staff still stood at the entrance.

Inside, however, beneath the velvet drapes and gilded mirrors, the family was quietly drowning.

Behind closed doors, liquid assets were drying up, credit lines were frozen, and offshore accounts were bleeding out from years of reckless greed and failed investments.

They were desperately hiding their financial ruin from the world... and the sell-off of their youngest daughter months ago had merely bought them a brief, temporary lifeline.

In the grand, soundproof study, Richard Vance sat behind his massive mahogany desk like a spider in a velvet web.

Richard was a hollow, calculating man with sunken eyes... the corrupt mastermind whose quiet desperation had started this war. Beside him stood his wife, Evelyn Vance, dressed in custom silk, her posture stiff and her face frozen in a permanent mask of icy disgust.

She was a woman who had spent decades complacently watching her youngest daughter starve while maintaining her own pristine social standing.

Leaning casually against the marble fireplace was Mark Vance.

Ana’s elder brother twirled a heavy silver signet ring around his index finger, his thin lips curved into a sadistic smirk. Mark had spent Ana’s entire childhood finding creative ways to torment her... locking her in dark pantries, depriving her of food, and finally laughing in her face when they sold her off to cover their mounting debts.

The heavy double doors swung open. Harrison Stark... Vivian’s father... stepped into the study, flanked by Vivian, who was clad entirely in black, her eyes bloodshot, sunken, and wild with an unhinged, dangerous desperation.

"You look like hell, Harrison," Richard greeted coldly, his raspy voice cutting through the quiet room. "I hear Damian Sterling has dismantled your remaining assets piece by piece."

"Sterling hasn’t won yet," Harrison spat bitterly, stepping up to the desk. "Not if we strike him where it hurts most."
