Strongest Existence Becomes Teacher
Chapter 289 - 289: Why Did You Kill Jax?The underground hall fell into complete silence.
Zane stood calmly with one hand in his pocket, his gaze moving across the grotesque creatures surrounding him before finally settling on Jax.
"..."
The young half-demon stood between them.
Or rather...
Whatever he had become.
His gray horns continued growing little by little, rough cracks spreading across their surface. Thick black tears streamed down his face, leaving dark trails behind, while his fingernails slowly elongated into razor-sharp claws.
His entire body trembled.
"Grrrrrrrr..."
The low growl echoed throughout the chamber.
For a brief moment...
No one moved.
Then—
One of the grotesque creatures lunged.
Its twisted body crossed the distance in an instant, its enormous claw descending toward Zane's chest.
Slash!
The creature froze.
Its own claw...
Had shattered into countless pieces.
Zane hadn't moved.
He hadn't even flinched.
The grotesque creature stared blankly at the broken remains of its hand before letting out an enraged screech.
"SKREEEEAAAH!!"
Its jaw stretched unnaturally wide as rows of jagged shark-like teeth lunged toward Zane's arm.
Crunch.
Another silence followed.
The monster's teeth had broken apart one after another.
Several fragments clattered onto the stone floor.
Zane glanced at the creature before raising an eyebrow.
"...You done?"
The grotesque creature roared.
That was enough of an answer.
Flick.
Zane lightly flicked its forehead.
Boom.
Its head exploded instantly.
A fraction of a second later, the force continued downward, causing the creature's upper body to burst apart into a rain of dark red and black blood.
The lower half remained standing for only a moment before collapsing onto the floor with a wet thud.
The remaining grotesque creatures shrieked simultaneously.
As if realizing brute force was their only option, they all charged together.
One swung a claw.
Slap.
Its neck twisted nearly one hundred and eighty degrees before its body flew into a wall.
Another attempted to punch him.
Slap.
Its entire torso caved inward before it disappeared into the ceiling.
A third leaped from above.
Zane casually swatted it aside.
Its body skipped across the stone floor like a pebble before smashing through a pillar.
None of them managed to move him even a single step.
Every bite, punch, claw.
Every desperate attack...
Ended exactly the same way.
Completely ineffective.
Within moments, mangled corpses littered the hall.
Only one figure remained standing.
Jax.
"Grrrrrrrr..."
His breathing had become rough.
Slowly, he raised his head.
Those familiar eyes were gone.
Only instinct remained.
Without warning, he disappeared.
Slash!
His elongated claws cut through the air where Zane had been standing.
For the first time...
Zane moved.
He casually stepped aside, avoiding the attack by the smallest of margins.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"Wow."
"They really made you weak."
"GRAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!"
Jax answered with a furious roar.
A black aura erupted from his body.
It didn't flow like ordinary mana.
It bubbled violently...
Like boiling water spilling endlessly from within him.
Yet hidden beneath that black aura was another glow.
A brilliant golden radiance flickered through the darkness, as though light itself had become trapped inside corruption.
The entire hall trembled.
Despite the horrifying appearance...
It was unmistakably...
Pure mana.
"GRAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!"
His roar shook the underground facility once again.
The stone floor cracked beneath his feet.
Then, surrounded by the boiling black aura and radiant golden light, Jax shot toward Zane once more, his claw already descending with enough force to tear apart everything in its path.
Jax charged again.
The black aura surrounding his body churned like boiling tar, streaks of golden light flickering beneath it as his claws tore through the air toward Zane.
Yet...
Tap.
A single finger stopped the attack.
Jax roared and swung again, then again, his movements becoming faster and more savage. Claws, punches, elbows—he attacked with everything he had, but every strike was casually intercepted by one finger. Zane didn't even bother moving from his spot.
"GRAAAAHHHHH!!"
The failed attacks only made Jax more unstable. His horns continued to grow, the black tears flowing endlessly down his face while the aura around him became even more violent.
Zane watched him with interest, gently pushing away another claw.
"You're weak... but your body is doing something rather unique." Another attack came, only to be stopped by his index finger. "It's forcing itself beyond its limits, breaking apart only to keep going. And more importantly..."
His gaze lingered on the strange aura.
"You're using the dark mana of the Abyssals and the pure mana of divine beings at the same time."
For a brief moment, he fell silent.
One aspect of this... resembles how my body processes Null before converting it into other forms of energy.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
But only one aspect.
It's far too primitive... too pathetic... and far too weak to even be compared with me.
As if sensing Zane's thoughts, Jax let out another furious roar.
"GRAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!"
He suddenly threw his head back and opened his mouth.
Mana gathered.
Two spheres slowly formed before him.
One was pitch black, thick like liquid darkness, while the other glowed with a pale golden light. They revolved around one another, pulling and pushing as opposite energies struggled to coexist.
The pressure inside the hall rose rapidly.
Zane simply folded his arms and smiled.
"Go on."
"I'm standing right here."
The twin spheres grew larger until Jax suddenly stopped charging them.
For a second, it looked as though he would fire directly at Zane.
Instead...
He abruptly turned.
The attack shot toward Selene.
Her eyes widened.
"Professor—"
Before she could finish speaking, the twin spheres were already in front of her.
Zane disappeared.
Space distorted for an instant before he appeared between Selene and the attack, calmly raising one hand.
The revolving spheres crashed into his palm.
...If this explodes underground, cleaning up the mess will be annoying.
With that casual thought, he raised his other hand and pressed both palms together, trapping the unstable attack between them.
Boom!
A deafening explosion echoed through the hall.
Yet not a single spark escaped.
The violent energy remained completely confined between Zane's palms until the light gradually faded away.
When he separated his hands...
Nothing remained.
He looked at Jax with an approving smile.
"That was a good decision."
"Instead of wasting it on me, you targeted the injured one." He nodded slightly. "Most people would've been seriously injured by that attack."
His smile widened.
"Unfortunately..."
"I'm not most people."
"GRAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!"
Jax answered with another furious roar before charging once more, the boiling black aura exploding around his body as he rushed straight toward Zane.
"GRAAAAHHHHHH!!"
His claws tore through the air, the boiling black aura trailing behind him like a raging tide.
Zane watched him approach without moving.
"...Time to end this."
He slowly straightened his arm.
His fingers came together.
His open palm became as straight as the edge of a spear.
The instant Jax entered his reach—
Thrust.
There wasn't a loud explosion.
There wasn't even a visible burst of power.
Zane's hand simply pierced straight through Jax's chest as though there was nothing there to stop it.
"...Graaah..."
Jax's roar turned into a pained groan.
The black aura around him flickered violently before beginning to crumble apart.
For a brief moment...
Everything became silent.
Zane slowly pulled his hand back.
Blood dripped from the hole left in Jax's chest.
The black aura completely disappeared.
Jax's body swayed once...
Then collapsed onto the cold stone floor.
Thud.
"...Phew."
Zane lightly shook the blood from his hand.
"Done."
---
A short distance away, Selene slowly opened her eyes.
The first thing she saw...
Was Jax falling and zane removing his hand which was through his chest.
"..."
Her pupils shrank.
"No..."
Then she saw the hole through his chest.
"...Jax?"
For a second, her mind went completely blank.
"JAX!!"
Ignoring the pain surging through her body, Selene forced herself to stand.
The moment she took a step—
Crack.
Her injured left foot gave out.
She crashed onto the floor.
"Ah...!"
Even so...
She didn't stop.
Dragging herself across the stone ground, she crawled toward him, tears already blurring her vision.
"No..."
"No..."
"Please..."
Finally reaching him, she pulled Jax's motionless body into her lap, gently supporting his head with trembling hands.
Blood stained her clothes.
She didn't care.
Tears rolled freely down her cheeks.
"Wake up..."
Her voice broke.
"Please, Jax..."
"Don't die..."
"Please..."
"Please don't leave me..."
"Please..."
The only response was silence.
Across from them, Zane stood quietly.
His expression remained completely neutral as he looked down at the two of them.
Selene slowly raised her tear-filled eyes toward him.
There was grief.
Confusion.
And anger.
"...Professor."
Her voice trembled.
"...Why?"
"Why did you do it?"
The tears refused to stop.
"Why did you kill Jax?!"
The hall fell silent once again.
Zane simply looked back at her.
His face revealed nothing.
