White light swallowed the entire chamber.
Damon closed his eyes on reflex.
It did not help.
The brightness passed through his eyelids as though they were not there, entering directly into his perception.
For one second, he did not see the tree, Xue Lian, or the walls of the Tomb.
He saw lines.
Thousands of them.
Spread across places he did not recognize.
Some crossed mountains.
Others ran beneath cities.
There were roots buried in forests, frozen lakes, ruins, and regions where cold seemed not to exist at all.
All of them converged.
Not toward Xue Lian.
Toward the Seed.
Damon opened his eyes.
"Ah."
Xue Lian was on her knees.
A white line extended from her chest.
Then another.
And another.
They were not physical roots.
They were connections.
Her authority was being pulled away.
"Damon."
"I can see it."
"It’s trying to return."
"That’s what we wanted."
"Not like this."
Naturally.
The first connection completely left Xue Lian.
The Seed absorbed it.
The impact passed through the chamber.
The walls cracked.
Damon nearly lost his balance.
"What’s the problem?"
Xue Lian pressed one hand against her chest.
"It isn’t taking only the authority."
"Then what?"
"My existence."
Damon became serious.
The word continuity finally made sense in a different way.
The Seed did not separate authority from vessel.
To it, the two were the same thing.
If Xue Lian returned everything, she would be returned with it.
"So your theory that you needed to die was almost right."
"This doesn’t seem like the best time to say that."
"I’m trying to be positive."
"You’re terrible at it."
Another line left Xue Lian.
She lost strength.
Damon moved forward to catch her.
The Seed reacted immediately.
The roots around them rose.
"Don’t touch me," Xue Lian said.
Damon stopped.
"Why?"
"If it recognizes me as continuity, any contact could include you."
"Then we stay separated."
"Yes."
Another connection was torn away.
Xue Lian fell with one hand against the floor.
Damon looked at the symbol of Refusal.
It was still glowing.
"You refused."
"Yes."
"Then why is it pulling?"
"Because refusal doesn’t mean liberation."
Damon stared at the symbol.
Transfer.
Continuity.
Anchor.
Refusal.
Four functions.
Not four outcomes.
He began to understand.
"You refused to be the vessel."
Xue Lian raised her eyes.
"Yes."
"But you’re still the anchor."
She went still.
Damon pointed at the third symbol.
"That’s why."
The Seed pulsed.
Another line began leaving her.
Damon moved closer to the Anchor symbol.
"What if we break this?"
"It may release every connection at once."
"Bad."
"Extremely."
"What if we transfer it?"
"We need a destination."
"Also bad."
The Seed pulsed again.
Damon looked at the first symbol.
Transfer.
Then the second.
Continuity.
The tree had not been created merely to place authority inside someone.
It was a complete system.
Choose a vessel.
Fix it.
Maintain it.
And allow refusal.
"We’re doing this in the wrong order."
Xue Lian was breathing with difficulty.
"Explain."
"You refused before removing the anchor."
"That should be safer."
"To prevent transfer, yes. But now the Seed is pulling everything it still considers attached to the vessel."
Xue Lian looked at the symbols.
"Then we need to separate my identity from the authority before breaking the anchor."
"Exactly."
"How?"
Damon smiled without humor.
"That’s the part I still don’t know."
"Excellent."
"I’m learning from you."
She almost cursed again.
The Seed pulsed.
A fourth line began leaving her.
Damon felt the chamber change.
Not physically.
The absence that existed inside the Tomb began to disappear.
Cold entered.
Only a little.
But it entered.
That meant part of Xue Lian’s authority was leaving containment.
"We’re running out of time."
"I noticed."
Damon crouched in front of the symbols.
Not Transfer.
Maybe Continuity.
Anchor needed to be removed.
Refusal was already active.
The problem was identity.
He touched the Continuity symbol.
The Seed reacted.
A word entered his mind.
Define.
Damon froze.
"Xue Lian."
"What?"
"The thing answered."
"What did it say?"
"Define."
She went silent.
Damon looked at the symbol.
"Continuity isn’t automatic."
"It was with my mother."
"Because someone defined you."
The image returned to his memory.
The man touching the baby.
The mother trying to run.
Now the authority has continuity.
Damon understood.
"Shen Liang, or whoever did that, chose you as the next reference."
"Yes."
"Then the Seed isn’t simply looking for someone."
"It needs something to be defined."
"Or someone."
Xue Lian realized where he was going.
"Damon, no."
"I haven’t even thought of anything yet."
"Your face."
"Everyone keeps saying that now."
Another line left her chest.
Xue Lian groaned and dropped to her knees.
Damon quickly looked at the Seed.
He could not define another person.
That would only repeat everything.
He could not define Xue Lian.
She had just refused.
He could not leave it empty because the Seed would probably keep searching.
Then the answer had to be something capable of continuing without a will.
He thought of Heshan.
The returned root.
It did not belong to someone.
It belonged to the place.
Damon looked at the floor.
"Can it be a person?"
Xue Lian frowned.
"What?"
"Continuity. Does it need to be a person?"
"I don’t know."
"Territorial roots have identity."
"Yes."
"Mountains?"
"Some."
"Regions?"
"Depending on the formation."
Damon looked at the tree.
"Then we’re not choosing someone."
Xue Lian slowly understood.
"You want to define a place."
"No."
"Then what?"
Damon pointed at the tree itself.
"It."
Xue Lian went still.
"Use the tree as continuity."
"It existed before the vessels."
"The Seed is inside it."
"Even better."
"You may just be closing the cycle."
"That’s the objective."
"Or concentrating all the authority here."
Damon smiled.
"That’s also the objective."
Xue Lian stared at him.
"You want to turn the Tomb into the vessel."
"No."
He pointed at the walls.
"The Tomb is already containment."
Then at the tree.
"I want to make this the center."
Xue Lian went silent.
The idea was simple.
Maybe too simple.
Instead of destroying the authority.
Instead of transferring it to another person.
Instead of scattering it across hundreds of regions.
Return everything to the original mechanism and leave the Seed anchored somewhere without a human will to govern through it.
"If it works," Xue Lian said, "the tree could reclaim every connected root."
"I don’t want it to reclaim them."
"Then how?"
"Continuity doesn’t mean ownership."
Damon touched the symbol again.
"Define."
The word appeared.
Damon closed his eyes.
He did not have the root.
He did not have her memories mixed into his own.
He had no authority at all.
That was exactly why he might be able to choose without the Seed confusing his decision with a command.
He placed his entire palm over the symbol.
"Continuity."
The tree trembled.
Damon looked directly at the Seed.
"You."
Nothing.
Xue Lian held her breath.
Damon repeated:
"Not a person."
The white line inside the sphere grew brighter.
"Not an heir."
One of the roots rose.
"Not a vessel."
The entire tree began to vibrate.
"You."
A word appeared in his mind.
Incompatible.
Damon frowned.
"Why?"
The answer came.
Will absent.
He smiled.
"Exactly."
Xue Lian realized it.
"The authority requires a will."
"That’s what it said."
"I was right."
"Partially."
"This isn’t the time."
Damon kept his hand over the symbol.
"You don’t need to rule."
The Seed responded.
Function.
"Exist."
Insufficient.
Damon clenched his teeth.
The logic was rigid.
Authority needed to exercise something.
It could not merely exist as dead energy.
He looked at Xue Lian.
"What was its original function?"
"I don’t know."
"Before controlling regions."
"Cold."
"No."
"Roots."
"Before that."
Xue Lian went silent.
Damon pointed at the tree.
"Why did someone create this?"
She studied the structure.
Transfer.
Continuity.
Anchor.
Refusal.
It did not look like a weapon.
It looked like a preservation system.
"Preservation," she said.
The Seed pulsed.
Damon felt it.
"That was a response."
Xue Lian widened her eyes.
"Preservation of what?"
Nothing.
Damon thought of the first image.
The mother.
The child.
The transfer.
Maybe the system existed to preserve something between generations.
Not power.
Function.
"Preserve continuity."
The Seed glowed.
Accepted.
Damon smiled.
"Got it."
The reaction was immediate.
Every line leaving Xue Lian stopped.
She took a deep breath.
The tree opened its branches.
The Seed slowly rose toward the center of the trunk.
The Continuity symbol lit completely.
Then Refusal.
Damon looked at Anchor.
"Now."
Xue Lian understood.
"If we’re wrong..."
"I know."
She placed one hand over the symbol.
Nothing happened.
Xue Lian looked at Damon.
"It doesn’t respond."
"Because you’re still the anchor."
"Then how do I remove it?"
Damon pointed at the Refusal symbol.
"Again."
"I already refused."
"You refused the Seed."
He looked at her.
"Now refuse to be the center."
Xue Lian went still.
It sounded simple.
But Damon knew it was not.
Centuries of being defined by the authority.
Centuries of regions responding.
Disciples following.
Roots recognizing her name.
Xue Lian’s identity had formed around the idea that she was the center, even after she came to hate it.
She closed her eyes.
The Seed pulsed.
Damon waited.
Xue Lian spoke.
"I am not your origin."
The tree reacted.
"I am not your owner."
The Anchor symbol began to brighten.
"I am not your destination."
One of the lines in her chest disappeared.
"I am not you."
The chamber trembled.
Damon smiled.
"Keep going."
Xue Lian opened her eyes.
"You are not mine."
The Seed pulsed violently.
"I am not yours."
The Anchor symbol broke.
Not physically.
The light inside it separated.
Every connection tied to Xue Lian disappeared at once.
She fell.
Damon moved on reflex.
This time, the roots did not react.
He caught her before she hit the floor.
Xue Lian was breathing.
Weakly.
But breathing.
Damon immediately felt the difference.
That immense pressure that had always existed somewhere around her was gone.
No mountain.
No river.
No distant root.
Only a woman in his arms.
Xue Lian opened her eyes.
"Did it work?"
Damon looked at the tree.
The Seed was completely inside the trunk.
All four symbols glowed.
Transfer inactive.
Continuity active.
Anchor linked to the tree.
Refusal marked upon Xue Lian.
"For now."
She closed her eyes.
"You really don’t know how to celebrate."
"I learned from Ester."
Xue Lian laughed weakly.
Then the floor trembled.
Damon looked up.
"That seems bad."
The tree began to grow.
Not quickly.
But in a way impossible to ignore.
The roots sank deeper.
The trunk expanded.
The branches passed through the chamber ceiling as though the stone did not exist.
Xue Lian opened her eyes.
"What’s happening?"
Damon watched the lines on the walls.
One after another, they began to light.
Not returning to Xue Lian.
Going to the tree.
Heshan.
Arven.
Other regions.
Hundreds.
The Seed was not pulling the roots back.
It was recognizing all of them.
Damon became serious.
"It’s rebuilding the network."
Xue Lian tried to stand.
"We need to stop it."
"Wait."
"You just said—"
"Look."
The lines did not converge completely.
Each remained separate.
Without central command.
Without one will dominating them all.
The tree was only connecting them.
Preserving continuity.
Exactly the function they had defined.
Xue Lian went still.
"It isn’t governing."
"No."
"It’s maintaining the connection."
"Yes."
Damon smiled.
"A root without an owner."
The entire Tomb trembled again.
This time, however, not like a structure under threat.
Like something waking up.
The chamber door opened on its own.
In the distance, the sound of the enormous main gate echoed through the fortress.
Damon looked at Xue Lian.
"Was that part of the plan?"
"There is no plan anymore."
"Finally."
She slowly raised her head.
For the first time, Damon saw something no memory had ever shown him.
Xue Lian looked light.
Confused.
Wounded.
Tired.
But free.
Then a voice came from the tree.
Not the Seed.
Another one.
Much older.
Bearer concluded.
Damon went still.
So did Xue Lian.
The voice continued.
Network restored.
A pause.
Next function awaiting definition.
Damon closed his eyes.
"No."
Xue Lian looked at him.
"What?"
He pointed at the tree.
"It’s already asking for new work."
She stared at the Seed.
Then she started laughing.
Damon had not expected it.
Not a restrained smile.
A real laugh.
Long.
After centuries trapped by an authority she had never chosen, Xue Lian was laughing because the thing had finally asked instead of deciding for her.
Damon ended up smiling too.
"Don’t answer yet."
"I wasn’t going to."
"Good."
"Why?"
"Because I learned something from you."
Damon raised an eyebrow.
Xue Lian looked at the tree.
"First, we ask why."
Damon nodded.
"Now you’re learning."
