Damon remained silent.
He looked at the man.
Then at the black core on the altar.
Finally, at the mark on his own arm.
"You’re not talking about that body."
Shen Liang smiled.
"No."
Ester understood at the same instant.
She stepped in front of Damon.
"No."
Damon looked at her back.
"That was my line."
"It’s mine now."
Shen Liang tilted his head.
"Interesting."
Ester raised the needles.
"There is nothing interesting about this."
"I disagree."
Xue Lian stared at Shen Liang.
"Vorn prepared Damon for you."
"Prepared is a generous word."
Damon narrowed his eyes.
"Explain before I decide to cut that thing in half."
Shen Liang looked at the body he occupied.
The skin was too pale. There was no visible breathing. No involuntary movement. Even the eyes seemed to function only when necessary.
"This body is an interface."
"A shell," Xue Lian said.
"Yes."
"Made when?"
"Shortly before my death."
Damon pointed at him.
"So that thing is more than four hundred years old?"
"Not exactly. The core preserved the structure. It reconstructed it when the door opened."
Aria was already writing.
"Reconstitution?"
Shen Liang looked at her.
"A primitive version."
"So you possess more than one function."
"No. I have records of methods that do not belong to me."
Damon sighed.
"Naturally."
Shen Liang looked at him again.
"But this structure cannot leave this place."
"Because of the chains."
"Because of incompatibility."
He opened one hand.
The skin began to crack.
There was no flesh underneath.
There were black filaments crossed by white lines.
"My core can form a temporary structure. Not a life."
Damon became serious.
"And I’m the life."
"You are adaptation."
"Don’t call me that."
"I’m not describing a function. I’m describing what Vorn proved."
The mark burned.
Damon grabbed his forearm.
Shen Liang smiled.
"Your body accepted structures that should have destroyed one another. Different authorities. Different circulations. Incompatible inheritances."
Xue Lian immediately looked at Damon.
"That’s what the mark recorded."
"Yes."
"It wasn’t only observing how he reacted to the roots."
"It was building a map."
Ester stiffened.
"A map of what?"
Shen Liang answered calmly.
"How much he can withstand."
Damon remained silent for several seconds.
Then nodded.
"So Vorn is even more of a bastard than I thought."
"Considerably."
"Did he know I would end up here?"
"No."
That surprised Damon.
"Then how did he send me?"
"He didn’t send you to this place."
Shen Liang touched his own chest.
"He was building a universal vessel."
The silence became heavy.
Xue Lian looked at the false Seed on Damon’s arm.
"A structure capable of receiving any artificial function."
"Exactly."
Damon slowly looked at Ester.
"Do you want to hit me now or later?"
"Later."
"Good."
"Very hard."
"Fair."
Shen Liang took one step.
The chains attached to the core stretched.
Jian Yue immediately placed the ancestral sword in front of him.
"Stay where you are."
Shen Liang studied the blade.
"Jian."
Jian Yue stiffened.
"Don’t use that name as though you know me."
"I knew the first."
"I’m not him."
"Good."
Jian Yue did not seem to expect that.
Shen Liang looked at Damon again.
"Vorn intended to fill you gradually."
"With what?"
"I don’t know which function he found."
"Lie."
"I have no access to his current work beyond what the mark transmitted."
Damon thought.
"So you received information, but you weren’t sending orders."
"Few."
"Few?"
Shen Liang smiled.
"Vorn’s curiosity needed occasional guidance."
Xue Lian became serious.
"You spoke to him."
"Not directly."
"Dreams?" Mu Qing asked.
Shen Liang looked at her.
"Impulses."
Damon understood.
Ideas that felt like his own.
Intuition.
That feeling of discovering something because you were brilliant enough.
"You fed his arrogance."
"It was already there."
"You only pointed."
"Yes."
Damon laughed without humor.
"He’s going to love finding that out."
Ester looked at him.
"If he survives the conversation with you."
"That’s the idea."
The false Seed opened further.
Damon lost his smile.
Violent pain tore through his arm.
He dropped to one knee.
"Damon!"
Ester turned immediately.
Xue Lian rushed forward.
"Don’t touch the mark!"
"I know."
Ester grabbed his opposite shoulder and tried to stabilize him.
The Heavenly Body reacted.
Black Ice covered his forearm.
The mark passed through it.
Dark-blue lines appeared over the ice as though the defense simply did not exist.
Damon clenched his teeth.
"That’s new."
Shen Liang remained still.
"It started."
Damon looked up.
"What?"
"The transfer."
Jian Yue moved.
The sword came for Shen Liang’s neck.
He raised two fingers.
The blade stopped.
Jian Yue’s eyes widened.
Not from strength.
Blue symbols appeared between Shen Liang’s fingers and the metal.
The weapon was deflected.
"Don’t fight the interface," Xue Lian said. "It’s connected to the core."
Chen Mo attacked from the side.
His hand passed through one of the lines coming from the altar.
The energy vanished the instant it entered the void around him.
Shen Liang finally reacted.
His gaze shifted to Chen Mo.
"Interesting."
"Everyone says that today."
Chen Mo grabbed another chain.
The light went out for several seconds.
Damon felt the pain lessen.
"He’s cutting the connection!"
"Temporarily," Xue Lian replied.
Damon took a deep breath.
"That’s enough."
He stood.
Ester remained beside him.
"Don’t use the root."
"Why?"
"The mark is waiting for exactly that."
Damon realized it.
The more structures he activated, the more data and connections he offered.
"Then Heavenly Body?"
"That too."
"I just got those things back."
"Your problem."
Damon drew the ordinary sword.
"Back to basics."
Shen Liang smiled.
"That is why you are suitable."
Damon advanced.
No ice.
No root.
No authority.
Only physical speed.
Shen Liang dodged the first strike.
Damon turned and attacked again.
The interface raised an arm.
The sword passed through.
No blood.
Filaments.
Damon pulled the blade free and kicked his knee.
The leg folded.
Shen Liang fell.
"Your body is terrible."
"It was not made to fight."
"Better for me."
A chain came out of the core and pierced the floor.
Damon stepped back.
It struck where his foot had been.
The symbol at its tip opened like a flower.
Transfer.
"Don’t let that touch you!" Xue Lian shouted.
"I was planning not to."
Another chain came.
Jian Yue cut it.
The ancestral sword shone.
This time, the chain was truly severed.
Shen Liang turned his head.
The first genuine emotion appeared.
Surprise.
Damon saw it.
"That hurt."
"No."
"Your face said it did."
Aria started laughing despite the situation.
Jian Yue attacked another chain.
Xue Lian realized it.
"The sword belongs to the original network. It can deny the artificial connection."
Damon smiled.
"Then keep cutting."
"With pleasure."
Jian Yue moved.
One chain.
Two.
Three.
Each cut produced a short explosion of blue light.
Shen Liang retreated toward the altar.
Chen Mo kept one hand over one of the main connections.
Mu Qing began examining the symbols on the floor.
"There are four transfer channels!"
"How many are left?" Damon asked.
"Three!"
Jian Yue cut another.
"Two!"
Shen Liang raised one hand.
The symbols on the walls lit up.
Aria noticed first.
"Floor!"
Damon jumped.
Blue lines exploded beneath his feet.
Ester was pulled away by Xue Lian.
Mu Qing retreated.
Yun Shuo did not have time.
A line caught his ankle.
"Shit!"
Damon turned.
So did Shen Liang.
The core pulsed.
The connection immediately changed direction.
From Damon’s mark.
To Yun Shuo.
Damon understood.
"It’s looking for another anchor!"
Yun Shuo went pale.
Conductor blood.
Compatibility with Heshan.
"CUT IT!"
Jian Yue struck.
The sword passed through the line before it reached Yun Shuo’s chest.
He fell backward.
Ester pulled him away.
Damon looked at Shen Liang.
"You said you wanted me."
"I want stability."
"So anyone will do."
"No."
Shen Liang pointed at Damon.
"You will do better."
The mark opened completely.
Damon screamed.
This time, something entered.
Not energy.
Memory.
A white room.
Shen Liang standing in front of dozens of children.
Another image.
Symbols being drawn on bodies.
Another.
A young Xue Lian unconscious on a table.
Another.
A woman screaming.
Her mother.
Damon fell onto his hands.
"Damon!"
He heard Ester from far away.
The memory continued.
Shen Liang arguing with someone.
He could not see the face.
"She can’t withstand it."
"Then replace her."
"We’ll lose the vessel."
"There are others."
The scene changed.
A wall.
The same compatibility list.
87%.
Xue Lian.
93%.
The erased name.
Damon tried to look.
The memory resisted.
He forced it.
The letters began to appear.
Shen Liang shouted from outside.
"GET OUT OF THAT!"
Damon smiled inside his own head.
"Now I’m definitely looking."
The name appeared.
Not complete.
Only two fragments.
Val... cair.
Damon froze.
Valcair.
The memory was torn away.
He returned to his body.
Blood ran from his nose.
Ester was holding his face.
"Look at me."
Damon breathed.
"I am."
"What happened?"
He looked at Shen Liang.
The interface was furious.
For the first time.
Damon began to laugh.
Xue Lian frowned.
"What did you see?"
Damon wiped away the blood.
"Something he didn’t want me to."
Shen Liang stood completely upright.
The cracks in the artificial body increased.
"You should not be able to access the Continuity."
"You’re the one who tried to get inside my head."
"I was transferring instructions."
"You sent too much data."
Aria raised her notebook.
"Name."
Damon looked at her.
She knew that expression.
"What name?"
Damon stared at Shen Liang.
"Valcair."
The corridor fell silent.
Ester stopped.
Xue Lian frowned.
Shen Liang said nothing.
Damon noticed.
"You know it."
"It is an old name."
"For me too."
The mark pulsed again.
Damon did not retreat.
"Seraphine Valcair did not start this story."
Shen Liang went still.
"No."
"Neither did Vorn."
"No."
Damon smiled without humor.
"So the Valcair were already involved with the Architects before either of them was born."
Xue Lian looked at him.
"You’re certain of the name?"
"I saw it on the list."
"What compatibility?"
"Ninety-three."
She lost all color.
The candidate who had been better than Xue Lian.
The name scraped from the wall.
Valcair.
Mu Qing looked at Damon.
"If that bloodline survived..."
"Then Arven wasn’t chosen by accident," he replied.
Shen Liang closed his eyes.
Damon noticed.
"That’s why Vorn was there."
Nothing.
"Not because of Seraphine."
Nothing.
"Because of the land."
Shen Liang opened his eyes.
"You understand too quickly."
"Or you talk too much."
The core pulsed.
The remaining chains began to move.
Xue Lian shouted.
"Damon, behind you!"
He turned.
A chain was centimeters from his back.
Too late to dodge.
It touched him.
The false Seed on his arm exploded.
Not into light.
Into lines.
Hundreds of them crossed Damon’s body.
And for the first time, Shen Liang smiled like someone who truly believed he had won.
"Finally."
Damon stood still.
His eyes lowered toward his own chest.
A blue line appeared beneath the skin.
Then another.
And another.
Ester ran toward him.
"DAMON!"
Shen Liang spread his arms.
The black core responded.
"Continuity accepted."
Damon slowly raised his head.
His eyes had changed.
One remained red.
Across the other, a thin white line appeared through the pupil.
Xue Lian froze.
Shen Liang smiled.
"Now we have a body."
