Elowen stood in the middle of the eastern treatment wing’s corridor, tilting her head to thank the doctor who had just wheeled a medicine cart away. She meant to head back to Felyn’s room, but she’d taken only two steps when her pointed ears twitched. Amid the hospital’s familiar smells of medicine, herbs, and magical disinfectant, something far sweeter was quietly spreading through the air.

Elowen inhaled lightly, and her face immediately turned red.

As a Succubus, she naturally understood what that scent signified. What confused her more was how familiar it was, as though it belonged to someone she had seen not long ago.

Elowen’s gaze settled on the private room door beside her. Before she could step toward it, a lock clicked softly from within.

Click.

The first person to step out was Erik. His shirt had been straightened out properly, only the collar slightly wrinkled, and his black hair was a little messier than before. Behind him came Meira in her usual white dress, except her long golden hair had been smoothed back rather hastily, and her collar sat suspiciously higher than normal.

Both of them saw Elowen at the same time.

The air went quiet immediately.

"Mom?" Elowen blinked. "What were you two doing in there?"

Meira reacted faster than Erik. She stepped out, pulled the door shut behind her, and produced a smile so natural it was practically seamless. "I was telling Erik about the results of your examination. We’d just finished when I heard your voice out in the hallway."

"Is that so?" Elowen nodded, but her eyes happened to drift across her mother’s neck. Between the slightly crooked fabric, a strip of black leather was showing. She tilted her head, her curiosity growing. "Mom, what’s that?"

Meira immediately had a bad feeling. "What’s what?"

"A choker?" Elowen pointed at her collar. "You’ve never liked wearing jewelry on your neck, and besides, that looks more like leather."

Meira’s fingers tugged her collar a little higher. "It’s just an accessory that came with a dress I tried on this morning. I forgot to take it off."

Elowen looked at the white dress her mother was wearing, then back at the neckline now thoroughly covered. "That dress comes with a choker?"

"It does."

Meira answered almost instantly, forcing Erik to turn his face aside to hide the twitching at the corner of his mouth. He honestly hadn’t expected a matriarch as unshakably composed as Meira to end up flustered by her own daughter’s questions.

Fortunately, Elowen was still riding the high from her talent examination and quickly forgot the whole thing. She stepped over and hugged Erik’s arm, her emerald eyes shining.

"Oh, right, Erik! They confirmed my new talent."

"What rank?"

"Epic rank!" The moment Elowen said it, her pointed ears shot up. "The doctors ran the test three times. At first they thought the equipment was malfunctioning. They said the bloodline in my body has partially awakened, and my affinity with the Wind element is much higher than before."

Erik smiled and reached out to stroke her soft silver hair. "Congratulations."

Two simple words made Elowen’s smile even more radiant. She squeezed his arm, her cheeks flushing slightly. "I know this has something to do with you. Without the Contract and the energy you gave me, I probably never would have known something like this was inside me."

"Even if I had a hand in it, that power is still yours." Erik looked at her. "Put it to good use."

"Mm!"

Elowen nodded hard, then began excitedly recounting all the changes in her body. Meira stood behind them watching the two of them in silence, her gaze lingering on Erik for a moment. When Elowen turned her head the other way, she gave him a slight wink.

Erik immediately looked out the window.

’This woman really is getting more troublesome by the day.’

But what gave him a bigger headache was realizing he didn’t seem to mind that particular kind of trouble at all.

...

Over four hundred kilometers from Silver Moon, the western edge of the Safety Belt had turned into an entirely different sort of hell.

A heavy grey sky hung over the wasteland. The city wall, more than thirty meters high, stretched all the way to the horizon, but the magical script carved into it now only flickered weakly. The enormous barrier dome that had covered the area behind it was riddled with cracks, shuddering as though it might shatter every time the sea of Undead crashed against it.

Beyond the wall were countless corpses with no end in sight. They had human shapes, but their flesh had rotted away, green fire burning in their eye sockets, long black nails scraping endlessly across the stone face. Behind that army, Necromancers in black cloaks stood atop mounds of earth, and every time they raised their staffs, the bodies that had just fallen shuddered and crawled back up.

"Squad Seven, fall back!"

"Undead climbing up on the left!"

"Don’t let them touch the Barrier Crystal!"

Shouts rang out along the length of the wall. Succubi with any fight left in them ran through blood, stone dust, and the bodies of their comrades. One fell, another immediately stepped up to take her place, because no one had time to stop and grieve.

BOOM!

An Undead nearly three meters tall slammed its arm into the wall’s edge. The outer layer of stone split apart, and five Succubi standing nearby were thrown clear. Two struck the stone parapet, their bodies going limp before sliding down; the other three fell straight into the sea of corpses below.

The screaming lasted only a few seconds.

"On the right!" Lyra shouted, raising her burning sword. "They’re pouring in through the stairwell!"

The brown-haired Succubus charged forward and severed the head of an Undead that had just crawled over the ledge. Black blood sprayed across her cheek, but Lyra had no time to wipe it. Another lunged at her instantly, claws tearing through the armor on her shoulder. The pain made her stagger, but a comrade behind her drove a staff through the creature’s eye socket in time.

"Mira, are you all right?"

"I’m fine." The short-haired girl answered, but her breathing had already turned ragged. The magical shield around her flickered on and off. "My personal barrier is regenerating too slowly. I just took a potion, but my mana still isn’t coming back."

Lyra started to say something, but a sharp pain suddenly shot through her chest.

The Contract mark on her skin flared hot then rapidly went cold. The resonance thread that had always existed between her and her Partner suddenly turned fragile, like a string stretched to its breaking point.

Lyra pressed a hand to her chest, her face white.

"Your Partner..." Mira looked at her. "Did he leave the area?"

"I don’t know." Lyra swallowed hard. She opened her comm device and sent message after message, but the screen only displayed one cold line: Outside connection range. "He said he’d be in the command bunker."

Mira didn’t answer. Because at that very moment, panic came flooding through every channel on the comm network.

"Squad Four reporting, my connection is weakening!"

"My Partner is gone!"

"I can’t feel him anymore!"

"Can anyone reach the command zone? Tell them not to leave!"

No one answered.

All along the wall, more and more Succubi paused for a brief half second, hands clutching the marks on their chests or wrists. No one needed to explain it to them. The power from a Contract didn’t vanish all at once, but that familiar warmth was fading, taking with it their mana regeneration, their durability, and the sense of safety they had always leaned on.

Crack!

A new fissure appeared in the barrier over Wall Three. The silver-white light flickered a few times, then went out entirely. Hundreds of Undead outside surged toward the weak point all at once, their howling draining the color from the faces of the Succubi on the wall.

"Hold your positions!" A woman’s voice rang out from the front. "Squad Three, with me!"

Nivoria came flying up the stairwell, the black-and-red polearm in her hands trailing a long streak of fire. Her golden hair was a tangled mess of blood and sweat, and the red-black battle armor she wore had cracked in numerous places, but the aura around her steadied every Succubus nearby.

She leapt onto the wall’s edge and swept the polearm across.

Orange-red flames erupted through the horde of Undead. Seven of the monsters were cut clean in half, their torsos burning as they dropped away below. Another Undead lunged from behind; Nivoria twisted aside from its claws, broke its leg with her knee, and drove her blade through its skull.

"Don’t just stand there gaping!" Nivoria roared. "If they get over this wall, everyone behind us dies!"

Her voice pulled the panicking Succubi back to themselves. Lyra gripped her sword, Mira raised her staff, and one by one the rest returned to their positions. They fought again, killed again, and used mana that was nearly spent to plug every crack.

But the battlefield wouldn’t let them hold onto their nerve for long.

A young Succubus at the end of the line had just driven back an Undead when she suddenly collapsed to her knees. She stared at the comm device in her hand, tears falling without stopping.

"I’ve called him thirteen times." Her voice shook violently. "He’s gone. He really did leave me behind."

Three Undead lunged at once. Lyra ran the fastest, her sword cutting down two of them, but the last one had already driven its claws through the armor beneath the girl’s ribs. She fell, both hands still clutching the comm device.

"Don’t let them... get inside..."
