Chapter 1223 - 1222: Escape

Chapter 1223: Chapter 1222: Escape

Zhao Shuai walked a few steps forward and greeted a man in front of him, "Uncle Li." After speaking, Zhao Shuai smiled and walked over to the man’s side.

It was only then that Jiang Cheng noticed the Uncle Li Zhao Shuai was calling. He looked about fifty years old, dressed in black, with a serious expression, not at all friendly, but exuding an aura, and you could tell he was quite good-looking when he was younger.

"Uncle Li, I was just looking for you. Can you take us to find my dad?" Zhao Shuai said, tugging at Uncle Li’s sleeve with an intimate demeanor.

Uncle Li glanced at Jiang Cheng hesitantly, Jiang Cheng nodded at the man, "Hmm, the boss sent me to greet you," said Uncle Li.

Jiang Cheng and Zhao Shuai followed Uncle Li to a room at the far end of the first floor. "Here you are, go in," said Uncle Li before leaving.

"Cool, huh?" Zhao Shuai winked at Jiang Cheng, "He’s also my dad’s assistant, you could say he’s a friend. He’s really nice, just a bit cold." Zhao Shuai remarked.

Jiang Cheng looked at Uncle Li’s departing silhouette, upright and firm.

"Let’s go in." Jiang Cheng said.

After Jiang Cheng and Zhao Shuai entered the room, Zhao Shuai gasped in shock. Jiang Cheng hadn’t yet seen the scene inside and didn’t know what was wrong with Zhao Shuai. But when Jiang Cheng saw the people inside, he was also shocked, although not as overwhelmed as Zhao Shuai because he knew this person all along was not content.

The person under interrogation was Wu Shan. Jiang Cheng felt a pang of sympathy as he saw the bright woman he met in the Dark Cosmos now looking so pale.

"Dad, are you sure you didn’t catch the wrong person?" Zhao Shuai asked uncertainly, disbelief written all over his face.

"How could it be? There’s surveillance evidence showing it’s her," the boss replied.

Jiang Cheng noticed besides Wu Shan and the boss, there was a young man in the room wearing a police uniform, presumably part of the team interrogating Wu Fen.

"What? You know her?" the boss asked.

At this point, Zhao Shuai was very shocked, but also somewhat heartbroken, he had feelings for Wu Shan, not only because she resembled the class flower from his college days, but he also felt affinity towards Wu Shi. But now, seeing Wu sitting here, he really didn’t know if everything before was fake.

"Yeah." Zhao Shuai couldn’t say much.

Jiang Cheng looked at Zhao Shuai’s dazed form with some sympathy but didn’t tell Zhao Shuai before about Wu’s odd behavior.

Wu Shi was also shocked, but it was brief. She did not lower her gaze during her eye contact with Jiang Cheng.

Jiang Cheng looked into Wu’s eyes filled with surprise, sympathy, but not regret.

"Boss, have you found anything?" Jiang Cheng asked.

"The only thing we can confirm is she has accomplices, but we can’t trace them, and she hasn’t uttered a single word," the boss said looking at Jiang Cheng, "We know her, let’s try asking," Jiang Cheng suggested.

"Alright, I should leave. I have a lot of things to deal with, and by the way, Jiang, I haven’t thanked you yet for curing the virus yesterday," the boss said to Jiang Cheng.

...

"It’s nothing, you go handle your affairs. The virus was my responsibility," Jiang Cheng replied.

Zhao Shuai hadn’t said a word the whole time, only bidding his father goodbye.

Jiang Cheng and Zhao Shuai sat opposite Wu Shan. Even Jiang Cheng hadn’t expected to meet Wu Shan here, not knowing how to begin.

"You’re Wu, right?" Zhao Shuai said softly, really having a hard time accepting his goddess had fallen from grace, and was in such a place.

"I am Wu." Wu Shi smiled, the same familiar smile to Jiang Cheng and Zhao Shuai, once beautiful, now painfully glaring.

"You know the network information paralysis not only makes communication inconvenient, it could lead to casualties, do you know?" Jiang Cheng said.

Wu Shan’s eyes flickered with a momentary disbelief, but it was brief.

"I’ve suspected you for a long time; was the Imperial Capital seminar incident also your doing?" Jiang Cheng asked, suspecting Wu Shan was from Li Country if she admitted.

"It was me." Wu Shan said looking at Jiang Cheng, without any concealment, eyes clear all along.

Zhao Shuai sat next to Jiang Cheng, staying silent. Looking at Wu Shan like this, Jiang Cheng felt unfamiliar, not knowing what to say.

"Well, I’ve finished asking, let the officers continue," Jiang Cheng said to the officer present.

The rest of the matters were beyond his jurisdiction, and Jiang Cheng doubted Wu Shan would speak.

"Let’s go, Shuai," Jiang Cheng said looking at the disengaged Zhao Shuai.

"Oh, yeah, um." Zhao Shuai snapped back and, after giving Wu Shan one last look, prepared to leave with Jiang Cheng.

"Jiang Cheng," Wu Shan called out to Jiang Cheng. Jiang Cheng stopped, turned to look at Wu Shan, "I’m sorry." Wu Shan said lowering her head.

Jiang Cheng saw Wu Shan’s pale, defeated face, a far cry from her glamour at first meeting. He couldn’t bear it, feeling she had her reasons, "You shouldn’t apologize to me," Jiang Cheng said before leaving the room.

"Let’s go check the surveillance video, Shuai," Jiang Cheng said.

After a while, there was no reaction from Zhao Shuai; Jiang Cheng waved his hand in front of him, "Hey? What’s the matter with you?"

"Oh, huh, what did you say?" Zhao Shuai suddenly snapped back to reality.

Jiang Cheng looked at Zhao Shuai’s vacant look, "Why don’t you go rest first," Jiang Cheng thought Zhao Shuai wasn’t in good spirits, and worried something worse from Wu Shan might be unbearable for Zhao Shuai, having underestimated Wu Shan’s importance to Zhao Shuai.

"Yeah, good idea, I’ll go rest first. Uncle Li is here, you can find him if you need anything. Come back early when you’re done," Zhao Shuai said with a smile at Jiang Cheng.

Jiang Cheng watched Zhao Shuai’s departing figure with some reluctance, thinking Zhao Shuai’s move was more of an escape; clearly, this incident had a significant impact on him.

Uncle Li came over to Jiang Cheng, "Mr. Jiang, what do you want to see?

"Hey, no need, Uncle Li, just call me Jiang. I’d like to see the surveillance footage now," Jiang Cheng said.

Upon hearing this, Uncle Li led Jiang Cheng to another room, "Here it is," Jiang Cheng saw a room with a computer and a large display screen on the wall. Three officers inside were watching Wu Shan’s surveillance.

Uncle Li went over and said a few words to the officers, who then all looked at Jiang Cheng respectfully before leaving, leaving only Jiang Cheng and Uncle Li in the monitoring room.

"Would you like to watch alone or with company?" Uncle Li asked.

Jiang Cheng heard Uncle Li hadn’t changed how he addressed him, but he didn’t insist, "I’ll watch alone, Uncle Li, why don’t you go take care of your tasks, I’m fine alone, don’t let me hold you up," Jiang Cheng felt a bit awkward with Uncle Li present, who besides being the boss’s assistant had an easy disposition, doing his job efficiently, but really shouldn’t be beside him.
