Li Yifei also stepped aside, quietly watching this woman in red high heels, carrying a red handbag, walk into the mourning hall. Her wailing broke the silence in the hall and disturbed the quiet of the small village. After all, it was just past four in the morning. Her wails shocked even the neighbors awake.
The Yang Family was fully alerted too, coming out to see Song Shuang leaning on the coffin, crying. Skinny Monkey’s mother hesitated, then slowly walked over, patting Song Shuang on the back, comforting her, "Little Shuang, he’s gone, you... don’t be too sad!"
"Boo hoo hoo, Auntie, how could this happen? We... we were about to get married. How could Yang Yang die? Wasn’t he just attending a comrade’s wedding?" Song Shuang cried, eyes red, her body starting to sway, as if in utter despair.
Her crying and questioning rekindled the Yang Family’s grief, many quietly shed tears, with Skinny Monkey’s mother sighing, "What’s done is done, we must face reality. Yang Yang’s comrades brought him back, and the country has awarded him honors..."
"What are honors worth? No amount of money can bring him back, Auntie, he’s gone!" Song Shuang shouted tearfully.
No compensation was given! Li Yifei stood outside, thinking to himself while watching Song Shuang cry. He instinctively felt some aversion. Asked why... her tears seemed insincere, reminiscent of ’dry cries sans tears.’ True grief-stricken weeping doesn’t sound like this. Song Shuang’s sobs seemed more like mere whispers than uncontrollable sorrow.
Li Yifei frowned as he listened to Skinny Monkey’s mother say, "Honors are good; Yang Yang valued them after serving in the military for so many years!"
"That’s not enough. Dying for the country demands not only honors but compensation. I’ve heard that deaths like this warrant significant compensation!" Song Shuang wiped her tears defiantly and said, "Auntie, are you saying there are only honors and not compensation or death benefits? That won’t do; where are Yang Yang’s comrades? I have questions for them."
Everyone else had gone to find people, leaving Li Yifei as the sole presence in the Yang Family’s courtyard. Attention naturally fell on him, for the unforeseen incident within the mourning hall wasn’t something everyone wanted to witness. Narrowing his eyes, he said indifferently, "I am Yang Yang’s captain. Honors are a must. As for compensation... Auntie, don’t worry. The organization will arrange and provide it."
"Oh? So there is compensation?" Skinny Monkey’s mother remained silent, but Song Shuang spoke cynically, striding over. Her questioning gaze met Li Yifei’s stoically. Standing in her heels, they looked eye-to-eye. Though Li Yifei disliked her demeanor, he only nodded lightly, "Yes, there is such payment."
"Compensation depends on the amount. A living person goes to a wedding and ends up sacrificing for the nation while you all remain unharmed—it’s baffling. Quickly give us the death benefits!" Song Shuang demanded with self-righteousness.
Li Yifei eyed her sternly, assuring, "Rest assured, this payment will come without any mishap."
"Auntie, don’t take it to heart. Yang Yang is gone. I’m striving for your benefit; you’ll need to keep living," Song Shuang turned to Skinny Monkey’s parents.
Skinny Monkey’s sister approached, confronting Song Shuang, "Little Shuang, what were you doing yesterday? You answered my call only to hang up, then turned off your phone."
This was also the question Li Yifei wanted to ask, though his position was unsuitable. Skinny Monkey’s sister asked the crucial question instead. With concern flashing on her face, Song Shuang pursed her lips, responding, "Sis, I was utterly devastated upon hearing the news and fainted. My phone broke when it fell, shutting off. After regaining consciousness, I gathered myself and rushed here."
"So you just found out yesterday?" Skinny Monkey’s sister pressed further; Yang Yang’s death hadn’t been a secret until then. Skinny Monkey’s parents had told Song Shuang shortly after learning themselves.
Song Shuang quickly replied, "I was prepared for it, but when I heard he... came back, I couldn’t bear it. Sis, it’s my fault for faltering, but with Yang Yang gone, the living must carry on."
"Ha! Dressed as you are, hardly seems weak. Song Shuang, maybe change before coming here. Your striking red attire is quite garish."
"Sis, I didn’t have time to change yesterday. Besides... Yang Yang liked me in red. I wanted him to see it one last time!" As she spoke, Song Shuang covered her face, seemingly overcome with grief again.
Thus, Skinny Monkey’s sister chose not to argue further. Skinny Monkey’s parents softened, tears falling for a life so abruptly snuffed out. As parents, the loss was unbearable.
Li Yifei felt Song Shuang’s cries were insincere. If she truly cared, how could grief manifest like this... Shouldn’t true sorrow be genuine and overwhelming, rather than seeming false and disruptive?
His phone vibrated. Seeing a call from Dumb Guy, Li Yifei stepped away from the crowd to answer.
"Boss, we’ve found some things," Dumb Guy reported sharply.
"Speak," Li Yifei replied in a low voice.
"Last night, Skinny Monkey’s girlfriend checked into a five-star hotel. We obtained check-in records and vehicle logs, though the room wasn’t booked under her name but a man’s. Reviewing surveillance showed they checked in by noon, briefly went out for dinner nearby, then returned until just a while ago, leaving by car with unknown destination. We reached but they were gone." Dumb Guy rapidly laid out the findings.
Li Yifei squinted and asked, "Are you certain?"
"Certain, evidence confirmed it. We’ve secured hotel security footage and room details. I seek your direction on whether to secure the room. A man and woman spending the night is odd—Boss, I suspect..."
"Song Shuang just drove over, wailed in the mourning hall a bit," Li Yifei interjected.
"What? She visited Skinny Monkey?" Dumb Guy exclaimed, words faltering. Earlier, he strongly suspected an affair, but hearing of her visit to Skinny Monkey rendered him speechless.
Li Yifei affirmed, "Yes, she just arrived."
"This... this woman is suspicious. I stand by our findings!" Dumb Guy insisted, his voice replaced by an agitated Zhang Tianxing, "Boss, tracking that man showed over thirty check-ins locally within a year, ten in the provincial capital, even more across top hotels nationwide like in the South Sea. City records were under his ID, others together with hers, undeniably proving connections."
Ending his report emotionally, Zhang Tianxing fumed, "Occasional innocence aside, so many visits hint at another truth—our brother Skinny Monkey’s been played! His ever-doting girlfriend cheated repeatedly, even traveled together."
The investigators were livid; they couldn’t accept Skinny Monkey’s beloved girlfriend’s infidelity, blatant over the year and extensively traveled. Zhang Tianxing implored, "Even last night... they stayed together, Boss, this can’t be dismissed lightly! How could this deceitful woman feel anything for Skinny Monkey? Knowing he’s gone, yet still consorting elsewhere—I could rip her apart!"
Li Yifei realized then why something felt off—the woman cheated, her heart elsewhere for a long time, making her fake tears and awkward words offensive.
If love faded, things could end amicably. But squandering his money while secretly involved with another defined her character and morals. Realizing this, Li Yifei thought Song Shuang’s cries in the mourning hall were laughably ironic.
Before losing his temper, he asked, "The man’s identity investigated?"
"Ongoing, preliminary results show the man’s father is an official. He studied in the United States, has some wealth, owning a company, with some status. Regularly drives a Lamborghini and often sleeps with various women... Yet that’s not key. Key is he dared touch our brother’s woman; I’ll deal with him!"
"Continue investigating, gather solid evidence. Stay calm till morning!" Li Yifei instructed, "The woman remains here; she’s going nowhere. You carry on your work; I’ll observe her antics and intent!"
"Understood!" Zhang Tianming quickly voiced.
Ending the call, Li Yifei’s gaze turned icy. Song Shuang’s broken sobs earlier sounded insincere but now seemed downright mocking. Last night, she knew of Yang Yang’s return, yet lodged at a hotel with another man. Now she sobbed before the coffin—how ironic!
