Chapter 2304: Chapter 2305: Companions

As the rope snapped apart, the elder before Lin Chen suddenly froze in the middle of the hand seal he had formed.

Then his figure could be seen swaying like a falling leaf caught in a gale, staggering back several steps as a mouthful of fresh blood gushed out of his lips.

That Spiritual Technique was linked to the elder’s qi. At the instant it was shattered with a boom, he felt it in his own body as well. His hands trembled, and he looked at Lin Chen with some horror, shouting, "Impossible!"

Anyone touched by that Spiritual Technique, unless their cultivation far surpassed the elder’s, would, once ensnared, have the Spiritual Energy in their Dantian sealed, making it naturally impossible for them to move in the slightest.

In his understanding, no one had ever broken free of it with such brute force. Moreover, the aura emanating from the Lin Chen before him clearly did not surpass his own. How could the elder possibly remain calm?

"You’ve simply seen too little."

Lin Chen replied coolly. He shook his arm, as if to fling away the remnants of rope still clinging to it. That Spiritual Technique was merely for binding; Lin Chen had torn it apart, and had not suffered the slightest substantive injury.

He turned his head, his gaze coldly locking onto Jiang Wei, and said, "Do you have anything else you want to ask?"

Lin Chen’s gaze was icy, like that of a wild beast. When it fell on Jiang Wei, it stirred a wave of discomfort in him. He knew the elder’s strength, yet Lin Chen had broken his technique so easily, which in itself indicated that Lin Chen’s true power was not to be underestimated.

Could someone like this really have been sent by the Fang Clan...?

Jiang Wei couldn’t help thinking that among the younger generation of the Fang Clan, he had never heard of such a figure.

With that thought, Jiang Wei’s expression eased. The sternness on his face shifted into a faint smile; he bent slightly toward Lin Chen in apology and said, "It seems we were overthinking. I hope young hero will not take offense."

Lin Chen glanced at Jiang Wei with slight surprise, silently praising him in his heart. At this moment Jiang Wei was indeed not without merit: he could yield as well as advance. It was just a pity that he insisted on trading his own daughter’s happiness for benefit. Lin Chen deeply despised such behavior.

Even so, Lin Chen had no right to interfere too much. As an outsider, it was truly difficult to involve himself in such private matters, and besides, none of these people had shown any intention of seeking Lin Chen’s help.

"Since there’s nothing else, we’ll part ways here. If you obstruct me again, I will kill."

Lin Chen gave Jiang Wei a cold sidelong glance. That beast-like, razor-sharp gaze made Jiang Wei’s heart shudder. Even though he was already at the ninth level of the Spirit Pill realm, Lin Chen still made him feel an indescribable sense of dread.

Lin Chen’s words were spoken lightly, yet Jiang Wei did not doubt their truth in the slightest.

"Clan Leader, this man so utterly disregards our Jiang Clan; he cannot be allowed to go!"

The elder from earlier coughed dryly and spoke thus, his tone brimming with anger. As he spoke, blood unconsciously dripped from his mouth, staining his white beard red.

Jiang Wei frowned. The elder was named Jiang Husheng, a loyal family retainer, but his breadth of mind was far too narrow; his conduct from just now till now made that obvious.

"Please stay, young hero."

After a moment, Jiang Wei still called out to Lin Chen. His expression remained gentle. Seeing Lin Chen’s unchanging, indifferent look, he hurriedly continued, "I mean no other offense. It’s just... if you don’t mind, young friend, why not come with me to take a look up ahead?"

What he referred to as "up ahead" was naturally the direction where the treasure lay.

Everyone in Qingmu City had heard of the treasure in this forest. Naturally, as a great clan, the Jiang family could not fail to receive news of it. Jiang Wei had come precisely for that reason. He had lingered in the Spirit Pill realm long enough and needed to rely on certain external objects to break through his current bottleneck.

He simply hadn’t expected to run into Jiang Ningyan here; that was something of an unexpected gain.

"Not interested." Lin Chen still needed to search for Soul-Returning Grass.

Jiang Wei froze again. After a brief daze, he continued, "So young hero did not come here for that treasure?"

"Father, he came for Soul-Returning Grass, not for the thing in the forest."

Jiang Ningyan, standing behind him, explained.

Then she pointed at Tang Ming to the side and said, "Why not let Father take us along as well? Perhaps we can be of some help."

"Yes, Uncle Jiang," Tang Ming chimed in.

"You?"

Jiang Wei shook his head, a mix of sigh and disdain in his eyes. A mere Refining Spirit realm cultivator—how much help could he possibly be?

The Lin Chen before him, however, was different. With his assistance, Lin Chen might become a great help. If Jiang Wei could break through to the Spirit Fetus realm, then perhaps...

Jiang Wei’s eyes flickered.

"If young hero is seeking Soul-Returning Grass, then perhaps I can be of some assistance."

After pondering for a moment, Jiang Wei spoke thus. As soon as these words left his mouth, Lin Chen, who had been about to leave, finally halted his steps.

"You have it?" Lin Chen asked.

"Not at the moment. But in Qingmu City, there may be people who possess such an item. As long as we offer enough price, we should be able to gather some."

"Then what do you want me to do?"

Lin Chen turned back and asked. There was no free dinner in this world; Lin Chen understood this very clearly, and naturally would not naïvely think Jiang Wei had the leisure to help him for nothing.

"I merely hope young hero can, within the scope of your ability, lend me a helping hand," Jiang Wei said.

"And if you fail to obtain that thing?" Lin Chen rubbed his fingers, speaking softly.

"Regardless of success or failure, as long as young hero has aided me, the promised item will naturally be offered up," Jiang Wei said without a trace of hesitation, answering the moment Lin Chen finished speaking.

"Clan Leader, you mustn’t!"

The elder from earlier was horrified. The man he had injured just moments ago was now actually being invited by Jiang Wei as a helper. This made him feel that his face had been utterly lost, his complexion turning a mix of blue and red.

"Very well, I agree."

After a brief contemplation, Lin Chen accepted Jiang Wei’s terms. Soul-Returning Grass was indeed urgent, but to search blindly like this would do nothing but waste time and achieve no effect.

"Elder Husheng, I’ll trouble you with this matter, then."

Upon hearing Lin Chen’s consent, joy flashed across Jiang Wei’s face. He then turned to Jiang Husheng, his gaze turning cold.

At Jiang Wei’s words, Jiang Husheng’s expression visibly stiffened. He sighed lightly; though he was extremely unwilling, he was at least loyal and had no intention of defying Jiang Wei. After answering Jiang Wei, he glared viciously at Lin Chen, then flew off toward the outer edge of the mountain forest, unwilling yet forced.

"If you two are willing, you may come along as well."

Jiang Wei’s words were naturally directed at Jiang Ningyan and Tang Ming. The reason he allowed them to follow was perhaps also because of Lin Chen—after all, they had just arrived together with Lin Chen.
