Chapter 2356: Chapter 2357: Stab in the Back
"They have been gone for almost a day now, they should have already reached that place. We must quicken our pace."
Chen Lin said this as he took out the Spirit Boat from the Storage Ring. The Spirit Boat was unusually broad and exceptionally fast, perfectly suited for long-distance travel.
Lin Chen had seen this object before, yet he still felt a sense of peculiar fascination.
By now, night had fallen, and in the cool night air, a solitary Yin Yue hung high in the sky, shedding a silvery glow that bathed the earth in a blanket of silver.
Within this silver glow, there was a spot of mottled black beneath the crescent moon, as if it were a smudge of ink, marking the Yin Yue with an indelible trace.
This should be what Lin Chen had noticed before, only now, enveloped by the night, the black spot appeared even more terrifying, seeming more viscous than the night itself, etched upon it.
"Rest for a while to preserve your energy, just in case." Chen Lin maneuvered the Spirit Boat swiftly, speaking to Lin Chen and Sun Tianming.
With an unknown distance still ahead, that distant black spot allowed Lin Chen and his companions a chance to rest.
The way forward was silent, and Lin Chen immersed himself in cultivation, restoring a great deal of the Spiritual Energy he had expended.
...
No one knew how much time had passed when a distant rumbling suddenly erupted. The sound was immense, and the waves of noise it released rippled outward, making the trees and grasses in the forest tremble and rustle.
Jolted awake by the din, Lin Chen opened his eyes and emerged from his cultivation state.
Before him, the black spot beneath the Yin Yue had grown considerably. It now resembled a humanoid figure, yet it was far larger than any ordinary person.
"Are we there yet?"
Lin Chen approached Chen Lin, who was staring grimly into the distance.
"We’re almost there; it seems conflict has already erupted there."
Chen Lin remarked, noting that the recent disturbances and sound waves were clearly evidence of conflict.
"Be ready and remain vigilant."
He glanced at Lin Chen and Sun Tianming, then swiftly piloted the Spirit Boat towards the turbulence like a giant silver shuttle.
"It seems your master taught you little else but lifesaving skills."
Below the distant black glow, on a high altar in the forest, several figures were gathered together.
The shadow separated by the central dais clearly divided into two groups.
Leading one of them was Lu Kang, whom Lin Chen had encountered before. He now stood at the altar’s forefront, seemingly oblivious to the crimson emanating from within it, his focus fixated on Liu Qinghan.
Liu Qinghan appeared a bit disheveled, yet his expression remained serene as he gazed at Lu Kang across the altar, before his gaze involuntarily fell, looking at the crimson trickling down the altar.
"Master has reasons for not teaching more. Besides, must one become like you, neither human nor ghost?"
Liu Qinghan replied softly, showing no fear. Were it not for Lu Kang, the Green Ripple Sect would not have ended up like this.
"Ha, is that so?"
Lu Kang let out a cold laugh, perhaps because he had suppressed his emotions for too long, making this laugh a bit menacing.
"Do you think you can stop me? Just with your half-baked skills? High cultivation is useless if you can’t wield it efficiently!"
Lu Kang said, his tone filled with anger.
Liu Qinghan had appeared after the clash between Lu Kang and Lu Qiming. Although Liu Qinghan was talented, he had joined the sect late, and all his cultivation realms were inherited from his master. Despite his high realm, his combat proficiency was inadequate.
"Even if I can’t stop you, I must try. Although my practical combat power is limited, the difference in our cultivation realms is not just marginal!"
Liu Qinghan turned, catching sight of Pan Su in agony behind him, sweat dotting his brow, his hair clinging to his forehead.
In Pan Su’s hand was a raised long staff.
The staff, as thick as a thumb, was carved with intricate engravings, imbuing it with an ancient aura.
Despite its exceptional nature, the staff was a struggle for Pan Su to hold aloft, causing his hand’s veins to bulge and tremble slightly.
From the sky, silver light seemed to fall, drawn to the long staff, causing its engravings to glimmer faintly.
"Master, how much longer? It seems Sect Master Liu can’t last much longer."
Beside Pan Su stood Tao Yuyu, asking seriously.
This long staff was the sacred artifact Pan Su had been sent to retrieve from the sect, and now in his hands, it felt familiar.
The bloodline’s power was at work, but even so, connecting the staff to the higher realm consumed immense effort.
Even as an elder, Pan Su struggled to channel it.
"We must wait a bit longer, I’m afraid."
Pan Su replied with difficulty, as the staff drained his energy. Were it not for the pills he had secretly taken to restore himself, Pan Su would be unable to continue.
Hearing this, Tao Yuyu sighed lightly, seemingly with a touch of regret.
"Given that..."
Tao Yuyu suddenly leaned towards Pan Su, whispering, "Why not stop using that thing altogether!"
A completely unexpected sound echoed in Pan Su’s ear.
Though it was whispered, it sent a chilling wave up from Pan Su’s heart, compelling him to turn with difficulty, only to see Tao Yuyu’s sly grin.
"You..."
Pan Su tried to inquire what Tao Yuyu meant by his previous words, yet before he could finish speaking, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his waist.
The glance he had directed at Tao Yuyu now slowly lowered, his gaze vacant as he looked at the blade piercing his abdomen, a trickle of crimson seeping out.
Even now, Pan Su’s face bore an incredulous expression. He scanned Tao Yuyu, seeking any trace of remorse.
But Tao Yuyu showed none; his face was calm, even cold, his gaze felt alien to Pan Su. Were it not undoubtedly his disciple, Pan Su would never have believed the one who stabbed him so viciously was his own student.
