Max wanted to curse, but he held the words inside as he looked across the Spirit Realm and saw how little mana remained within it. The colors that had once covered every part of the land were fading, countless spirits could barely keep their bodies upright, and if Max continued until there was nothing left for the realm to sustain itself, the entire place would collapse with him and everyone still connected to it.
He released his grip on the armrests and forced himself to stand.
"Spirit Sovereign!" Saelunith exclaimed, though her voice barely escaped her exhausted throat.
Max lowered his gaze toward her and saw the exhaustion filling her eyes. Her face had grown pale, her body trembled each time she attempted to move, and her fingers clutched desperately at his clothes as though holding him there was the only way to prevent everything they had done from being wasted.
However, Max could tell that continuing would eventually kill her along with the others.
Even the slightest distraction threatened his control over the magic gathered inside his body, yet he still reached down and carefully pushed Saelunith’s fingers away from his clothes.
"I’m heading out."
His voice remained as cold as ever, but something within it sounded different from before, carrying the faintest trace of the man he had once been, as though part of his former self was slowly returning from the darkness that had swallowed him.
"You can’t..." Saelunith reached for him again, but her exhausted body failed to move quickly enough.
Max forced himself to keep the magic inside him stable as his body transformed into its dragon hybrid form. Scales spread across his skin, wings tore from his back, and he launched himself away from the throne before Saelunith could catch him, rushing through the fading Spirit Realm toward its exit.
Everywhere he looked, Max saw what his attempt had done. The creatures inhabiting the realm lay motionless or struggled to move through lands that no longer possessed enough mana to support them, while flowers had collapsed against the soil and the multicolored streams had slowed until some barely continued flowing.
There was no telling how long it would take for the balance of the Spirit Realm to recover, or whether it could recover at all without his help. Max knew he would have to repair the damage if he succeeded, but even his survival remained uncertain while the Mana Heart was still incomplete and the void continued fighting against everything he attempted to create beside it.
"I need more mana," Max muttered as he approached the exit. "I have to draw it from the outside world, or else..."
His wings carried him through the pond, causing the water to warp around his body before exploding in every direction as he escaped the Spirit Realm. The moment his head broke through the surface, Max could taste mana upon his tongue and feel it surrounding every part of him.
The elven forest was filled with it.
His mana container began drawing in the surrounding mana with terrifying greed before sending the flow directly toward the void heart, which devoured everything so violently that the pressure spreading through Max’s head caused his temples to throb.
He flew above the trees while the mana continued following him, leaving the forest beneath him faster than he could control. Leaves lost their color, branches bent toward the ground, and the familiar hunger inside his chest grew stronger with every moment.
"For some reason, the rate at which I’m absorbing mana is increasing beyond my control," Max cursed as he looked down at the forest. "At this rate, the entire place will be emptied before I can get far enough away to save it."
For the first time since beginning the process, Max felt helpless before the hunger of his own heart. He understood that completing the Mana Heart would require more mana than the Spirit Realm could provide, but gathering that amount from the outside world meant destroying everything surrounding him before he could ever save it.
Max looked in one direction and then another, searching for somewhere richer in mana where the loss would not destroy his own people or the lands under his protection, until a particular destination entered his mind and an evil smirk slowly spread across his face.
Are we thinking the same thing, Max?
The voice inside his head returned, its sinister tone making the coldness within Max deepen as it understood his intention without needing him to explain it.
"For once, I agree with you."
Max spread his wings and launched himself forward at full speed, forcing his aching body to endure as darkness gradually spread through the whites of his eyes.
"It may be suicidal, but I will give you what you want, and you will give me what I need."
The path before him led toward the lands of the Imperial Court Empire, where every city, army and magical structure contained the mana required to continue forming his second heart.
"I’ll bring the war to them," Max said coldly as his speed continued increasing. "I will never allow them to touch my Voidstar."
He knew the plan might cost him his life, especially while every movement sent pain through his exhausted body and the unfinished magic inside his chest threatened to fall apart, but if completing the Mana Heart required him to drain an entire land of mana, he would rather tear that mana from his enemies than sacrifice the forests, spirits and people waiting behind him.
The farther Max flew, the more difficult it became to keep the magic inside his chest from collapsing. Every beat of the void heart pulled at the purified mana he had already reclaimed, attempting to drag it back into the darkness, while Max forced it to remain beside the heart and continued shaping it into the beginning of something separate.
Pain spread through his entire body, but he refused to slow down. The sooner he crossed into the lands of the Imperial Court Empire, the less mana the void would steal from the forests belonging to Voidstar.
Why struggle so desperately to protect them? The voice asked. You could take everything you need from here.
"Because these lands belong to me," Max replied.
The voice released a quiet laugh inside his mind, but Max ignored it as his wings continued carrying him forward. He had already given the darkness far more control than he intended, and agreeing with its desire to destroy his enemies did not mean he would allow it to decide what happened to his own people.
Each time the void heart attempted to increase the amount of mana entering his body, Max pushed himself faster, leaving the affected land behind before the hunger could strip it completely. The effort caused pain to spread from his temples toward the back of his skull, while the darkness continued spreading through the whites of his eyes until only thin traces of white remained around his black pupils.
He could feel the voice becoming more excited as the distance between him and the Imperial Court Empire shortened.
Stop resisting me, Max. You need mana, and I need to feed. For once, we both desire the same thing.
"We desire different things," Max answered. "Our path only happens to lead toward the same enemy."
The voice did not respond, but its amusement remained within the darkness surrounding his heart.
When the lands controlled by the Imperial Court Empire finally appeared in the distance, Max felt the difference immediately. Mana filled the forests, moved beneath the soil, and gathered around everything capable of using magic, holding far more than the weakened Spirit Realm had been able to offer during the final hours of his attempt.
Max crossed into the empire without slowing down.
The void heart released a beat powerful enough to shake his entire body, and the mana surrounding him immediately began flowing toward his mana container before being sent into the darkness. Trees bent beneath him as their leaves trembled, while the multicolored mana hidden throughout the land rose into the sky and followed Max like an endless river.
This time, he did not attempt to escape from it.
Max allowed the void heart to consume everything it could reach. The moment the mana was purified, he tore it back out and gathered it beside the void heart, shaping it himself before it could be swallowed again.
A faint multicolored outline began forming within his chest.
The voice laughed louder as the hunger spread farther across the Imperial Court Empire, but Max no longer cared whether it enjoyed what was happening.
Max raised his darkened eyes toward the lands stretching ahead as more mana gathered around his body.
"Let’s see how much of your empire I need to consume before my second heart begins beating."
Warning drums thundered and trumpets blared in every direction as smoke rose from the distant mountains, and when Max saw the terrified expressions on the faces of the guards who had noticed him, he understood that the entire empire would soon come to kill him, turning the creation of his Mana Heart into a race against time.
