’If I hear one more thought that doesn’t belong to me, I swear that I’ll start charging you all rent!’ Lith said. ’Get out of my head, and I mean literally. Solus, you can stay. Just focus on recon, please.’
’Way ahead of you.’ Solus used the Eyes and Ears of Menadion to perform a full scan of the Carkas Estate.
She examined the various permanent arrays, studied their effects, and searched for any weak point the Demons could exploit.
’The good news is that this place is nothing much. It’s worse than the Frorl Estate, but much better than the Blood Axes’ underground fortress.’ Solus said. ’The bad news is that this is the ancestral house of a noble bloodline loyal to the Crown.
’You can’t break in as Tarak from Cerea. You must follow protocol, or the origin of any evidence we collect will be rightfully questioned. A smart lawyer would claim that, without a proper chain of custody, there is no way to know if Carkas is truly guilty of treason or if you’re just framing him to save Keyla.’
’Thanks, Solus.’ Lith nodded. ’I got so used to barging inside my enemies’ lairs that I forgot warrants are a thing. And that even though I’ve already asked Kami for one.’
Kamila had requested the search and arrest warrants from her superior, and Jirni had signed them instantly based on the evidence at hand. Then Kamila had forwarded the paperwork to Lith, putting him on the right side of the law.
"This is Supreme Magus Verhen!" Lith said, his voice magically amplified.
’Say that again. This time with your face and while wearing your Magus robe, though.’ Solus pointed out. ’Also, maybe project a Manohar’s ego-sized hologram of yourself. Otherwise, everyone will take you for a madman.’
’Good point.’ Lith shapeshifted into his Mogarian appearance and had his adventurer clothes turn into his golden and white Magus uniform.
"I’m here on His Majesty’s service to arrest Baron Elmun Carkas for multiple charges of accessory to murder, aggravated robbery, fencing, and conspiracy against his fellow nobles and the people of the Ghishal County.
"You have three seconds to depower the arrays of the Carkas Mansion and drop your weapons. If you don’t comply, everyone inside the magical formations will also be considered an accessory to all the charges and treated accordingly to the law. One!"
Lith assumed his full Tiamat form, blotting out the sun with his wings and plunging the noble household into an unnatural darkness.
"Two!" Double Edge appeared in his hands, and he and the Sigil Demons began to weave their respective Blade Spells.
Varegrave and the other Demons sealed the magic runes inside themselves so no one would notice, while Lith conjured strings of colossal runes with each swing of his blade.
He released so much mana that the defensive magical formations became visible to the naked eye just to resist the pressure exerted by the nascent Blade Spells.
"Three!" The array field went down, but Lith ordered his Demons to hold their position, ready to unleash their Blade Spells the moment the magical formations were reactivated, or someone tried to sneak in or out of the mansion.
Lith shrunk to his human size and bolted past the external gate and through the park, landing right before the main entrance.
"Open up!" He said, and the double doors swung open while his voice was still echoing.
"Please, have mercy." The butler was a middle-aged man with red hair, a moustache, and a livery. "My family lives in here. We haven’t done anything wrong. We are law-abiding citizens of the Kingdom. I swear."
"Then get out of here and wait in the park." Lith replied, keeping only his seven eyes and pristine wings out as his badge of office. "Do not try to leave the estate, though. My Demons have instructions to kill first and ask questions later."
The butler and the rest of the house staff standing beyond the threshold swallowed hard. They cleared the path for Lith and ran to pick up the members of their respective families and bring them to safety.
Lith didn’t need a guide to reach the Baron’s chambers. Jirni’s warrant came with a detailed blueprint of the mansion with the living quarters of its master marked in bright red.
Lith flew onto the balcony of Carkas’ office and opened the glass door from the inside with a thread of Spirit Magic.
"Baron Elmun Carkas, you’re under arrest." Lith said, staring the terrified noble in the eyes.
The Baron was a man in his fifties, with grizzled black hair and ice-blue eyes. Between his tall, lean build and the monocle he wore, Carkas reminded Lith of Trequill Lark enough to make him grit his teeth in annoyance.
"You have the right to remain silent and still. Make one wrong move, and the next conversation I’ll have will be with the coroner. Do you understand your rights as I have explained them to you?"
"Yes." The baron found himself drenched in a cold sweat when he met Lith’s cruel gaze.
Carkas was sure to have never crossed paths with Lith, but he could feel the hatred radiating from the Magus’ figure.
"Then, turn around and let me cuff you." Spirit Magic forced Baron Carkas to his knees and hogtied him like a prime roast without waiting for his compliance. "I’m not going to leave until I’m certain I’ve found-"
’A Warp Steps is about to form on the caron’s right!’ Solus warned him.
’Shit!’ Lith had no idea of who or what might come out of the dimensional corridor.
Maybe Carkas’ mysterious ally had decided to step out of the shadows to save him, or maybe it was just an assassin sent to dispose of the baron now that he had become a loose end.
’A Warp Steps means that either someone is crossing a long distance to come here, or that they want to cast a spell from wherever they are and confirm the kill. I can’t wait to find out which!’ Lith used the same tendrils of Spirit Magic that he had conjured to restrain Baron Carkas to pull him away.
At the same time, Lith erected several mystical barriers to protect himself and his prisoner as he charged forward. The attacker had the advantage of surprise, and Lith needed to get his hands on Carkas before whatever was about to emerge from the Warp Steps.
With the Baron dead or gone, proving the conspiracy in Ghishal would be impossible, and Keyla was likely to lose her title of countess.
’If Carkas has even half a brain, he keeps all the incriminating evidence on himself.’ Lith thought as he pushed the baron behind him and unfolded his wings to shield him from both spells and sight. ’Searching this place won’t do us any good.
’I bet that even if Jirni turns the entire estate upside down, she’s going to find only breadcrumbs.’
A strong open hand came out from the Warp Steps, and it was aimed exactly where Carkas had been and would still be if not for the Ears of Menadion and Solus’ warning.
It moved too fast to belong to a non-Awakened, and it was not a speed a magicless human like the baron could survive. The hand swatted the spot where Carkas had stood until a heartbeat ago, hitting the floor with enough strength to make it collapse.
